Can any one recommend any good restaurants or similar that are not Expensive in KIEV ? , - by the way i can afford expensive food But am reluctant to get ripped off.
IL patio is nice and is next to Fridays. If you want cheap there are some food halls under Bessarabska Market and Maidan. There are a couple of nice and cheaper restaurants along Pushinska (parallel to Kreshatik)and a favourite of mine is on Mykhailivska about a third of the way up the street on the left. you need to walk down off the street. Im in Kiev now if you want some more details write me on geminidreams_44@yahoo.com.
When I was in Kiev I practically lived at the O'Brien's Irish Pub. The food is good, the waitresses know english and are friendly and the prices are good. Of course having a British background like myself (I am Canadian but my family is from Britian) probably makes me feel right at home though. I can't resist having a pint and watching some sports on the big TV. :-)
you get what you pay for, if you want some ambiance and impress a girl a bit, there is a russian restaurant on the river, I don't know the name but it has something to do with a 'Wheel". I will check on it when in Kiev next month.
cheap...Mc dougles
cheaper...shop at bessarabska market, take home and COOK IT!!!
You're Canadian? Used to fly up there quite a bit to visit a girl. Mostly in eastern Canada, enjoyed Toronto...more English spoken as you go west and accents diminish!!!
For variety on the 'Irish' theme, also try the Golden Gate. But once, maybe on the last night, you should eat Ukrainian at the Khutorok, on the river (for the romance).
Hey Beemer, ya I am from the Great White North (but don't really know Bob and Doug Mackenzie:-) ) I live pretty close to Toronto too. Actually I live pretty close to Buffalo and Detroit as well. Toronto is a great city to go to, some of my family live there and I am actually going there next weekend for some fun. What part of Eastern Canada did you used to go to, like Nova Scotia or Quebec?
Hey Globus,
Nova Scotia is where the girl I was seeing lived..Halifax. I spent many a trip there. Went through Toronto
when I flew Air Canada. She was originally from Newfoundland errr...'Newfinland' as they say, heavy British accents there. Very nice people there. When I was in Toronto, I stayed in Mississauga(??) The girl I was seeing lives in Toronto now.
I loved all the food and never ate fast food or American while I was there. I don't have addresses nor memorized the streets but if you are motivated you can find these: "Sha-harizod" (I don't know the spelling sorry), in the mall underground below the pyramid end in Centrum of Kiev. Great shis-ka-bob type middle eastern stuff, fine, fine looking belly dancers too. We also went a great "buffet" like place roughly two doors down from the JLo (Jennifer Lopez) store that had an Egytian Motif inside with an Orange sign. It was crowded and popular, prices were under $20/per person. I looked at my photos and the name is only in cyrillic so I can't write it here.
Привет I think you can type cyrillic here see if it comes through. Copy and past is easier maybe but if you do not have it on your keyboard with xp goto start>control panel>regional and language>languages tab>details>add>select Russian from the drop box. Then select language bar out of the details dialog box and check : show the language bar on the desktop and: show text labels on the language bar.
The first set of actions will add the cyrillic characters and the last set will place somewhere on your desk top a language bar that will say EN English (United States)(or your primary language). Click on it and it will drop the other languages you have loaded. Click on Russian and you will type cyrillic. To change back click on this little bar and select English or your primary language.
to start with I used white out and wrote the cyrillic characters on my keys. Now I know them like I do the English characters. You can also get stickers if you prefer.
Hi Oz and Martin, I know I sound uninformed! The end of the oval where the (4) buildings with Neon Signs on top and advertising is not the Obelisk end, so the only thing from memory is the pyramid offset of the center. I hate to admit it, but I am really lazy at this point to learn Cyrillic and our driver did not really explain names of the places we went. Centrum is all that I knew and that beautiful center of the city.
Languages are not my forte, but realize I better take it seriously. Living here most of my life I've been exposed to Spanish all the time, but I "tune it out".. I know probably 250 words, a couple lines but no sentences, that is about all. I have the Rick Steve's explanation and answer- you just know a few words to break the ice and then once the foreign speaker is comfortable, they will speak in broken English. That or I will ask the same question to many people eventually finding someone to answer. Sao Paolo was tough though. Europe and Japan were fine (alot of English), except in Japan I got lost abit in Kyoto which is like Kiev because the written form is of characters and no way to explain over the phone to someone who speaks english where you are. Like being at the corner of "Walk" and "Don't walk". Intersection of 12 squiggly marks and 15 squiggly marks. ;)
Oz, started to us that procedure... but here goes- I cheated and cut and paste the correct cyrillic characters from the extended ASCII character set instead.
Sign in Orange says:
ChiÄahok oÁiÄ Be÷eÿ
Probably says chicken, fish, pork as there are icons of these next to the words.
Not much help. The main sign is not readable- is quasi arabic mixed with cyrillic. Tried to find address of jLo store too, no luck. Really is a good place to eat. I looked through all my paper receipts too and cannot find the bill.
The Sharizod place phone is 044 590-1825, the sign is quasi arabic mixed with cyrillic too.
I was only joking Badpenny, from memory of a few years since I was in Kiev there is a McDonalds near 'your' pyramid and just up the hill and around the corner is O'Briens Irish Pub.
Testing if I can type cyrillic...no doesn't work...I'll copy and paste.....ïðèâåò.. ñïàñèáî
Wonder if it will come out??????
Badpenny as you can see...don't know exactly what language that is...but I've seen it plenty of times!!!
