I am wondering if it is really worth while learning Russian. This might sound like a dumb question to some but I have my reasons. English is my native tongue and I live in South Florida. Here Spanish is a second language and although it is not obligatory to speakee Spannee here it sure does help. In fact in Miami now it is dificult to obtain work without it. I learned in Guatemala, I lived there for a couple of months and had a private teacher for 5 weeks, 8 hours a a day. I then took 3 college courses in Spanish and the mere fact you live here guarantees you will get a work out regularly.
I also have a smattering of French, quite enough to get myself into trouble. Not always to get out!
Thing is I think I am tapped out. I have enough trouble with Spanish, I am not fluent by any stretch of the imagination although you would think I would be after 19 years. I even married a Cuban wife and that definitely did not help.
When I first looked at this possibilty of Marriage I was naturally drawn to the AFA Cartegena tours. She could communicate with me fairly well and plug right into the community right away. You definitely do not need to speak English to live here. My soon to be ex in-laws have been here since 1974 and still don't hardly any. They haven't had enough time I suppose.
I dismissed this idea quite quickly and I will tell you why. Latin American women are quick learners and I don't mean language. They are fairly sophisticated and can extremely quickly turn into wannabe princesses. Everyone knows about JAPs right? Jewish American Princesses. Here we have JAPs and CAPs. Cuban/Colombian American Princesses. If you look through the requirements for these girls in the usual spots you will see that they are more picky than the FSU ladies. I love latin women and Latin America but experience has taught me that they can fast become a pain in the ass. Especially Cubans. Latins are also REALLY loud and often, once they are Americanized demanding and coarse.
The ladies in the FSU seeem to be cut from a completely different bolt of cloth. I have never been there and I only have known 2 at work but they seem more restrained and lady like. I like that.
So I have decided that I will stop dating women here completely and concentrate on this new project. Therefore we come back to language.
Point is that I don’t think I have it in me to learn another language again. I am too old and too ugly. Plus I know damn well that the ONLY way to learn a language is to live in the country for a while. This is an absolute fact. If you have ever tried to learn Chinese you will know what I mean!!! Learning from the computer CD or a tape/book will only get you a fraction of the way down that road. However, 5 minutes in a market place and you will be so curious with questions that the whole thing starts to turn into a giant crossword puzzle. That is the best way to learn with tons of practice and a certain amount of desperation. You know, “I really need a bathroom and NOW” – it can be amazing how fast you learn.
Being as the lady will have to come to the USA eventually anyway it seems logical that the onus should fall on her. I am not trying to be selfish it is just that there isn’t much call for Russian in Fort Lauderdale and I am definitely not planning on moving there.
I would really like to hear everyone’s thoughts on this. I am willing to change my thinking in a heartbeat if someone will give me a good reason.

I am learning Russian for a couple of reasons. First it is unbelievable how happy it makes Tanya. When I went to visit her everyone we met she proudly informed them that I was learning her language. Second, when we go to visit her family from time to time it would be nice to speak directly to someone instead of using a third party. I am using Rosetta Stone for a language course. Once Tanya arrives in the US then in the evenings we can speak Russian at home. That should help my ability. If nothing else it will supply Tanya some amusing times while I try to get my American tongue around a Russian “R”.
Just some thoughts on the subject.
This is a very good point, and being the way that I am, if I ever get it together to go I will definitely master a few words. However I am talking about going at this in depth. You obviously have a plan but I'm still thinking that other than courtesy this is a hell of a lot of trouble for nothing. It isn't like you can use it here in the States much, unless you live in our around Brighton, NY.
I really appreciate your input but I would really like to hear some more ideas.
Regards
Steve
Hello Steve, you should really try to learn the language of your girlfriend. It shows that you are really interested in her culture and you dont have to be fluent. I don't know if your lady is Ukrainian or Russian, but learn it. Just the basics at first. It will get you a long way with folks. I speak in addition to English, Greek, Macedonian, Spanish ( I live in So. Cal, I mean Northern Baja Republic of So. Cal) LOL. I am learning Ukrainian now as my girl is learning English and Greek also. Language is the key to anywhere in the world, only if it is a few basic expressions. I can say the basic greetings in over 27 languages. The people really appreciate it and it shows respect I think for their culture. You will enjoy learning also, especially sometimes when you put the accent wrong and you say something different, and don't worry they wont shoot you, just laugh and correct you. It is very nice.
Take care my friend and good luck. I hope this helped you.
I agree with Bill and Michael also. The woman I am writing to teaches English in college so really no need to learn Russian but the fact that I'm trying greatly impresses her. If for some reason our relationship collapses, I will need more than ever. If things workout like I hope, I would still have her parents and siblings to deal with. It is more important than what you think. At least in woman's view.
