My Name is Adam, I'm 43 years old, lives in the rainy Brussels, Belgium and I have been divorced for 2 years now and have two boys who live with their mother (no acrimony between my former wife and I)
Please excuse my mistakes in English; I don't have much practice .
I have followed your interesting forum for a few weeks now but never chatted with you because my story is somewhat different.
After three years without hollidays, I decided in january to visit Saint Petersbourg during the white nights (I wanted to go last year for the 300th anniversary but it was unpossible)
I decided to travel alone because I didn't want to join an organized group (I hate the carpets selling sessions you have to assist with those groups).
But, I have some experience with Internet and I tried to find russian people who would accept to meet me for the fun or converstaion in St P.
I found a lot of travel agencies sites and of course 2.000 dating agencies sites but never a sort of international meeting forum.
After a while, I let my profile on the most detailed dating site but expressly said that I searched a penpal to talk about St P. (Dr Freud would not believe me ,I think ). First answer frow a Ukrainian girl : "Why don't you come to Kiev ?" Because I want to go to St P my dear ! I never received another mail from her.
Then, a few days later, I was contacted by a ST P woman , also a Natasha (but from St P, dear TimH , from St P !). Her English was even worse than mine but her mother is an English teacher in St P and helped a lot . She wanted to meet an western European man/woman to learn about our way of life and especially to train her english because she couldn't bear her mother endless reprimands (That means that Russian and Belgian mothers are very quite alike ... :))))
So, we chatted about many things during two months and, suddenly, I realized that I needed her daily mails just as she told me that she needed mines .
Well, we talked about more private affairs from this moment.
Since then, (and to be short)
- I accelerated my study of the russian language (I always study the language of the country I visit but now, my motivation is VERY different)
- I call her 2-3 times a week; my Russian is still very limited and we often speak through her mother but we can understand each other; She began to learn french (my native language)
-She is 35 and divorced too; not an innocent young maiden anymore
- In St P, you cannot host a russian woman in your hotel room; she has to leave at 11 pm at most. So I reserved an hotel (Sovetskaya) for one night to get the invitation and the inscription but at the same time, I booked a private apartment ....
- We never talked about money even if it's clear that I will have to finance her coming to Belgium if she doesn't fly away screaming when she will see me :))
- We talked (after much time and with "innocent" words) about sex.
- I told her that my first financial priority is the future of my children and she understands this. I told her that she won't have to worry about money if I die before her but my real estates (= my house) will go to my boys.
- On the other side, she told me that the inhabitants of St P are much more westerner than in the other russian regions. So don't think that my story can be replicated.
- I will depart for St P next week Tuesday. Unfortunately, this was suppose to be a tourist trip; not a love encounter and I'm obliged to come back on Sunday. Bloody hell !
I'd like to thank all the people who gave interesting informations; especially about customs and the needed pens ! I didn't thought about this !
I have only one remark about russian women vs westerners : IF they are all like my Natasha, they are far more sensible and romantic than ours. Be gentle, be aware of their mood, don't forget the important dates and they will be thankful, very, very thankful !!! I had no big dispute with my former wife but it's very refreshing to be thanked when you try to be a loving man !
By the way, did I told you that I love her ? ... (NATASHA of course !!!!)
Hello Adam, intersting story. If you could when you come back could you leave your thoughts about the city? I am going very soon after you and its nice to get some opinions of the experience. Good luck!!
Adam,
You didn't need to reassure me that your Natasha is in St P mate :o)
I trust my lady, considering I was the only guy she ever wrote to from the first time I wrote her, I have no insecurities about her.
Just a small word of caution, be careful with the "booking into a hotel, and then going to an apartment" thing mate !! I have posted a few warnings about this because to the FSU authorities it is a Very serious issue !!!
Its technically illegal to do this in the FSU, because you will be registered as staying at the hotel when in fact No-one in the authorities will know where you are !! They don't like it much when tourists are unaccounted for !!
Some simple tips to keep you safe while being such a naughty boy ;o))
DO NOT answer the door if anyone knocks, let your girl do it and You stay out of sight and don't speak while she is at the door. I say this because the police are known to wander about knocking on doors looking for people who are living in apartments they are not registered at (this is also done to nationals of the country too, so don't think its just you they are after, the rules of registration apply to citizens too !!) Also, do not make even polite conversation with anyone you might meet on the stairs of the apartment block, (if you can avoid them do so) also outside the front door, or within about 1/2 a mile of your pad, just politely nod if anyone greets you, but DO NOT speak.
There is a good chance if they realise that you are a foreigner the next thing you will get is a visit from the local police officer who will have been tipped off by the local resident that there is a foreigner staying in their block !! It happens, be wary of it !!
Be certain not to leave large amounts of cash, or valuables in the apartment, besides burglary being quite rife there, you never know who else may have a key to the front door !! Again, caution can save much heartache :o))
Third but just as important, if the apartment has a phone and it rings DO NOT answer it !! Get your girl to answer, for the same reasons you must not answer the door !!
