This post is in reaction to the many who post asking about the possible language barriers, and some important points to avoid making a tit of yourself !!!
If you are going to the FSU for the first time, I would strongly suggest an interpretor (unless your girl speaks very very good English of course)
The interpretor will have two functions, one to enable you to communicate correctly with your lady, missunderstandings can be easily made in an English conversation, why would you think it cannot happen between Russian and English and vice versa ?
On one of my early trips I had been asked to get a Russian military style fur cap for a friend in the UK, an "Ushanka" style one.. A missunderstanding when trying to ask my girl to help me buy one got me a haircut I didn't really need !!! :o)
The second and often forgotten role of an interpretor is that by default they can teach you quite a lot of Russian !! Very useful indeed !!
Finally, before you even think about getting on a plane, learn the Russian for "Please" and even more critical "Thank you"
Please is ÐÏÖÁÌÕÊÓÔÁ, pronounced (and this is purely phonetic so don't try writing it this way !!)
"Pajowlsta"
NB: ÐÏÖÁÌÕÊÓÔÁ when used in a different context also means "not at all" "you are welcome" or "don't mention it" ie: "Thank you for the drink" to which you may receive the reply "ÐÏÖÁÌÕÊÓÔÁ", you are not being asked for anything, the person means one of the above replies, but it can be a little confusing for a while until you get used to it :o))
Thank you is
"Speciba"
(again phonetic spelling, but I have never had to write it so I don't have the correct Russian spelling, and I would rather not get it wrong !! Maybe our dear Olya will help me out on this one ;o)) )
NB: it is a good idea to write down any words you learn now, and when there, to help as reminders, but unless you know the Russian alphabet, write them down phonetically, that way you will be able to speak them even if you cannot write or read them.
Manners maketh man, no matter what country you are in.
Your girl will likely speak some English, so make a little effort and try to learn at least a few important words of Russian before you go, and it will also impress the hell out of her !!
Another funny memory here is of my girl talking with her cousin in a cafe we were in on my first day of that visit and with that particular lady. Her cousin during a playful rebuke of my girl, in Russian, mentioned the word "Kazza" (again phonetic spelling) I almost fell off my chair laughing and everyone was amazed that I knew she had called my girl a goat !!
Be warned however, if you call a man "Kazyol" (the masculine version of Kazza) he will likely punch you in the mouth as this is a highly offencive version of the use of the word (women do not like the word Kazyol" either). So be warned and don't try to impress by even using "Kazza", unless you know the person very very well, and that you will not offend them, or anone else in earshot, and commit social suicide by doing so !!.
Last but not least, golden rule and a matter of extremly good manners,
shoes off on entering anyones home, if they insist that you keep them on thats fine, but at least make a move to take them off rather than wait to be asked, or given a scornful look for not even attempting to remove your street footwear !!
If, like me, you suffer from cold feet sometimes, then take house shoes, or slippers as we call them here, with you, they will not offend if you remove your street shoes and put them on.
If anyone has a list of 100 to 250 common every day words to use for 'survival', post away!
or recommendation on best audio or visual courses from travel, directions, booking a room, ordering food etc or pocket size handbook. The net is full of references but you can't beat a recommendation.
When posting the biggy earlier I omitted to mention a third and just as important role or your interpretor.
Helping you to communicate with other Russians besides your girl !!
Do you know how to read a Russian menu ?
How to order something to eat that you will enjoy, and wont want to spit across the room ?
How to ask your lady what she would like to eat,
and be able to order for her ?
How to ask for milk in your coffee ?
How to haggle with a flower seller or shop keeper when buying your lady a present (assuming that your lady is at that moment not with you or it would spoil the suprise !!) ?
I didn't think so !!
Enter the ever helpful interpretor :o))
Best advice guys, first time you go, unless you speak very good Russian or your lady is fluent in English (but of course that would still spoil the suprise thing !!) GET ONE !!!