Izi you would not believe where you can find a Russian contingent. To learn to speak their language. I was surprised when I first started learning of the many places I could find Native
speakers in my area. I've also enrolled at the University of Louisville to take their Russian language course. Not only learning the language for your lady, but having a grasp of the
language opens doors for employment that you may not realize. One
of the tutors At UfoL works at the hospital as an interpreter for
Russian speakers. She's a fourth year Russian student. I know my attempt to learn my ladys language has impressed here. I did it out of respect for her. I told her though the real reason I did it is because if she gets pissed at me she'll probably say it in her
native tongue, a natural impulse. So I want to know what she's saying so I know whether to duck or smile!!!
I remember my days (make that YEARS) at U of L so well! A fine school, but all my time was spent down on Preston street at the Med-Dent school! Sure do miss the best tailgate parties in college football. I was hoping to make it to the game down here against Miami Thursday night, but its a hour and a half drive each way for me so not looking so good. Any way great idea taking the course. Hope it is pass/fail!
Good luck.
Thanks everyone. You have convinced me. I will take a crack at it.
I shall feel guilty though because there will always be a little nagging voice saying I should be concentrating on my Spanish but what the heck!
Go Miami, Dolphins yahh (like I really care :)
There is one more thing I would like to say.
I am really impressed with this forum. You guys have real heart. It is such a pleasure to hear guys talking like real men not stupid typical American stereotypes. There is hope for us all I think. Wish there were more people around like you guys. Sharing these ups and downs and having a grin at the same time is making a difference to my life. What with the divorce and all I glad I found you all.
Upwards and onwards as they say. Now dinner, my work here is done.
Steve
p.s. I just found bad mozzerella cheese in the fridge who the hell knew mozzarella cheese bloody well goes off !!
Louisville is a great town, I've worked there for the last four
years. I used to commute from Madison Indiana everyday. What really
knocked me out was not just does UofL have great tailgate parties, but did you ever go to the Trinity, St. X high school football games? When I first moved down here a coworker told me that 35,000
people or more would show up for that game. I said bullshit, when I went with Jay I couldn't believe it, that night attendence for
the high school game was over 38,000. Serious Catholic Football.
I go to a few Cards games, being an IU fan we don't know what football is all about. We used to have a clue what basketball was
about, but I joined the Texas-Tech bandwagon even though I am an
IU Alum.
Izz, just be serious about what you do. We have a lot of fun here and there are many guys here very experienced. I am not one of them but with their help the last six months it is making my
preparation of visiting my lady in Kiev in November rather easy.
I have followed up on some of their reccomendations and used some
of my own. The only thing I have left to do now is get on the plane and I thank a lot of these guys here for all their information. Even though we all have the tendency to overdose on
our dumbass pills once in a while, I think everyone's goal here is for each of us to have a successful search for our soulmate.
Mike
Trying my best to be serious. Today I went and had some professional photos taken and ordered a Russian language course on DVDs and CDs from Ebay. Wish me luck and I wish you all the best on your trip to Kiev.
Steve
I used some courses on CD they are a great help, still hearing the
language spoken is the best way to learn. After 5 months I'm starting to get a grasp on the language. I listen to the voice of
Russia radio on the web and that has really helped. Now I pick up
a lot of the words, don't totally understand the sentences but at least I have a clue. The thing that was told to me by my lady was to learn the alphabet to memorization and the will help with pronunciation. Who am I to argue with her. Her English is better than some I live around with here. She still gets a a laugh when
I pronounce words wrong. Russian English dictionary is key to have
along with learning some of their slang. She told me if I could learn around 2000 Russian words then communication wouldn't be that
difficult with the native Ukrainians.
Thanks for wishing me luck. I'll take all I can get. I real excited about the trip and she is too. Hopefully it will work out
for both of us.
today i purchased a coarse on the computer but I will not get it for about 3 weeks. If I mannage to find time to study it I willlet you know how it goes.
izi, your example in the market place is valid, but if you have a little knowledge in the first place the market place example will help, but if you know nothing, in this example you may as well be deaf and dumb. I took private lessons before I went the first time and when I got there, I remembered heaps though neccessity. I could not always remember at first attemp but little hints jogged my memory. And yes, it is worth it and I am resuming my interest as I would have loved to know more on my last trip
True ID. That stuff happened to me in Antigua, Guatemala. I was already studying and it wasn't like I was an expert or anything. Man I was green but it was fun. Also they don't speak a word so you have no choice. Here is the scary thing though. When you start learning Spanish it quickly becomes apparent that you know a TON already. It is because of the western movies and TV shows. Everything from compadre to vamos muchachos. It is also shocking how many words are closely related to word families in English
Example
Universidad - university, Abilidad - Ability
Comprehencion - comprehension, preparacion - preparation.
You get the idea.
Problem with Russian is that I can't see that there will be ANY references in English that you can hang your hat on. Hope I'm wrong.
Another thing what is with the funny writing and now I guess I am going to have to get that on my 'puter.
