Its 208.07 miles from Kiev to Sumy. Thats about a four hour taxi ride, and it will cost you about $200 to $250 (I think) one way. (Of course taxi driver has to drive BACK too which makes it more expensive).
As Rick4girl mentions - a train is about 7 hours and will cost you abot $30 (cattle car, 3rd class) or around $150 or so 1st class (2 to a berth), maybe $60 2nd class (4 to a berth).
I guess a private plane would be about two hours and as Rick4girl mentions, $1,500.
Has the price gone up that much for taxi??? It used to be $150 for roundtrip. I'll check with an agency on price.Just looked...it was $140 each way now
I do know you can catch a bus directly at airport (at B). I would think around $15 This is site with bus times......www.apretttyukrainianwife.com/sanavto.shtml
Jet,, Kiev to Sumy in four hours??? I thought it was more like 6?? My driver hit 145km at times,,,,,, but the road is pretty rough in spots,,,,, like between Kiev and Sumy!!
I paid 150 each way last year and 175 this year. It was through the agency there. Sumylove and/or Chance.
I wasn’t very happy during my last visit,,, so I let the hotel call a taxi for me, it would have been 200USD,,, but you know,,, the agency found out about it before the taxi came,,, and I let them handle it again. How do they always find out????
Beemer. I had the experience where they say "Sure it would be $140 each way, but if we don't have a return fare, it does not pay for us to go." In other words - you pay both - $280 - or they are not interested in taking you.
train isnt THAT muc jetma from kiev to sumy. there are 2 express trains ecah way per day and those are about 50 bucks each way first class 3 to a compartment with table and tv. looks like ukraine may get 3 or 4 routes on high speed rail over next 18 months. keep in mind 100mph is what they call high speed but its better than "express" which is about 50-60mph
There are "first class" express buses from airport to various cities direct but those are also 50 bucks.
Jet...I never had that...if i did, I would ask for lower fare for roundtrip price and pay for it.... most just quote one way...
The situation I mentioned, the agency taxi price of $140 was if I did or did not stay in her apts.
agree with jetma, cost by taxi from city to city has gone up substantially.
If you speak Russian you can go by taxi from Sumy to Kiev in that 140 range but foreigners
will pay more.
Actually arranged a girl to come from there for a friend a few months ago and it was 130 but the driver
wasnt going to dead-head back, he would wait and see if he got a ride in a couple hours from his dispatch or would go to bus or train station and solicit
a fare from someone wanting to go there anyway at whatever he could get to cover the gas back.
Definitely EVERYTHING in Ukraine is better and cheaper if you know the language. And unfortunately I don't.
When I went to Donetsk in April, I brought along two ATM cards. I won't get into all the details about how this happened but neither ATM card worked - for different reasons that were not my fault. I tried everything to contact my two banks and to fix the problem. When I thought the problem was fixed - I tried an ATM machine and my card was promptly eaten.
The only two othr cards I had with me were American Express (barely useful) and Discovery (completely useless in Ukraine).
I spent two days dealing with this problem, trying everything to get my banks to send me some emergency cash. They did eventually but I couldn't even make a free international call to be put in queue. They tell you that the call is free - but try explaining that to Ukrainian operators. Even though the call is free the hotel still charges you and you have very few options, again, if you don't speak the language.
The reason I am telling you all of this is that this entire trip was supposed to be about attending two Romance Socials - one in Mariupol and the other some days lare in Lugansk. The time for the one in Mariupol was approaching very fast and I still didn't have any money.
Finally, after a lot of arm twisting I got one bank to send me $1000 via Western Union. But the Romance Social was to be about 5 hours later in Mariupol so I needed a taxi immediately.
Again, not knowing the language, I was at the mercy of the people at the hotel desk to arrange this taxi, They did - at a cost of $220. I knew that was beyond what it should have been but having little choice I had to take it. I found out later that the going rate was supposed to be $65 - $70. In short - I got screwed by the people at the hotel.
Honestly this is the ONLY hotel (Hotel Eva, in Dontesk) I have ever stayed at in Ukraine (and I have stayed at a lot of them) that I would absolutely not stay at again. Under the guise of being helpful and since I had little choice because of this ATM problem - they screwed me out of quite a bit.
I made it on time - had I not fully half of the entire trip would have been wasted - and the Social went well.
