Would much appreciate it, if some of you could explain to me why I am getting two completely different Media perspectives on the Georgian – South Ossetian conflict.
Or is it Russia invading Georgia ???
Or Russia declared war against Georgia ????
Or – America and Georgia forces fighting Russia etc etc etc
Mike – please debrief me on this – I am very confused !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A part of Georgia (South Ossetia) wishs to have break away from Georgia for good.Georgia began attacks to pacify the region at the begining of the olympic ceremonies. South Ossetia requested aid from Russia who have entered South Ossetia and have begun bombing raids on Georgia. Georgia is a ally of America and wish to join Nato also they have purchased alot of new armanments. And Russia obviously look at them as a threat so close to their border. Georgia have requested aid from the west and from the Ukraine. On Sunday the Ukraine said it reserved the right to bar Russian warships dispatched to the Georgian coast from returning to their Ukrainian base of Sevastopol. Its all getting very complicated now. Just a note South Ossetia has significant natural resource and possesses rich stores of timber, manganese, iron ore, and copper and coal deposits)I wonder if it didnt have these would this conflict have come about.
Still, the bottom line is this: Georgia should have stepped back from the brink—and should still do so if it has a chance—but Russia's deployment of such a large and carefully prepared force, not only in South Ossetia but in the rest of Georgia, is totally unacceptable.
Both countries are wrong.
Tom this is an old sore being reopened by President for Life Putin. Putin is pissed about Georgia and Ukraine wanting in Nato. It's a long and contrived ordeal that starting rearing it's ugly head when Putin started sending Georgians out of Russia in Cattle Cars ala the Nazi's with the Jews.
I think Vladimir Putin has made a mistake on this endeavour. What gets me is to hear people say, well we wouldn't have had this problem in the Old Soviet Union. Well keep wishing, you might just get what you want. Russia is going back to the old ways and the West is sleeping at the Wheel. They may refer to Putin as President, now Prime Minister, but really General Secretary works best.
He doesn't even have a family, a family is people related by blood or marriage or two parents and their child(ren) living together, all he's got is a girlfriend with a bun in the oven :)
To be honest Georgia wants this breakaway state back and they have armed and been willing to fight for it.The current president got into power on the back of promising to take these breakaways from Georgia back into the fold. But I wonder do South Ossetia realise that when you invite the wolf in its very hard to get him to leave. Georgia has asked for a cease fire today but were refused by Russia. The fear is Russia may occupy Georgia.
Of course Russia doesn't want its neighbours in NATO. Why would you, what good does NATO offer the average person? Russia would be stupid to allow NATO in their region. NATO is not going to bring economic or social benefits like something like the EU will. Russia have got what they want, they don't want Georgia to be a strong independent country or South Ossetia to be independent either. Otherwise they would have fixed the problem long ago. For them the current situation suits them fine. It’s the same political situation in Moldova.
The Soviet Union was an Empire. Nothing more or less. Like the Roman Empire, the Ottoman Empire and so many others - it was something seen as glorious by the leaders in charge. Soviet Communism didn't work very well as the rules in place were not sustainable (often a fault of a communist system where each is supposed to contribute as able and consume as needed, some choose to contribute less than he is able and consume much more than they need). But many, especially the political elite, took great pride in having established an empire with a common language currency, language and culture.
While the economic system fell apart, the pride and the dream of the leaders didn't.
Putin and others dream of once again having their empire back. And now with strong economic power brought on my oil riches etc. Russia wants to gather its children, its member states, back into the fold again.
Each of the former soviet states has populations with symapathy toward the old USSR. Many think (certainly not all) they were better off under the old Soviet System and would like stronger ties with Russia. Some ethnic Russians are disadvantaged in the newly independent republics.
With growing economic. military and political influence, I think Russia intends to reassemble an empire again. If the former Soviet countries are willing to be taken back into the fold (as parts of Georgia are) so much the better. But if not - I think we will see a stonger and stonger willingnes of Russia to use a little persuation.
Russia may bave lost its taste for communism. But it hasn't lost its desire for its old empire.
And which part of America might have caused it, would it be Chile, Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil, Venezuela, Mexico or might it possibly be Canada or another American country?
Countries have interests, not friends. Russia is there to look after its own interests, just like America in Irag. They don't want to take Georgia back into their fold, but they do want to have a major influence in the region. But I'm sure theres only going to be one winner out of this.
"The Soviet Union was an Empire. Nothing more or less. Like the Roman Empire, the Ottoman Empire and so many others"
well ... gorgia is helping america ... correct
i see they fly home today .. so if they can keep this oil pipe line going to the west ...its good for america ... correct
well i bet thay are in kahoots with the us and encouraged by them .
i also bet there are bigger things going on that no one knows , mabey russia want to get closer to iran or something . i bet they are planning something ..i get the feeling living in russia that they care about there own people . nothing more . i think if anyone threatened them they would just destroy them . otherwise they would be happy living as they are minding there own buisness. like america should dam well do .... look after there own people
equals: i gather the whole thing is caused by america ... once you boil it down . ??
