I am going to Chisnau over Thanksgiving- Can you get a visa at the airport? Is it better to stay at a hotel or an apartment? Is it a safe to travel alone? Mark
that's not nice - you didn't tell him about the bears roaming free in the streets hence the necessity to hire an armed bodyguard, neither about the huge amounts of vodka one has to drink to survive the climate, and zero about the mandatory Canadian Fox fur outfit one simply has to have.
Give the man a bit of real info pls, I'm sure he'll be giving his Thanks to you.
Mark my man, unless you're a trained marksman you've got a lot to learn. Safe to go alone? You're joking.... worse still, ask anybody here, you might even survive and enjoy it, and go for seconds - or weeks!
I am very interested in all informations on Moldova, as I have a girl friend there and want to visit her around the orthodoxy christmas days (~ the beginning of Jan.). It is very hard to find usefull informations on prices (of accommodations) in general, or to find informations on how the customs really works (e.g. the declaration of electronic equipement [~laptop, digicam, ...]. I intend to go via railways or maybe bus to Chisinau. The only information I could find, was about the visa and the import and export of money. Do the take Euro's there or are the still fixed on USD? I have a lot of knowledge in travelling to Russia, Belarussia and Romania, but non for Moldova and the Ukraine. Maybe you could give me some advice?
There is a daily flight from Frankfurt, Germany to Chisinau for about $300 to $350. The 3 digit airport code for Chisinau is "KIV". You can get your visa at the airport in Chisinau for about $60. I would suggest you bring dollars and Moldavian Lei. If you need an apartment or need to send flowers you can contact Svetlana and/or Aliona at starservice555@yahoo.com They have helped me alot and are very fair. When I stayed there I have a wonderful 2 bedroom apartment for $65 a night. I still use them to send flowers to my fiance.
i wouldnīt recommend to go to moldova in wintertime with bus/train. it is cheaper but quite uncomfortable.
yes, flights from frankfurt with airmoldova. costs actually eur 280,- + taxes.
electronic equipment has to be declared in airport. there are documents available for this act.
you donīt need dollars in moldova. the euro has the same (at least) importance than the dollar. no any problem to handle with the euro. exchange euros in lei in moldova, as foreign banks seldom have this exotic currency. exchange rates are mostly more bad in airport.
if you really decide to go with bus, visa is available on the border to iasi and leuseni/albitza.
accomodation can be managed for a single room with appr. eur 25,- - 30,-. double room from 30-45 eur.
your name and email adress sounds german. if so, we can handle it in german language.
Start learning Russian. I bought some CDs and play them over and over in my car for a couple months before I went. It proved helpful - I know how to say please, thank you, where is the toilet ?, where is the currency exchange bureau, the airport .. and many other things ..
Your girl will appreciate you taking interest in her language, also !
I went alone, but was picked up at the airport by Aliona and my girl, Svetlana. I enjoyed the food there VERY much and the music on the radio is awesome. The vodka is great and so is their beer. The restaurants are good, too. Excellent service.
Chisinau is a huge city. Try to always be with someone who knows the city and the language. And, keep your eyes open - drivers are crazy !!
The couple that you refer to sound familiar. I seem to remember that some other forum member, way back when, recomended an agency in Moldova run by a couple and I could swear that they were the same names you mention.
You gave their email address. Could you also give me the name of the agency in Moldova.
Perhaps, if you would be so kind, you could email it to me?
well im back from chisinau had a wonderful time weather was cool and even had somesnow while i was there 2nd time is always better and the look in her eyes wheni came thru the airport was worth every penny i spent ill try to write more later hammer
Anyone thats been to Chisinau, whats it like there? Ive been into Russia 5 times but looks like I'm going to be headed to Moldova in a few months for the first time. Any info appreciated.
I just got back from my trip to Moldova. It was great. The woman I met didn't speak too good English so I paid for some lessons. Will probable go back in a month or so
skiired: I've been to Moldova twice. Spent five weeks there. I've written A LOT about my experiences and all my comments are in the archives here. Use the search function for jetmba and you'll find all that I've written.
Don't want to bore people by writing it all again.