One last point, when it comes to getting a visa for your wife/ fiance the authorities will want to see receipts from hotels which add proof to the fact you have been to see her several times and stayed for X amount of nights in her city, if you don't stay in hotels you wont get receipts, and the people who rent flats illegally to foreigners DO NOT hand out invoices or receipts, so bear that in mind :o))
If in future you want to stay in a flat, then get a "private invitation" from your girl, then within 3 days of arrival register yourself at the local OVIR (your lady will know where it is because she will get your invitation from there) They will register that you are staying in the apartment you have rented, that way you will have proof later when you need it that you have been there a few times, and stayed a while each time too :o))
Above all, and most important of all, Have a Damn good time ;o))
And the short visit you are making is perfect !! If all is good then you will be both be gagging for your return visit, and if (hopefully not) it doesn't go as well as we would all like, then you wont be there for days on end on your own ;o)
Sure Crash, no problem mate, but be aware that my email is stuffed right now !! I can receive but I cant answer at the moment ! Bloody annoying I can tell you !!!
Perfectly understood; I will make my stay at the hotel corroborate with the location of the apartment. But, by Jove, I thought that the old CCCP days were gone forever! I will have to watch to my old 007 movies again ! :)))
More seriously, I will leave my cash in the hotel safe and be a very discreet neighbour in the apartment; even if it will be sometimes difficult :))))))
Oh, one thing for EU travellers : buy USD to go to Russia; they take the Euro for the same value as the USD (1 USD = 1 EUR) but , for now, the USD is 15% cheaper !
Actually, I perhaps booked the apartment for nothing : I called my "step mother" (Nat was working but I like her mother very much) yesterday evening and she also invited me to stay with Nat at their apartment while she will be sleeping in her other daughter's apartment. (sorry guys, this one is yet married and happy)
I have travelled all over the EU for years now and I still can't believe that we cannot organize civilized journeys between Russia and the West; the administrative costs (visa, passport, travel insurance and so on) have cost me more than the plane.
I don't really care because I urgently want to see my Nat' at all costs but I feel like a time traveller !
I also took care of keeping my phone bills (thanks mate !); my e-mails , written letters and bills for flowers. I don't think that the belgian embassy will have much arguments to refuse her the wife visa but you never can bet !
Thanks again Tim my young fellow, I wish you that your wish upon a star will become true.
And the same to all the daring men of this forum.
VIVEZ HEUREUX !
P.S. If i'm not jailed in the lubianka, i will report to you on may 31 at most !
The FSU is still very much like the CCCP regards old rules and ways of doing things, registration is one rule that so far I have heard no plans to have recinded.
Although we have little real trouble going there, compared to trying to get a Russian lady to our countries !!! Thats a real no brainer if you havnt been there a few times and can prove it, so keep Everything, even restaurant bills when you take her out !! It all goes to prove an "established relationship" the only thing the Embassies care about !!
Have a good and safe trip Adam, we shall all be awaiting your news when you return :o))
Indeed, I read your post and was very glad to have made a good choice ! :)
But they are very firm with the "no russian girl after 11 pm" rule ! That's why I also rented an apartment !
I'm just back from St P. (My) Natasha is a wonderful woman and everything was just perfect between us. I'll make her come to Belgium as a tourist in september and, if she thinks that she can accept this new environnement, we'll launch "Operation Marriage".
About my trip (especially for Crash but others are maybe interested)
Arrival in St P-Lubokovo II; I had filled the immigration and customs forms bit nobody seemed interested by the customs form. I walked through the green zone (nothing to declare) without any remark.
Nat was at the airport and had ordered an official taxi. 20$ to the centre of St P. Something odd : the taxi company called her just before the arrival of our taxi to describe the vehicle, the plate number and so on. It seems that the official companies are pirated !
Fisrt impression of St P : Unbreathable !!!! I don't know what they put in the tank of their cars but the level of pollution in the centre is amazing ! It's rather sustainable in the parks, the No-car streets and so on but the difference with west-european cities is huge ! Only Istambul has a level of pollution similar !
About cars, be careful : the cars don't stop for pedestrians; traffic lights or not. Only another car or a Militiania can stop them.
By the way, I have seen Militiania "stopping" people (not only car drivers; young people too; or hoboes); they are VERY efficient. I'm bigger than most of the russian people I've seen in St P but the Militiania must come from another part of the country ..... I wouldn't even dream about resisting the smallest of them !
To See : Pierre's Fortress with St Peter and St Paul Church; the Hermitage Museum of course but most of all, the "Treasury" collection (300 RU with english speaking guide : unique pieces of the Russian history; mostly jewels or gold)- the collections of western grands maîtres are less interresting if you know the collections in Le Louvres or from the Bristish; even our tiny Brussels Museum is even rich.
Less rich than the treasury of the Hermitage but as interesting : the Russki Museum : also original russian art; possibility to accomplish the visit with a audio transmitter for the comments.
A boat trip on the Neva is highly recommended, especially if you are not alone :)
A little remark : there are two prices for most of the museums/monuments : Russian Federation Citizen and Rest Of The World.
