I've been reading this forum and some of the others on the web and wondered what percentage of men actually take the plunge and get on a plane to meet the woman/women they've been writing to? From these forums the percentage looks pretty low, somewhere around 5%. Any truth to this? I ask because I've decided to take the leap and have tickets in hand to meet the woman I've been writing to in a couple weeks. I understand from some of these posts that the women can receive hundreds of letters but no one shows. If this is true it has to be pretty demoralizing for the women to constantly receive letters but no one shows up.
Also, can I assume that this gives the guys who actually get on the plane a big advantage - actually showing up shows your intentions are serious and the woman recognizes this. At least I'm hoping that the case for me. Please note this is my first trip and I'll readily admit I'm new at this.
I would be very interested to see good data, about various aspects of international dating. As far as I can tell, nobody is really collecting this data, and the few statistics I can find are suspect.
I wish I knew, what percentage of men on the dating sites ever travel! Many of the men are from western Europe and the Middle East, so for them it is not such a long journey to the most populated parts of the FSU. But for those from the Americas, or Australia/NZ, it's quite a haul. It seems natural that the websites will have plenty of dreamers who never follow through.
I know from personal communication, that some women feel quite resentful about correspondents who never go beyond writing. And you can see signs of this in many of the profiles.
Yes 5% is what I have read from a number of different sources.
Also understand that just getting on the plane and going to meet them doesn't bestow any additional priviledges on you; you still have to be interesting, compatible, etc.
fully agree, just going to see them don't mean they are yours, all the other factions come into play, whats the significance of it anyway it only proves one thing you are either stupid desperate or genuine. If you are genuine and so is she then she needs to be attracted to you and all the other bits of shit that goes with it comes into play. So there ya go 5% of us get on a plane and i guarantee that at least 70 percent of FSU women will judge you on looks alone, then money then personality. So in all honesty the chances of success are low and the chances of you being scammed are high the chances of heartbreak is high. So if you meet a good one then best of luck that's when the real hard work starts.

I would say this above statements are true for the guys who have no clue on how to do this international dating scene. Those that forumulate a master plan, who are honest, sincere, reasonably nice men who also have a steady income, who are serious from the beginning and who use the various means to communciate with the lady prior to going to meet her, then I would say the lady will judge you based on your character first, your honesty and your ability to be the man in a man/woman relationship and looks and money would be last, your chances are more than 80% to find a very nice and real woman.
The hard work should start before you ever begin to correspond with any woman; to do anything else, yes risks total failure. Just like you hear about here on this forum. Fortunately, there are many many relationships that do work because many men do their homework and work hard from the beginning. The reason you don't hear about them is because they are busy living their happy lives.
You too can so the same, if you really want to. All of the effort is up to you.
i agree. probably less than 10% get on a plane and come here to ukraine and then there are those like me that are here 4-5 times in a year and still not married yet after 3 years. I admit I am picky and have had many relationships here that didnt work out for one reason or another. me and a lady(girl, really, only 19)broke up after we had spent 3 weeks together on 3 separate occasions. she wanted to spend too much and i wanted sex too much;)
I can say that just because you come here doesn't guarantee success and Im a good looking guy who can pick them up off the street or in a club like last night. and just because they will sleep with you doesnt mean they are serious or want to come with you to your country.
Mike, all I can advise is i hope you have learned at least survival language skills, have learned about the places you will visit here in Ukraine(or whatever FSU country you go to)and know the traditions and customs here BEFORE YOU GO. Sad to admit there is a scammer lurking around every corner and you WILL be on your own if you travel alone so be sure to register at Embassy, dont bring loads of cash as there are ATMs on every corner in the cities and try to use only one bank card here in case you have to cancel it for some reason.
If you go to Kiev, Kherson,or Kharkov I know english speakers who provide good apartments at good prices and Oksana here in Kiev will even help you find a taxi that wont rip you off. at every train station and airport are sharks who will offer you a taxi at 4 times the proper rate. you can go to center from Boryspil for Hr50-70 if you can speak Russian and call a reputable company. If someone is telling you more than 100 then you are being ripped off and that is the first bad experience most first timers have as soon as they arrive.
BUT, I love this place, the culture and traditions and the girls...yes, the girls. damn, I hope I dont catch something...
