This is straight to the mods. If anyone agrees, please say so - I could do with a bit of support in this
Dear Moderators,
Perhaps you're as tired of the complaints about the forum as we are of making them. I'm hoping that, with a small change, things could perhaps be improved to the extent that things become more positive and useful.
Most spaces such have this are split into different 'forums'. I suggest that the same thing might be helpful here. Two of the most frequent complaints about this forum seem to be that things often go off-topic (leaving the forum unhelpful to those asking questions, thereby preventing the forum from achieving its purpose), and that the initial questions (scammer, how to be sure, agencies etc.) are all that's ever discussed, meaning the forum is no help to those getting their K1/greencard etc., marriage, and all the other things that the forum's supposed to offer discussion of, but somehow doesn't.
Would it not be helpful to have separate forums for (for instance) "scammers & agencies", "letter writing", "travel", "married" and "off-topic"? These are just off-the-top-of-my-head ideas, obviously, but surely it would at least be helpful to separate on-topic and off-topic?
It isn't difficult or expensive to do, and I'm sure it would make things better all round.
If anyone thinks this would be helpful, or has additional suggestions, please stick your oar in the water :)
fiance.com appears to invest as little as possible in this forum, so I don't expect they will change anything.
But hypothetically, I would like to see an "off-topic" button that ANY logged-in person can use, that wouldn't delete the post, but would tag it. There would be some kind of a check-box on the forum opening page, with a legend like "show off-topic posts," that would be OFF by default. All posts tagged as off-topic would be hidden, unless the person browsing wants to see them.
The button would require some explanation that you don't push it because you disagree with the post ... only because the post doesn't speak to the topic. A "vandal" who abuses the button could have their login killed, and IP blocked for a few weeks.
But this would take some real web-programming effort, and what is fiance's incentive to spend the money?
A much lower-tech solution would be for Olga to cancel the login of any member who makes a single post that personally attacks another forum member. The vast majority of guys here never make attacks: they ask questions, answer questions, or tell about their experiences. If cancellation seems too harsh, offenders could be put on an automatic 4-day delay. This might make junk posting a little too boring.
Muzzy, durak I believe you have some good suggestions to combat the continuous hijacking of topics by the "spoilers". I think the ability to "turn off" posts on a case by case basis would be a welcome addition to this forum. However I have another idea, the additional ability to turn off all comments by a person that you do not want to read would also be beneficial. Think of it operating somewhat like a "spam filter" on your email program. However, this is just whimsical thinking on my part because as in all the preceding... the "spoilers" will eventually succeed in degrading this topic into nothing more than petty quarrels and bickering between themselves.
Muzzy, I don't understand you. This forum is not a democracy, I doubt if the moderators care what you or anyone here thinks how it should be run...it was here well before me and it will be here well after most if not all cuurent members will have moved on (thou a couple here it seems it IS their life). I remember being told several years ago by the powers that be.....if I don't like how the forum is run go elsewhere......it is very true. Seems that most of guys that complain are ones that have not been here for very long. My attitude is 'it is what it is', I take what i want and ignore the rest.....if I wanted group hugs I would be in RWD, I prefer the truth(as ugly as it can get at times),
there is a saying.....a guy may look real dumb but when he opens his mouth( writes here), he removes all doubt!!!!!!!!!!
RB, it's probably not going to work but, as I said in the 'part 1', we can't complain (as many do beside myself) without at least trying to do something positive (that's POSITIVE!) to bring change. I'll even try a lost cause just so I can know I at least tried.
DCV - yeah, nice. As always
Durak - I think 'self regulation' that takes posts to the off-topic is probably a good idea. Perhaps the mods would be interested in something that takes no effort from them to police. The coding of putting in separate forums is so little-effort, it's laughable. I only know this because I built a forum for my youthclubs (it went live just before facebook took off!) Seriously, it's a few lines of code, or about ten minutes using oracle. I just worry about the ridiculous and vindictive abusing the feature, although user blocking could actually be made to work...
Martin - Do you think that requiring a non-web-based email address for registration would stop people creating multiple user accounts, and actually allow blocked people to be properly blocked?
MC - Ah, but just imagine if the spoilers were busy savaging each other in the off-topic forum, and the rest of us could just ignore them?
Beemer - I doubt the moderators care either, and I've never said otherwise. Still, it's do something or do nothing. I don't think any real change will come from this, but it doesn't hurt to try, does it?
I told the powers long ago ..... so often when one registers an account on many a kind of website that website sends an email to one for one to confirm it is their email address thus confirming one's registration.
For this forum any of us can register with any old non existent email address and one's registration is immediately confirmed!
I agree with raginbull' post actually, in scene that it would not help:)
Durak made right suggestions. We know all these available options.
