Guys as being new here, this whole thing of meeting a Russian lady is very confusing, and complicated, but this is what I have choosen to do,and will take it one step at a time hopefully with your in put and advice. My first question is I hopefully will be traveling to Cheboksary around Easter, and cannot find any flights directly there, only to Moscow which is about 600 miles away. HELP!!!!! Bob
Your next step will probably be using a train. Not very expensive and not very fast. Sounds pretty scary for someone who will be lost over there and can't speak Russian. But many have done that. Maybe you could give your woman a train ticket to meet you in Moscow. Maybe I'm wrong but if you have good haggling skills, I think that you can get a local to drive you there for about..... three dollars.
A lot of the major airports have connecting flights with smaller towns. Ask you lady where she lives if they have flights there. Where mine lives they only have them in the morning. I opted to have her fly to meet me in Kiev since my flight arrives at 2:45 in the afternoon. You can contact many major airports via email and they will gladly give you connecting flight schedules and many travel agencies can do the same.
rrlinders, in my first meeting, I only had four days, and like in your case there were no flights from the capital to her city (even when there are flights in the winter, it's better to consider train due to many cancelations). She gladly made the effort to come to see me in Kiev from Kharkov, which is also about 500 kilopeters from Kiev. I told offer to have the person who would rent me the apartments in Kiev buy her an airline ticket. She told me about the unreliability of the service in the winter and insisted on train transposrtation. I told her to buy her ticket and I would pay her when we would see each other. Make sure you insist on her buying a first class ticket. The money difference for us is very small, but for them is very big and she may opt for economy, which is very inconvenient for a 600 kilometer train ride.
I realize it is your first meeting. Make sure you talk to her on the phone, and give her the details of the itinerary and contact information of whoever rents you apartments in Moscow. That way she'll feel more comfortable that you're not Jack the horrible :) Many times I am amazed by the risks these women take by meeting people they've never met before and these people can be criminals, etc. This person who will rent you apartments (dfinitely rent 2 studios or 2 1-bedrooms) will typically pick her up at the train station, then take her to the apartment if there is time, and then take her to the aiport to meet you. Believe it is very cool your first sight to be at the airport, it is a moment that I'll never forget how pretty she looked with her blond hair, her sparkling blue eyes, in her long coat, the atmosphere of the old soviet airport, it is really unforgettable, don't miss the oppurntunity. If you two are meant to click, you will click right there, it is love at first sight!
Write if you need more info and very best of luck! I am so excited when I hear new people making the step, it reminds me myself all over again!
I think your best bet is to fly to Moscow and then to Kazan which is about 75 miles from Cheboksary. You can even make the airline reservation from Moscow to Kazan online at expedia.com. Perhaps she can give you more information but I think it would not be so hard for her to meet you in Kazan. The flights to Kazan from Moscow are not too expensive, but they are from a different airport than most arriving flights from US. You can pre arrange a taxi and it will not be too expensive. If you wait and get a taxi after you arrive you will pay way too much! Plan at least an hour to get between airports. I have checked on this route before, so I have some ideas about this. If you need the info about arranging taxi, I can find it and post it for you later....about $25 or $30 for the taxi transfer...between two different airports on different sides of town!
Kazan is a bigger city and an alternative, but Moscow has a lot more for two people to see and do. I used to online date a girl from Ufa, which is not far from Kazan. In fact, her agency was from Kazan and offered to bring her in from Ufa. The girl was a lot more excited in the idea of visiting Moscow than Kazan. If she hasn't visited the capital, that could be the best gift. If you're not going to her city why not bring her in a nice city and make it classy than staying in a city in-between in the middle of nowehere in the cold winter. Moscow is a spectacular city and can be fun even in the middle of the winter unlike other cities near Siberia for example.
I was very glad to have my first meeting with my now wife in Kiev, which is a cosmopolitan city. We went to a different restaurant every day, theater, everything is there, a wealth of choices. She was very happy to see the capital as well.
If you were to go all the way to Kazan, why not travel the extra 75 miles and go to her city to see her in her environment and meet her parents, friends, etc. makes noi sense ...
I think the best way is as ID said- she will come to Moscow, meet you there and then you can take train, or plain to Kazan, then taxi to Cheboksary. she knows better, I am sure. may be you bothd ecide to spend time in Moscow. again, it depends on her. I know some women in Russia never traveled, and are afraid of traveling along.