You think that is right, i have a good relationship with a ukrainian girl, i guarantee that women judge men on looks, not entirely but they do put it down as a tick in the box, now you tell me how can you plan to make a girl find you physicaly attractive if you are not and she is not attracted to you, believe me it has a much higher bearing on a relationship than you may think. Now yes you may have a great personality and a good job but believe me alot of fsu women are looking for the package and looks are in it. The type of woman you refer to is out there but dont be surprised if like me you go in blind get hurt and find out the hard way at first before you meet a good woman, sorry but i can not see how you can pre plan a relationship, Relationships spur from instinct and animal attraction and not a pre set plan of attack.
Figgis, such a positive attitude! wonder why you even bother getting out of bed in the morning in case you get run over, get mugged, fall off a cliff, etc, etc etc!!! Perhaps if you were a bit more "up-beat" you'd have more success with the wimmin!
I have no problem with women, just trying to make a point if you think you can plan finding a woman from the fsu based on your own personal plan of attack you are doomed to fail. I read on here some guys saying they correspond with 3 or more women and will go to ukraine or wherever to see them for a month and meet them, bet that makes them feel great knowing your on a shopping trip and one of them might get the lucky ticket. Jesus just saying dont go to fsu thinking its a done deal there are lots of criteria you have to meet before she will give it up for you too. I have been with my girl for 2 years, have her bawling on the phone cuz she misses me, talk to her kids, i work, i work 2 jobs 70 plus hours a week, i kill myself for her and she apreciates it, so yes i do have a life and something to get out of bed for and i have cracked it so up yours you muppet pomie dave.
who gets on the plane - ????
I started this earlier but it was lost... stupid pad moves cursor when you least expect...
5%-10%- %%%? The real question should be, "Who, who has good intentions, gets on the plane?"
it can be realized that of the few that do travel to meet someone there are different categories of men. the question should be not, "What percentage of men get on the plane?" rather than, "What percentage of men that get on the plane realize what they are doing?"
so? it needs to be broken down further. aside from what percentage of men get on the plane, what percentage of men that do get on the plane have good intentions. meaning what percentage of those men are seriously hoping to find a compatible mate for life. compatible being the operative word here.
first there are the serious men - the very serious men - who for some reason or another decided to look to another country to find a mate. they fall into a short category. those who are just plain fed up with the ways of western women (ME). those who for the clock is ticking and want to raise a family thinking they can get a much younger woman. and those who have exhausted all other means to find a woman in their own territory - those are in a category itself.
to be continued... Happy Thanksgiving to all you Yanks. over the hill and through the woods I must go now. my Russian wife is about to experience her first Thanksgiving dinner with the family. she had already gotten used to the bland food my family cooks so it shouldn't be too traumatic.
continued...
aside from the 'serious' men there are those who are the inquisitive type. The 'I wonder if I can get me a hot Russian gal' type. They may have heard about Russian women through various means and decided to check it out. They discover the many web sites and millions of women ;). And are immediately sucked into the vast number of incredibly alluring women they find on the many sites. "Wow! There are so many young and hot women (girls) that are looking for a man just like me. They must be desperate." And of course the web site will explain that these women want nothing more than to meet a western man and are desperate for a husband... These men are sucked in and play the game for a while but eventually do not 'make the trip'. Or a few of them do and get taken for a ride. Of these many probably realize the ruse and laugh it off - or get it right away. Others may fall hook, line and sinker. Eventually a few of those make the trip. And of those, few are equipped to handle the devastation and underhandedness of the 'ladies' involved. Although a few may get lucky and meet a genuine woman. Very few. And of course, as was explained by someone else, the women hold the cards. They are as vain as any other woman. They do care about looks. But there are the exceptional women who want nothing more than a good man. It is a crap shoot. But, the number of guys that get on the plane who are whimsical about it will most likely fall into the category of the "they are all scammers" group.
Only 5 to 10% of us getting on the plane, is the reason why the girls are writing to several if not hundreds of men at the same time! They don't want to spend years looking either. There was a topic a few lines before this one, about visiting multiple cities, and multiple girls, is it a good or bad idea??? I don't feel too bad about writing to and meeting several girls on one trip,,, they are doing it too!! It's not right for normal dating,,,,, but this isn't normal!!!
As for looks,,,, it all depends on how much money you have??!! If you are looking for a young hotty,, then you better have good looks and a lot of money! If you are looking for woman in her 30's, then maybe looks and money aren't so important?!
I do know one thing about foreign women,, they want status! They want to be proud of their man, as he is their source for status! If he is a fat slob, who sits on the sofa all day,,,, she won't have anything to brag about to her friends and family!