As I have already mentioned before: We left all this crap going just top let all forum readers understand who is who on the forum. as we can see there are many, crazy, probably bored, forum members here, who have been here for last 5 years at least. they have nothing to do in live but argue with each other, get drunk in front of the computer, or forget to take there medication, give everybody on this forum free comedy hours ,and a lot of work to the moderators. We always ask all forum members just to ignore those posts. As if we , or somebody on the forum tried to stop it, those people produce more crap. so we just clean forum from time to time.
if we put all this report,m and clock buttons, then we will have to watch for all those nutcases to not remove good posts, good members, or make another damage to the forum. when we block by IP, they change IP, when we delete accounts, they create new ones. when we remove their posts, the do thousands of posts:) sitting and clicking on mouse , entering image code thousands of times.
so, just ignore them. ask questions related, and not related. people will reply. you will get useful information. i promise you we clean up and we will clean up the forum periodically.
I think requiring email verification on signup is the easiest way forward - I'm sure what ever forum software is being used already has this feature and it just needs to be enabled by the admin.
Whether it be a forum, a shopping site, a travel site etc. etc. etc. it seems they all expect an email confirmation.
On this forum one can register a duplicate user name simply by using fuckingidiot@yahoo.com.au , it is just so easy yet were there a need to set up such an email account, first, before registering a duplicate forum account then that might serve to deter.
And Olga, my lovely :) , this is not a critism, I just love it when you become strict with us :)
Olga, why spoil all of the fun. You are right. The core group of players will surely get more creative. And it will make your job (part time) as moderator just as crazy. By maintaining the status quo at least there is already a data base of individuals who are just clowns. Then beemer won't have to continually update his list of forum spoilers. Or is it mini-coop? I forget.
Actually, Mini Cooper and Beemer18 are both MEE!! I've decided to join the schizophrenia! muahahahahaaa (that's my very best evil genius laugh, btw)
I'm pretty sure that, with NON-FREE email addresses required for registration (i.e., no yahoo, msn, gmail etc., but only isp-registered addresses), there would be far less multiple-personalities on here. Perhaps this could be necessary only for those forum users who are NOT using fiance.com (with the dating site users simply having to enter their site ID to register). Tying a forum user account to a real, financially linked identity (which usually requires credit cards etc. to create in the first place) would mean that blocking an individual user would be significantly easier for the mods.
I still think, though, that separate forum spaces would actually drive up forum traffic significantly. I personally don't see anything wrong with off-topic banter, but when it drags every FSU-dating thread off topic, then the forum ceases to achieve what it's here for. Give it a separate space!
Just something to ponder; the dating site (from the women's POV) advertises "30,000 men", and I'm guessing all have seen the forum link on every page. So, why are there only about a dozen posters on here? (many of whom say they don't even use the dating site). Could it be that people take a look at the random mixture of on-topic, off-topic and just plain abusive, and don't want anything to do with it? 29,980 people deciding NOT to post here surely says something.
Just think how much money those google ads on the right would make if that was turned around!
I would actually strongly oppose requiring a paid email account. Personally, I don't use any like that. If it is paid, it can go away, and after having to update my email with so many people so many times, it is just so much easier to use gmail, live, yahoo, whatever to have a constant email address that doesn't change.
I am not a member of fiance, but believe it or not, this has been a great source of information, the best I had found to date, even considering all the off-topic and bickering (though it would be 10 times better if it weren't there). So, by requiring to be a fiance member, or having a paid email account, I would not be allowed to post at all. Sure, this is their forum and can do what they like, but I appreciate being able to leverage the information and good will of those of you who are willing to give genuine advice. Oh, and the comic relief aspect is there in some cases, it just gets out of hand when a thread is pulled waaay off topic, or too much bickering happens.
One potential would be potentially a super-user functionality. Not a full moderator role, but someone "trustworthy" able to remove certain posts from threads. Finding someone trustworthy is completely another issue. Or, potentially the ability of the owner of a thread (owner meaning whoever starts the thread) to remove posts that don't apply to their topic. In some way it could be abused, but is there anything wrong with the owner of a thread providing partial moderation of their own topic? Just a thought.
Hmm. Considering Olga's comment about idiots sending thousands of messages to be approved, could be good to have a block for particular user's on a given thread too.
Simpleton has said something that I had been thinking.
Muzzy, I rarely, if ever, use an ISP's email address, if your experience is anything like mine these UK ISP's are, pretty much, all as bad as each other and I change ISP's quite frequently, it's too much hassle to, perhaps once or twice each year, notify everyone of changes of email address.
OK I have my own business website(s) so I can use one such domain email address but few people have their own website(s) and will use Google, Hotmail, Yahoo etc. emails.
Simpleton, a thread starter being able to delete replies wouldn't work, believe me, that would be abused and, if anything, worsen the situation.
These are just ideas, of course. The question is how to tie some stable form of ID to a forum ID. A lot of problems go away very quickly if idiots aren't allowed to create alternate ID's at the drop of a hat. So, the question of how to do this remains...