But I need to learn the language so as not to repeat that experience again.
Just want to say Ukrainian people can be AMAZINGLY accomodating if you don't speak the language. There are some REALLY NICE people in Ukraine who will do things for you that nobody in America would ever do.
Example - when I was staying at an apartment in Donetsk, I was expecting to see my exfiance later in the day and I wanted to have some roses to surprise her with. But I didn't know where a flower store was. I walked around a few blocks near my apartment looking for a flower store or just some lady selling flowers on the street. But I could find nothing.
Finally I saw what appeared to be roses in a window so I went in. Turned out it was a store that sold wedding supplies and the roses were fake and not for sale. I asked the woman standing behind the counter if she could tell me where a flower store was and she gave me a bunch of directions that sounded very confusing and I told her I didn't think I was going to be able to find the place.
She said "Just a minute." and went into the back room. She came back with her coat on and said she would walk with me there! She closed the store and walked with me to the flower store! I was amazed. She told she checked with the store's owner to see that it was alright and it was, so we were on our way.
When we got there she stayed outside (it was December). On the way to the store she had casually mentioned that the only thing sad about roses was that they die so quickly. So I saw that the flower store had potted plants and asked her to come in that I could buy one for her - for being so nice and helping me out as she had. She said she I didn't need to do that. But I insisted telling her (jokingly) that if she didn't pick a plant out I would pick one for her. He came in and seemed really happy as she chose a small potted plant.
Then we walked back to the wedding supply store and she wished me and my girl well, before making sure I knew my way back to my apartment.
When would anybody in the US go so far out of her way to help out a foreigner who was lost?
There are some wonderful people in Ukraine.
But there are a few jackasses too like this a-hole at the Hotel Eva who knew I was having trouble - so he tried to take me for all he could.
In 2009, I planned for a 18 day trip and had my limit on my debit card increased. Then,,, I extended my trip by 4 days,,, and needed to withdraw 4500UKH,,,,and it would not work. I tried at least two machines and both failed,,, then, I tried taking out 1,500 at a time, and it worked! I didn’t realize my mistake until after I was home though.
This year and last,, I had problems with the green ATMs. I input my info,, dollar amount, and nothing?? It didn’t say declined,,, or error, or transaction can not be completed at this time,,,, just nothing!
I’ve found the red “Swiss Bank” to be the easiest and most reliable.
So I don’t find myself in a jam,,, I also carry enough cash to finance the whole trip?! A little risky.
I think it is “Visa” that advertises “prompt” card replacement,,,,, anywhere??
I always had an emergency fund at home. My kids were to send me $$ western union or moneygram if I ever ran into problems with the cards I took. It is instant cash!!!! You might need to ask a girl there how it works as I am sure they get lots of practice!! ;-)You just never know what the banks will/will not do.
I have a pet theory (some will strongly disagree) of a strong generational difference among FSU women, estimating the dividing line (for year of birth) around 1975. And I say this mindful that generalizations about people have many, many exceptions.
Women born before then were adults (or very nearly so) by the time the Soviet era ended; women born after were just kids (or not born yet!) when their world suddenly changed.
In my experience, the pre-1975 women are likely to be really kind and gracious -- exactly the kind of person who will go out of her way to help a stranger; whereas the younger gals are like their counterparts in the West (where most of us seem to worship "I me mine"), except that they are often even harder.
One fool's opinion, anyway.
PS I haven't had any big trouble with ATMs, except sometimes having to try 3 of them before finding one that would accept my card and transaction.
Haha Jet! the more you come here the more chances of things going wrong. simple law of averages. When short on money I just scam a westerner for money.
"The hotel, hospital or whatever has my passport for whatever debt, i need 200 bucks to get it back and go home, I will pay you when I get home"
Durak: This very helpful woman was about 25. And to be honest I first suspected that she had been so helpful because she wanted to make the acquaintance of a foreigner. But we spoke as we walked (about a mile), her English was quite good, and she had a boyfriend she hoped to marry soon. She mostly seemed to think it was romantic that a man would be wandering around a foreign city trying everything to find flowers for his girl.
I have had problems with the bank o mat also but know a few that work just fine. I have found my paypal card is the most reliable with the smallest fee. I normally carry 800 cash for emergency.
