Well, I am thinking of which way I want to go with this.. Should I go the lawyer route and spend another 2 grand and not have any hassles? Or is it possible to do one of these do it yourself kits for 65 bucks? Is it actually possible to go it alone without screwing it all up? I just don't want to mess this all up for me and my lady if we both decide this is what we want when we are together in a few weeks, this is wayyyy to important. I want to be prepared. Anybody with real experience in this area?
Crash:
Doing it yourself takes No longer than having the lawyer do it for you, they cant give any gaurantees that they will be successful, so if they do, dont go near them with a 20 foot pole, and why waste $2K paying a leech to suck you dry when you can do it all yourself for $65 !!
Its a bit of a no brainer really mate !! :o)
As you know I married then brought mine home, from the day we decided to marry it took 3 months until she had her visa to come here, but we didnt get married intil 2 days before the end of the 3 months.
The rules for the UK differe slightly, but there is no less ppaerwork to do, so there is no point asking someone else to waste your money for you :o)
The rules on the surface may differ slightly, but be assured that in the US the word is that if you do not have a lawyer or some inmigration expert representing you to process your K1 -K3 visa, the lower level bureacrats who go through your paperwork in the newly renamed and somewhat justified paranoid US Department of Homeland Security inmediately label you 'unworthy' or 'suspicious'...
If the two grand does not break the piggy bank I say it's money well spent.
I'd spend my time getting a reliable lawyer firm with a well proven track record you can verify before you put any money down, though...
Tip: some basic agencies who specialize on passport photos and seemingly menial documents have offices near the USCIS offices also help with the ki k3 visas, cost less and most importantly, get in touch with the actual people who process the visa paperwork on a daily basis...
"inmediately label you 'unworthy' or 'suspicious'..."
Well they got that totally arse about face !!!
"If the two grand does not break the piggy bank I say it's money well spent."
Any money given to a lawyer is money wasted as far as Im concerned, they are blood suckers which the world could well do without !!
"I'd spend my time getting a reliable lawyer firm with a well proven track record you can verify before you put any money down, though..."
Exactly !!! They are supposed to be Lawyers, honest, above board, with high integrity, but the first thing one has to do is waste their own time checking out a group of people that shouldnt need to be checked out !!! Is it any wonder I wouldnt trust one as far as I could spit a fridge !!
Not all lawyers are 'divorce lawyers', mate...
Your blanket statement of the entire profession is not accurate.
In the US, hiring a lawyer or expert agency to assist you with the government bureacracy is one of the best moves you could ever make.
When you're faced with a process completely unfamiliar like a fiance visa, your entire relationship can be in peril if you get rejected or delayed simply because you didn't want to spend the money to hire an expert to help you and your lady.
"...Sorry, honey....you'll have to stay in your FSU country 6-12 more months because I did not fill the forms properly or filed them at the wrong place/time and I was too much of a tight wad to delegate this major priority to someone else..."
NO, TimH.....you know already how conservative I am about money and managing the multiple ways to spend it.
But this is not one area where I'd hesitate one second in hiring someone else with know-how and experience to do it for me.
Some men do not have a choice because money is short.
That is understandable....but doing out of spite against lawyers or to save a buck is flat out negligent.
Toad- If you're so tight with your money, why spend $2000 when many marriage agencies will do it for $600. That's what the agency I'm dealing with charges and they claim to never have a problem. I'm not too much into giving any lawyers a dime of my money as I have been robbed by them one to many times.
Well, I'm a little confused. Tim, GL, you both have valid points on both sides. I really don't want to get a lawyer involved, but there are alot of "what if's" involved.
I'm thinking about getting this K-1 visa kit. Even if I decide to get a lawyer, maybe its good to get just to see whats involved. Go check it out and tell me your thoughts guys, would you get it??
I agree Crash, get the kit, do some homework, ask some questions of the official offices (Don`t ask a lawyer, they will of course advise you that you need them !!) and just see how hard it is going to be, before you pay a lawyer to take you out of the loop. Because once you have taken them onboard you are working to feed 3 and they wont tell you at every step what they are doing, or what your options are, and if anyone in the loop needs chasing, you have to rely on them to do it, whereas if you are handling it yourself, you can get on the phone and explode all over whoever is fecking you around :o)
It may not speed them up much, but it feels Damn good :o))
I bought the kit you are looking at. I read through it and it sure gave me a good idea of what is required. My girl and I spent some time filling out the forms last month when we were together. I assume you have also checked out uscis.gov, our wonderful governments web site!
My girl and I have decided to go another route....get married over there and apply for the K-3 visa. Of course this approach his it's risks too. You don't get the 90 day return policy on the girl!! She has a friend that got married there and it was very simple, and the people at the US embassy were very helpful.