Guys, thanks for the info. This is a lot to think about, but at the moment I like the idea of flying to Moscow, and renting 2 one bedroom studios and spending a couple of days in Moscow if the lady will travel to Moscow and then with her along go to Cheboksary. Another good choice is to get to Moscow and then Kazen, she would only be 75 miles from her hometown. Bob
RRlinders,
Isn't Cheboksary right next to the border with Poland?
you may still need a russian visa, but it maybe more convenient to travel via Warsaw.
Neon red, I would be interested in your information on taxi transfers in Moscow, I was there in October, and payed 70 bucks (US) prearranged (with Intourist) from Domodedovo down town. Worst thing was that my ladies flight was cancelled and rearranged for next morning, and I couldn;t get a hold of them, so I again had to arrange a taxi from the hotel to Vnukovo airport, another 60$, and when it came time to leave we had to leave the hotel early morning, and I couldn't get a hold and confirm that Intourist was going to be there early, so I needed another 60 $ ride, and of course I didn't get my money back from Intourist for services prepayed and not delivered / consumed. They commented that they aren't responsible for flight cancellations / changes.....
Maybe I am wrong but I would consider looking at a two bedroom flat instead. You can be a gentleman in a single apartment with seperate bedrooms. Several of the ladies I have spoke with said this would be more than OK and it was very sweet of me to be so considerate of there virtues. Plus it gives you time together. If you do not know her as well maybe seperate would be better but I can not think it would be that helpful unless you were not getting along.
Toad , I am not sure how far Cheboksary is from Warsaw. Are the ladies from Russia allowed to travel inside Poland freely? Also to Shaggy the 2 bedroom Flat sounds like a good bet. What are the cost differences compared to two separate rooms.
Check out www.gotoru.com. I have used this company several times and the service was always fine. Click on airport transfers. I see they have raised their prices some, but still $25 from intown Moscow to Sheremeteyvo is pretty good. I see they list $25 and $30 depending on which direction you are headed, but I was always charged $25. You can make the reservation online from the US, and you can call them in Moscow as they speak English. It does help to have a cell phone with you....but that is a different subject, and I have info about that also. If you are changing between Sheremetyevo 1 and 2 do NOT use a taxi. Use shuttle bus or minivan for 75 cents!!!

When I visited my girl for the first time I went directly to her town, and we went to Moscow for the last three days of my visit. It worked out great because by then we knew each other well and I did not need to have two places to stay. She in fact would have been very offended if I had made her stay in a seperate place! Hope things work out as well for you.
One thing to keep in mind about a flat. In Moscow you need to have your entry visa stamped, and if you are staying at a hotel they take care of that for you. If you stay in an apartment you may be on your own for this. You might be able to get away without it but...I was stopped and had my documents checked in September in Red Square and I was glad all things were in order. I stayed in Russiya Hotel. An OK hotel with the best location in town. This hotel faces Red Square and The Kremlin. I will be staying there again next month, Jan 7 - 10, and I made reservations online for $80 a night for one of their renovated rooms.
Regarding Odessa: I stayed at the Black Sea Hotel which was a part of the European Connections Tour package. That was also a truly bad hotel and at $90 per night (now, I understand $105 per night) over priced as well.
Since it was a part of the package, I do not consinder it MY bad decsion to stay there. But I have to admit it was the ONLY bad thing about the entire European Connections Romance Tour Experience.
Several participants complained about the hotel and out European Connections representative assured us that they had originally booked the Hotel Mozart but that the reservation had been cancelled at the last moment. We were assured, however, that the Black Sea Hotel would not be used again for future tours.
Looking at European Connections current website proves that they are still booking the Black Sea Hotel as is Anastasia (excpet for the Valentines Tour in February).
The great hotel that everyone talks (and brags about) in Odessa is the Hotel Odessa - which happens to be the hotel that AFA uses (and Anastasia in February).
I have a friend who has attended tours in Odessa with both European Connections and A Foreign Affair. Though AFA is more expensive he recommends it, and the Hotel Odessa.
IF I book again in Odessa it will be with AFA and in the Hotel Odessa.
Oh, I see the current price for the same flight I am taking to Moscow is not even $50 more now than when I booked it a month an a half ago. Not too bad.....
