Here are the "top dogs" ranked by liters of alcohol (not alcoholic beverages, but actual alcohol content) per person per year: 1 Moldova 19.2 2 Czech 16.5 3 Hungary 16.3 4 Russia 1 5.7 5 Estonia 15.6 6 Ukraine 15.6 7 Andorra 15.5 8 Slovenia 15.1 9 Belarus 15.1 10 Croatia 15.1 11 Lithuania 15.0 Of these top 11, I see only one (the tiny country of Andorra) that was not part of the 'Eastern Bloc' of Communist states. Fully 6 of them have large Russian-speaking populations. Linguistically, I believe that 7 of them are Slavic, and 2 Finno-Ugric (the third Finno-Ugric country, Finland, ranked pretty high also) ... so only 2 of the top 11 don't belong to these language groups. So if half of the Czech population drank ... and they only drank Pilsner ... ... then the average drinker would have to put away about 12 liters of beer per week, to maintain the national average. You and your drinking buddies had better get to work, if you want the USA to rank higher next year! I've been brewing 'Woodfordes Norfolk Wherry', and bl00dy good stuff it is, whereas I buy the wort and, to it, I add yeast and water and, hey presto, I have a damn good ale yet with no purchase of alcohol involved thus exempt from any alcohol purchase/consumed statistics! I myself prefer the hoppy stuff. I have made some good ones myself. But it is too much trouble... I will do my best to make sure we break the top fifty in the next year. And I will let my buddies know we are behind. Together we will make a concerted effort to bring us into the top fifty. oh the shame... anyone in USA try dogfishhead ale - the 60 minute IPA is outstanding, the 90 minute is not for the weak of heart. more malty with extra hops. good for a sipper but not for more than a couple if you want to drink a few watching the game. Victory HOP DEVIL is another good choice if you're in the east. I don't know what wort is and while I think I know what yeast is, I would not know where to find them. I never had to buy one at the grocery store. Samogon is a homemade Ukrainian Vodka. Two of my gf's friends and I finished half a liter in a matter of one hour in a baptism in Kiev. I was suffering from jet lag. That sure woke me up. A fellow passenger on the train from Simferopol to Kiev shared a big bottle of wine with us. It was not in a wine bottle. That was probably homemade too. I mentioned: www.woodfordes.co.uk/html/shop_online.html Whereas one empties those cans of wort into a 5 gallon fermenting bin (a bucket), adds water and the supplied (with wort) yeast and brewing/fermenting commences, Woodfordes happens to be one of these England ales that one can happily drink at a cool room temperature, it's bl00dy good 'falling down water' however, as far as home brew is concerned, I have yet to experience a good American style beer home brew, I mean I would happily pay bar/pub prices for Woodfordes home brew, that's how good it is! Some kits require sugar to be added, sugar turns to alcohol, but Woodfordes kits require no sugar. Once fermenting, in the bin/bucket, is completed then one transfers the brew to a pressure barrel or bottles, empty plastic lemonade/carbonated water bottles or similar however barrels serve a better beer, wait a few weeks, the longer the better, and then have a party! ben2006 Member send PM   block PM add to buddies Send: 2/24/2011 10:14:04 AM   Congratulations Moldova. I was given a liter once as a gift. On a hot day, after several games of one on one basketball, I brought it out for my friend and me. It tasted just like a high grade beer, but before the liter was out, my friend and I were wasted and vowing not to drink anymore. Someone who spent five years there told me once that there's a city in Saudi Arabia where all of the west's "sins" are tolerated. That's where the tourists go. Women are even allowed to go topless. I would guess that this is where the alcohol is consumed.