I would be interested in any comments about this approach.
"You don't get the 90 day return policy on the girl!!"
Not even if you pay with your Visa card ? Well that sucks :o))) But I guess if you pay visa you are insured for 90 days incase she gets stolen :o)
Neon: You are aware that the K3 for teh US can take as long as 12 months to process ?
My Ukrianina sister was married last September, she "might" get to the US by August, if nothing else causes any delays !!
Actually, I think those 90 days will be critical for us to adjust to eachother and more importantly, for her to see if she can adjust to all the changes she is going to face. I really want to use that time so she can be sure she can spend the rest of her life here and that she will be happy living so far away from her homeland.
Neon, I have heard about the same things Tim just stated. I read that with the K-1 visa she can come to you in as little as 6 months. Maybe even sooner than that if your lucky. I would try to look into that further.
LMAO..!!!
A morbid thought came to mind.....(unusual for me, uh?)
I just try to put myself in the head any western woman who tries to understand or wonders why any grown educated western man would ever spend any time, energy or money looking for women in eastern europe when there are so many loving, smart independent, achieved women in the west, lol....if I had a dollar for every time I tried to explain it to each western woman I dated, I'd have enough money to pay for everyone's fiance visa, lol...:)
I know getting the K1-K3 visa is a hard, tedious, process snail pacing process and it can get expensive as well......BUT worthy regardless of the route anyone chooses to follow to obtain it.
Stick to it...:))))
The folks at the US embassy in Moscow say that if you will call them they can tell you what you need to do to make the process easier and much quicker. I know of one case a few months ago where the couple got married in Moscow and it was just a matter of weeks before she had her K-3
That is great news!!!
It surely contradicts what I've heard about the US embassy in Kiev, where it's been rumored that several US employees (US females, I bet) have been reprimended for conspiring to obstruct the process of K1-visas for dozens of US citizens.
Even if you have the 'verbal' assurances of an embassy employee, I still prefer to hire an agency or lawyer to do it for me....
The mere thought of standing patiently in line for the privilige to face yet another overpaid and underachieved government employee with napoleonic power complex to scrutinize my private life does not really turn me on....I rather spend the time picking up dog poop, lol.
Wow weeks? Unfortunatly I don't have that kind of luck. I'm sure I will encounter every pitfall and barrier that there is to get my sweetheart here with me. You should have seen what I had to go through just to get my passport and visa. I am amazed I got everything in time.
"that she will be happy living so far away from her homeland."
I miss read that the first time !! I though you said
"that she will be happy living so far away from her husband." !! LOL
I know of a guy in Cali who got his gril there in 4 months on a K1, she only stayed one week as he was an asshole (have mentioned this episode elsewhere a while ago) but 4 months is no time at all to wait, a year for a spouse visa is a damn long time !!
It has never ceased to amuse me that the Powers that Be, want you to prove its a real and honest marraige and committed, yet they want you to do that while living 1000`s of miles apart ! If its to be "real, honest and committed" you need to be in the same place to work at it !! Duhhhh !!
Neon:
I married my Russian X in Uzbekistan and hasd her spouse visa 2 days, Yes 2 Days later !! We were back in England 7 days after that, but of course thats the UK, and also the fact I let it be known that if they gave me any shit or delayed its issue in any way they were going to have me exploding all over the embassy :o)
They realised I wasnt to be messed with :o)
GL
"(US females, I bet) have been reprimended for conspiring to obstruct the process of K1-visas for dozens of US citizens."
Nope, that will be Ukraine employees mate, they are the same in Uzbekistan, the local workers are quite nasty I have found, so cut through their crap and go to the top :o)
"Even if you have the 'verbal' assurances of an embassy employee"
Verbal, not worth the paper its written on !!
When dealing with the Uzbek staff at the UK embassy in Tashkent I need some info, I asked the questions and was told "I think so" my reaction, "I think so isnt good enough, put me through to the Consul immediately" She did, and as a result all the staff involed in trying to feck me around got roasted !! They were VERY helpful after that !!
Stiil on for the end of June crash ?
Im going to Natsah on the 25th mate, so looks like we might bump into each other at the airport :o))
Or in the skies over Russia if you are using local planes !! ;o))
I could live with 4 months. All I know is when I come back, if everything goes as me and my lady think they will, I am going to want her here ASAP. I'm bringing paperwork for her with me. I'm not wasting any time. I really don't know if I can get away to see her again anytime soon. I am really putting my company in a bit of a bind by leaving for 8 days as it is. After our meeting I want her here and then she can see if she wants to stay in those 90 days we have. We can always plan to go back to Russia together sometime in the future.
But you know what....nothing I ever plan goes AS planned =/