Knowing the language is a good idea,,,, but don't tell anyone!! Use a interpreter for a day or two,,, and find out the truth about her!! Listen to exactly what the girl is saying about you,,, and if the interpreter is putting a spin on her words??!! I only know a little Russian, not enough to help! D'oh!!
There is no excuse for anyone who is writing letters NOT to travel. Why waste time writing letters if you are not prepared to jump on a plane!!
Travelling to Ukraine is always an interesting experience. I have done a number of visits now and seen many different cities, and I always travel by bus or train in the same way as a local. Taxis are a rip-off in any country.
Yes, I do think the ladies there are the sexiest I have ever come across on my travels. However, after dating a number of Ukrainians and then more recently travelling to Colombia for a holiday, Ukraine is no longer the destination of choice for me. Finding a genuine and honest lady in Ukraine is actually a seriously tough challenge. Most are not genuine - fact! Its mainly about gifts, free dinners and money. I have had many wonderful experiences in Ukraine and I would recommend all to jump on the plane rather than just wasting their time merely writing letter after letter.
However, I did meet ladies in Colombia and without exception, they seemed far more genuine and had more pleasant personalities, with less of an edge about them and much more likely to be good marriage material.
But if any of you "letter writers" are reading this, stop being so spineless and get on a plane!!
I agree, yorkie! get on the damned plane! even if to just check it out and get your feet wet. airfare is cheap right now, less than 1000 to buy round trip from USA. meet a couple girls and get experience:)
Whilst there was an unfortunate Tu-154 crash landing incident in Moscow yesterday, I think 2 passengers reported as fatalities, I've recently been reading about the Tu-154 incident of September.
At circa 30,000ft the aircraft lost all electrics thus no radios, no navigation aids, on a Tu-154 this prevents fuel from the wing tanks being used, so they had only 30 minutes of fuel in the centre tank remaining in the middle of nowhere, at 30,000ft, and with only the crew's eyes to find somewhere to put the beast down.
OK there was a lot of luck involved but a lot of crew skill also, by some luck they found a disused (Izhma) airfield, these days just a heliport, the short 1,200m runway hasn't been used for at least 12 years but the manager likes to keep things tidy and manage the vegetation, and the crew plonked the Tu-154 down on this strip, whilst they had reverse thrust they had no brakes, the runway wasn't long enough anyway but fortunately the land remained flat after the runway end which is where the aircraft ended up, a few hundred metres in to the bush!
Not one person was injured and they all walked away, back in the passengers home city a collection has been started for the heliport manager, for keeping the runway semi usable and, at the passengers behest, the Russian government have awarded the crew:
Executive order awarding state decorations to the crew of a Tu-154 plane for courage and heroism
Dmitry Medvedev signed Executive Order On Awarding State Decorations to the Crew of a Tu-154 Aircraft of Mirny Aviation Division of AO ALROSA, Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).
Pilots Andrei Lamanov and Yevgeny Novoselov were awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation for their courage and heroism in an emergency situation. The other seven crew members were awarded the Order of Courage.
The passenger Tu-154 aircraft with 72 passengers and nine crew members on board was flying from Yakutia to Moscow on September 7, 2010 when its electricity supply, navigation equipment and radio communications failed at an altitude of more than 10 kilometres and so it was forced to make an emergency landing at a military airfield in Izhma, Komi Republic (Northwestern Federal District), not designed to handle large aircraft and in recent years used to serve helicopters only. No one was injured during the landing and the plane received only slight damage.
Just goes to show that flying around the FSU can be safe.
Ivor, thanks for the report about the September incident -- I was not aware of it. A fine feat of airmanship!
The Tu-134/154 fleet is getting old, and probably is in the process of phasing out, but many small airlines in the FSU will probably continue to use them for some time. The 134 is the only airliner I've seen with a bombardier's position (at least some of them have a nose windscreen for the navigator).
They've been in a lot of crashes, but their record isn't bad considering their age, flight volumes and service conditions. However, the terrible 2006 crash in Ukraine may have been a circumstance (deep stall) that would have been prevented by safety systems in a western jet.
In the recent crash, if all 3 engines failed as reported, this had to be some kind of problem of fuel delivery or contamination. Sadly, it might have been the crew missing some checklist item.
I don't worry, when I board a Tupolev -- but I try to remember to duck, because the entry doors are shorter than western airliners, and I've bumped my old head a few times.
PS - In 2009, I visited a big cemetery in Sankt Peterburg with a Tussian friend, where we found a corner with numerous recent headstones, all with the same date -- victims of the crash in Ukraine.
