Hi everyone
I’m new round here & i guess this shows, by what you will read in the following post.
This is probably a familiar story to some on here, but I fear i’ve been well & truly done over by one of those Young 'model type 'Ukrainian’ girls!
I’m a decent looking 39 male & who lives in Northern UK.
I pride myself in being the kind of guy who has a 'sixth sense' when it comes to weeding out a scammer. Unfortunetly a girl who i met through the HARMONY DATING site has caught me out i reckon!!
I’ve been writing this girl 'Yaroslava' from Kremenets for a couple of months now. Exchanging around 2-4 emails per week.
She or is it a he!!!!...has been very clever & patient in the emails that she sends out to me before making the kill!
Never once has she directly asked for money.
I won't bore you all with the contents of the letters but to cut a long story short...i ended up booking return flights from Glasgow-Gatwick....Gatwick-Borispol. BIG MISTAKE!!!!!!
I was thinking that we would stay in a Hotel but she told me that an apartment was the best way to go.
She told me the price of the apartment (which i thought at $50 per night was v reasonable)& so i agreed to wire her half of the money ($200) so that she could reserve the apartment for us.
The money was picked up the very next day, after which she emailed to say that she was excited & happy to say that the apartment was now ours & was reserved for the 8 nights of my stay. She also informed me that she would now buy her train ticket (from Kremenets to Kiev so that she could be at the airport to greet me on October 26th....I thought GREAT game on.....UNTIL TODAY when i read her latest letter.
Apparently!!!... she has been to the train station at Kremenets & was devastated to discover that there are no tickets left for for the journey to Kiev on the day of my arrival.
She stated that the only other possible option was for her to fly to Kiev at a cost of $240 BUT suprise suprise....she cannot afford this airfare!!!
She hasn't directly asked for the money but I guess that she now thinks that i am highly likely to cough up the extra ‘Wonga’ to cover her flight.
No mention of the possibility of taking a bus or even a taxi!!
After a reading this email the reality of what has/is happening has well & truly hit home. Man....i feel such a Jerk!!!!!
The only saving grace i suppose is that its better to find out now rather than after i arrive in Ukraine.
I wish i had the presence of mind to stumble on this forum sooner as it seems that around 90% of these gorgeous young things are rippers!!
Are trains really this impossible to get tickets for?? Personally i very much doubt it!
Any comments will be greatly appreciated.
Looks like there's going to be a cheap return ticket to Ukraine for 26th Oct to 3rd Nov!!!
She is playing you man. Don't send her anymore money. Giving some girl you've only written letters to money to come and meet you is always bad news. She may be really serious about meeting you for real or she just might be out for an all expense paid free vacation. You just don't know for sure until you're there and then it's too late, the money has been spent. I've been there and done that. Then of course that is not the worst case at all, maybe she will take the money and not even show up! I also like you doubt that she would have trouble getting a train ticket. It may be true but it sounds strange to me.
Oh ya, never EVER send a girl money to reserve an apartment for you. You can find an apartment online to rent that you can pay with your credit card or you can pay for the apartment yourself with cash when you are there. There are lots of sites on the web to rent apartments yourself from Ukraine.
I hate to say this but these women are not to be trusted until you've met them and spent some real time with them getting to know them, sometimes even then they can fool you after a long time of knowing them. It's a harsh reality that I am finally waking up to myself.
Marco,
If she is in Kremenets then she hasn't paid the money for the apartment, just Google for 'Kiev Apartment' and you can book and pay deposit via plastic online.
OK, don't do this, but tell her to spend the apartment money on air ticket(s).
Also, never send money for air tickets, you can book and pay for yourself Ukrainian domestic tickets via www.aerosvit.ua or www.ukrainefare.com
Tell her that you will book and pay for her tickets online just to establish if she starts kicking and screaming that she must have the money :)
You can probably also book and pay for her train ticket, for the train that doesn't exist, if you Google hard enough.
I feel such a Lemon...almost seems liked ive been 'groomed' over the weeks & months we've been corresponding to one another!!.
The stuff that she has written has been so beleivable & clever.
These girls are good at what they do.
I guess they've had a lot of practice at ripping guys like me. Guys that really do want to beleive it is possible to meet genuine beautiful Ukrainian women online.
I have only spoken to her on the phone twice Zeeco.
Looking back now....It seems that her written English is somewhat better than her spoken. Perhaps a third party has been assisting with the letters??
She claims not to have a phone of her own but her sister kindly! lets her use hers on the nights that i have called.
I know where your all coming from Re-paying for apartments online OR on arrival.
Since she told me that this particular place was known to her & apparantly A++++ i decided that for easiness i'd gamble on sending her half the money.
Even though i potentially stood to lose $200 on this, it seemed worth the risk just to save me some extra hassle. She told me that she had given the cash to 'supposed' owner of the apartment who lives in Kremenets.
The thing that pains me the most financially is the non refundable Airfares that ive blown. Im really not interested in going for a holiday on my own to a country who's language i don't speak.
Martin...i like your idea but i suspect she will tell me that the apartment money is non-refundable & she still hasn't money for the airfare.
That said, i reckon it is still worth a shot.
I will certainly ask her to try & get the apartment money refunded to pay for her airfare to Kiev.