To hell with the cost, mine was $50 a day + meals and that was when we were in Kiev, away from her home city. We had an apartment so there were no hotel room costs, the best way to do it I would recommend, if you are 3 with your interpretor an apartment works out much cheaper than hotels, and its a lot more friendly atmosphere too. At home in Lugansk it was $5 an hour and you wont want her much more than 5 hours a day, and maybe after a few days only 1 or 2 !!!
The cost is Well worth the peace of mind !!
I prefer to find a lady who speaks English - so many of them do anyway. And if you bring her home to be your wife - you are in for a lot less frustration and headache. Its been said that a large percentage of the marriages like that break up - just becasue she is so lonely and frustrated that she cannot communicate with anyone. I've even heard stories of Russian women in the US who get very dependent on the Russian communities in big cities. She is sometimes so anxious to find ANYONE that she can talk to. An Englsih speaking lady removes all of these problems.
And to those who say it decreases the size of the available dating pool. Sure it does. But its really not a pool over there, its an ocean. And if only half of the available fish in the ocean were readily and easily available to you - I think you would have all you needed anyway.
A good point Jet, but love doesnt necessarily abide with your rules mate :o))
Most women there speak a little English, and if she is serious and you are prepared to pay for it, then English lessons are easilly arranged for her there, and once you are married and she comes to your country there are even more classes available for her there.
Of course there is another option, learn some Russian, that way you will be showing her that you are serious too, and when she comes to you you can teach each other, so many ways to make that ocean so much more enjoyable :o))
$50 a day.........to hell with the cost........are you from this planet?????
Not everybody has your seemingly unlimited funds Tim.A few people are in that enviable postion but here in the real world most people prefer to take care of their "hard earned".
Im not ashamed of what I have achieved in life Drag` the world is the same for almost all of us, if you failed in your attempt dont blame me for it !!!
By the sounds of it Dragster, that might not be enough.
Have you done some homework regarding the cost involved in 'landing' your choice? Some will tell you the bottom level is 8K, and do keep in mind then that this is for a (rare?) low-budget first-time pot-shots.
Spending considerably more though I'd advise you to not only keep this in mind but in fact you should count on it.
Yeah, it depends on where you live & how you go about it, but this kind of affair I would disadvise to anyone who is unsure about the sufficiency of their budget.
Put it this way: I would not even consider to fork out the deposit to Tim for a car I was not sure of if I could keep the repo-men away from it. If ever I'd like to call it mine and drive it ;-)
Wtrav, maybe - your prerogative of course - you'd like to give some numerical comments? Should give a good indication for especially Americans here.
Just my little contribution Thunder...but taking into account all the costs I incurred in meeting my lady and getting her back here to the UK, come to about £2k give or take the odd penny.
And although I might be considered "frugal"...:)),my trip was a pleasant one and nothing was skimped either.I guess I always try to find the very best value for money.
The holidays to see her, the visa`s both mine to go there many times, and hers to come here, the flights, the presents, the flowers, the gifts for her relatives and friends, Including the whole cost of the wedding, and everything I spent to meet, court and be married to my X wife (who was as you know was from Uzbekistan) and have her back here in the UK with me total outlay to the day she didnt come back from a 2 week holiday to see her family (3 months after we came back here)
About 15K UK !!! Thats pounds fella`s, in Dollarino`s you can just about double that figure !!!
Its gonna cost sh*tloads, so if you have any illusions its going to be a cheap job because its a cheap place in the FSU, you are trippin' !! Forget those illusions right now and if you are really serious start doing your sums !!
Flights, four returns for me, one one way for her, and one back there 3 months later 3.5K (500 quid each time and almost a grand for hers to here)
Visa`s 4 for me @ 100 each, 1 for her to come here 300
Hotels, hired flats 1.5K
Wedding 3.5K
These are the big outlays mate, the rest adds up over time, trust me, and the wedding we had wasn't that flash and only had 60 guests.