R.O.T.W. pays +/- 6x more than the RF citizen. I'm not pêrsonnaly shocked by this situation; Nat was a little annoyed but she never tried to conceal my appartenance to the ROTW. Discipline (or patriotism) above love ? :)
To eat : Nat has always token me to "CAFES" (I don't have cyrillic caracters on this PC but you must imagine a "phi" instead of the "F")
I have ALWAYS very good eaten and for CHEAP prices (2 EUR and i'm a good fork !). Nat said that "Restarans" are much more expensive and not so good. We never tried so I cannot corroborate.
For a first try, I should recommand cafe "Na Abordach" (Boarding Attack ?) on the Reki Moïni : an embankment not so far from the hermitage and the Russki Museum. Big advantage : all the descripions of the dishes are translated ! I took a huge amount of notes there and it helped me in the other cafes !
Another thing : in the cafes , you will find three sorts of "salat" : with sour cream, with mayonnaise and with oil. If you are not accustomed to mediteranean food, avoid the oil "salats"; they like to put a lot of oil everywhere and, even for me, it's sometimes a little too much. I don't think that an anglo-saxon palate can support such a preparation. But they also have toastes (salmon, caviar black/red f.i.)
and warm dishes; a variety of soups included)
Hotel : as I said, I booked in parallel the Sovetskaya and an apartment : I didn't had any problem (pure luck ?) even if I stayed in the Hotel 10 min to check in and 2 minutes to get my passport back and that's all.
The same for my (sad) return : After the 2 security controls, the 3 passport controls and the check in for my ticket, I just walked with other tourists through the green zone without incident !
I don't know any other city in the FSU but perhaps that St P is different : more liberalisme or "je m'en foutisme" than in other cities ?
One of the passeport controls was extraordinnary : a sort of female Staline (yes, she had the same moustache) has scanned me during sixty seconds (I had registred the time of my predecessors in the queue) to check if I was well the same guy as on my passport. I nearly laughed but I don't think it had been a good idea ...)
Beer : you find the most classic western brands but, among the locals, I preferred the "Nievska Classica". In my opinion, much superior to those strange liquids "brewed" in the US. You find them in the cafes but also in the tiny shops where they sell drinks and cigarettes.
Vodka : but what have I done on thursday evening ???? I was drinking something with Nat and wake up 12 hours later without any rememberance of anything. My advantage : few or no hangover (but I will never drink whisky anymore).
That's all for the moment : I hev not yet eaten and nat's Mother gave me piroshki for tonight.
"I don't know what they put in the tank of their cars"
Very poor quality petrol Adam, I certainly would Not want a tank full of it in my car !!
Also many cars are ill maintained and their emissions are way over the recommended fuel to air mixture that the car makers designed them for !! They don't change things like air filters and plugs and oil regularly and thats the fastest way to make an engine run off tune and produce much more pollution.
It makes me laugh to think about the things the UK government heap on us car drivers with legislation and Bullshit !! Yet countries like the FSU and USA continue to produce more and more pollution every year and do sod all about it !! ;o))
"Vodka : but what have I done on Thursday evening ???? I was drinking something with Nat and wake up 12 hours later without any remembrance of anything. My advantage : few or no hangover (but I will never drink whisky anymore)."
Excellent :o)) Another True Convert to the cause :o)))
"Vodka Rocks !!" Thats not a request, thats a statement !! :o))
And Russian Vodka makes Smirnoff, which is one of the top western brands, and thats supposed to be good Vodka, taste like rocket starter fuel !!! Russian Vodka is smooth and not at all unpleasant to drink straight, Smirnoff makes ones eyes water its so crap !!!
Glad it all went well Adam, and glad to have you back safe, sound and happy :o))
Tim, actually the cities here in the US have much less pollution than they did. Pollution has been declining since the 70s................. On a similar note, I heard recently that we in the US should be expecting some bad feelings between America and Russia over oil, in the next year or so. Something to do with Russia not going to have a market for their oil after US gets its deal with Iraq. Russian economy takes a dive and US will be seen as the cause. It will probebly work for and against Americans looking for a Russian bride.
I really did appreciate True Russian Vodka. It's indeed very smooth and I tried a variety of brands. It didn't remembered me of anything I drank in the West (even Absolut). And, as I said, after my 12 hours coma, I didn't have a headache ! I will remain careful but I brought back 1 liter of Flagman and I'm not sure I will deal this with my pals.
"the UK government heap on us car drivers with legislation and Bullshit !! "
In St P, I was ready to vote for the Greens for the first time in my life ! You are certainly right about motors being out of tune : every motor I heard seemed to have serve in his first life on a tractor or a tugboat !
The thing of bad pollution situation is that many many people fix their cars on their own, very few go to autoservice...and when my dad once went there they forgot to do some small detail and that almost caused a crash...for foreign cars details cost a huge sum of money, I'm not sure about St P, but I speak about here, and many people put spare details from Moskvitch or other cars like that.
As on of my friends said St P is a city of people who use drugs...I know that there are people who don't use them, but he said that on holidays he saw that many people used drugs before going out on the street....I know to give the city such a name is like to call Lugansk the city of scammers, it's not that all people use drugs but many do...