I'll inform her that i have found an 'even better' apartment which i will pay for myself on arrival!!...this should provoke the reaction you mention.... KICKING & SCREAMING for the money.
Just have to hope that she isn't reading the posts on this forum.
Lol
Its a good job i can laugh at my self....otherwise i'd cry!!
Oh by the way this is a top forum. Nice to know there are at least some peeople out there in cyberspace that i can trust.
You could always tell her that you've purchased her airline ticket for her, and that she just needs to go pick it up. The reply would be interesting. One guy I was talking with had the same scam run on him. She said she needed money for a plane ticket, and he responded with "I went ahead and bought the ticket for you, you just need to go pick it up." He hadn't really bought a ticket, he just wanted to see what she'd say. Sure enough she replies with "they say the have the ticket, but there's a $200 processing fee that is refundable after I use the ticket. Can you send me the fee?"
It's a hard lesson to learn, but for what it's worth you're one of the luckier ones. Some guys lose thousands and thousands before they wise up. And it's the patient ones that are the worst. You spend a lot of time and energy, thinking you've really found someone genuine, only to be be crushed and pissed off when you get that letter asking you for money.
Best of luck to you, lick your wounds and don't give up!
Lemon..errr...Marco, cheer up, drop this girl and look for another. Join a site like this one and start writing girls in ukraine, pick kiev or a larger city and focus. USE your ticket you bought already. No use losing out on that money. I use ukrainefare and they can help with most anything you need or google for another site, there are plenty. Tell girls you are talking to that you'll be there on 26-3 and would like to meet...got to turn this into an opportunity for you!! Good Luck!
I am guessing like the others that she is after money but read the last two paragraphs of this site http://www.calara.co.uk/astf/FSUnion1.htm
about some travelers who tried to get a train from her town to kiev with no luck until September. I do not know when they wanted to go but they had to take a bus to another city to get a train. Here is a site that sells train tickets in Ukraine. Check with them to see if trains are availabe on her date. http://travel-2-ukraine.com/transportation/train-tickets.htm It is still probably a dead end but then you will know for sure with not too much effort. If train is truly not available then you could discuss with this travel agency other options. Again I am guessing you will find a dead end but you will know the truth.
Thanks for all the advice given in this thread gents.
Ive also been doing a bit of detective work of my own regarding the girl im in contact with.
It now appears that there 'really were' no train tickets available from Kremenets-Kiev on or around the date of my intended arrival to Ukraine. Perhaps i jumped to a premature conclusion!!!! Oooops
Prior to my first post on this thread, i had only spoken to Yaroslava twice. Each time i called her sister Marina's mobile at a pre-arranged time on a pre-arranged day.
This week, what i have done is to cold call her sisters mobile just to see who answers it.
To my relief..each time i called, the voice that greeted me was Russian & female!
When i enquired as to whom i was speaking, the answer came back MARINA...phew!!!!
She then handed me over to Yaroslava & we talked at length.
I know that one can never be 100% sure that about these girls, but i now really do believe (for all manner of reasons)that she is genuine.
To cut a long story short...This week, I have forwarded her a small sum of money so that she can make the TRAIN journey (not PLANE JOURNEY!!)from Lviv to Kiev.
Sure there is still an element of risk involved in my trip to Ukraine, but as it stands tonight I AM GOING & i'm going in two weeks.
Somtimes you just gotta go for it.
Caution is good, but negativity can stop you achieving sometimes!!
Final thing....when i land at Borispol ive got to have a Plan B (just in case the girl no shows)
Can anyone here on the forum PM me or post up some contact numbers for reasonably priced apartments in Kiev please?
Perhaps you could recommend somewhere where you've stayed before!
Damm! Wrote a long reply for you and then enter this stupid code wrong to send and log in and it erased everything. Tested it again with good luck and it worked. FaaaK! Oh not going to retype. Keep us posted!
Marco.....if you think you can call from airport when arriving and get an apt, not likely. You can hope at very least to stay at airport hotel not far from terminal while you figure out what to do. Most places want a one nights deposit. Taxis is another story make that arrangement ahead. Hope you will not need to use this info.
I did deal with one agency in kiev for girls, if you have no one, not my favorite thing to end up doing.
Never good to send money directly to a girl.
If your complaining about money at this stage, and the girl is above average looking in looks? It's not unrealistic to say a lot of these new "very pretty" young Ukraine girls do expect a wealthy guy, and by the intent of some of your posts - you might be a bit more budget oriented.
Since your going to Kiev - try to find a social event and grab as many agency numbers and cheap translators before you fly out. Those always saved a vacation from going bad. Just pick yourself up and find alternatives.
If things calm down with your girl, tell her you'll take the train to see her for a day...
... balls back in your court if you can calm down the situation.
markonorth,
It's true that you should never send money to a girl you have never met, but as you are already in this situation, give it a go, you never know you just might strike gold. If not, then it will be a great adventure, and experience gained that you can call upon next time.
I have just spent a lot of time looking at Kiev apartments on the internet as I am going there in a few weeks.
A lot of the apartments in Kiev look pretty depressing judging by the photographs on the net. Best value for money with decent accommodation appear to be:

and:

I live in Newcastle. My older brother worked in Glasgow forty years ago, and now travels up to watch Rangers play every other week, crazy Geordie!