There are sure a lot of "i bet.." and "mabey..." and "or something"'s sprinkled in there to be anything close to "i gather the whole thing is caused by america ... once you boil it down ."
About the only fact in there was that the US did fly their troops home. So what?! They're an ally of ours in Iraq. And gee, what a shocker, they wanted to fly home to their homeland after it was attacked.
Danny, don't let your hatred of the US get in the way of the facts (which are sketchy at best right now)
It a crass comment to want any conflict to escalate.
Take it from me, the sight of innocent citizens of any country being torn to shreds by modern weapons is something that stays with you for ever.
You would know that if you had ever tried to stay alive for an hour knowing that hour could be your last on this earth.
Colin
Pretty well agree with all you say and see it in similar ways from Russian/West media viewed to date by me.
Mike
Was hoping you would have delved a little deeper into the Politics (away from Putin) possibly behind this array of events thus far, and reasons for actions taken by Saakashvili in the beginning ???
By the way its Peter – not Tom. Have you heard from him lately ???
Jet
Yes many, probably 90% of who I mix with when in Ukraine would happily go back to the way it was when Soviet Union. I personally do not believe that the “now leaders” want to return to such state. Power and wealth to them personally – yes, but that’s like all people with influence and power today, in any part of the world. Stronger they get, the more they want !!!
The Facts (????) as we see it – from Russian News Media !!!!
11.30pm 8th August – as the World watched China’s big event
Georgia launched an all out attack on the South Ossetia city of Tskhinvali - total disregard for civilian life. An all night bombardment into civilian territory. Georgian peace keepers turn and attack Russian peace keepers in Tskhinvali killing 15 and wounding 70 Russian peace keepers.
9th Georgian troops roll into Tskhinvali and reports saying innocent civilians thrown under tanks – wounded had their throats cut and women and children sheltering in the basement part of their destroyed apartment blocks, got flooded and hand grenades thrown in on them.
9th & 10th more bombing via air and ground and Hospitals/schools etc purposely targeted and destroyed. Aid convoys attacked from the air and no corridor allowed for civilian escape routes out of the fighting zone.
Saakashvili continues his Media propaganda via all Western channels, telling the World that he is under attack from a big neighbour who is hell bent on gaining more land and destroying Georgian democratic elected government and its independence.
34000 South Ossetia refugees flee into North Ossetia. Russia organises and starts trucking 52 ton of aid and supplies for the effected areas in SO.
10th Russian military clear access via Rokski Tunnel and move into the fighting zone in and around Tskhinvali. Later find Ukraine soldiers in some of tanks captured and destroyed. Black African/American’s dead amongst Georgian armed forces.
11th & 12th Russian have lost 4 planes and approx 18 soldiers. Tskhinvali back under control of Russian peace keepers. Although still spasmodic bombing of outer areas around Tskhinvali from Georgian forces. Pockets of one on one ground fights between Russian and Georgian troops inside South Ossetia.
Russia Air attacks only on targeted military spots inside Georgia.
Russian forces were deployed to Abkhazia yesterday, they have seized the Senaki air base 40km away from the Abkhaz border. Russia doesn't want situation with Russian peacekeepers in Tskhinvali to repeat. Black Sea fleet (Russian) has sunk two Georgian ships (small patrol boats)
Russian air attacks on military targets 15k from Tbilisi capital, a military air base, not the Tbilisi international airport as western channel report.
British Petroleum – confirms the alleged attack of the Baku – Tbilisi - Ceyhan Oil pipeline from Russian Jets, was false reports via Georgian Media.
Food for thought – or all Russian media BS ??????
You have all seen the Western spin on this situation, I just want to keep your eyes open and not be hood-winked into opinions and blame pointing without seeing both sides.
I do hope that the truth will all come out in the wash.
I do think that Russia will make the most of this situation and are possibly already overstepping the mark of “fair retaliation”
I am sure they will use this to destabilize the Saakashvili government.
In my personal opinion, Saakashvili is a very dangerous and I think totally unstable man !!!!!!!!!.
He has demonstrated bizarre actions on many occasions of late, one must question his state of mind. Reports we have of him been under heavy medication for depression and as recent as yesterday, threatened to take his own life.
I am not going to go into opinion that Saakashvili is a puppet of US etc that America is behind this etc – but the old saying “where there is smoke there is fire”
I painted with a broad brush when I really meant the Idiot. Sorry if anyone else took offence.
I think it's well past due that dummy gets the same treatment a certain couple received: they have simmered down and have become positive contributers.
To hope things escalate while innocent civilains are being killed goes beyond putting up with him shooting his mouth off and having to dicipher his bad spelling.
