According to kiwinorth, when Russia invaded Georgia in 2008, a NATO ship visited Odessa for support. He read that from Russian news and further, he claims there were protests and some were killed. The first two months of Ukraine protests were peaceful. Ukrainians do not like make violent protests. I watched the news all the time. I did not see such news. I recently searched for it, I could not find it. I came to conclusion that this news was made up by the Russian news.
When the Ukrainian protests reached at least 100,000 - pictures supported the numbers. There were reports that it was about a million. That is believable. Yet, Russian news reported 10,000. When I discussed this with a friend on vk, she said she saw news that said 3,000.
I just saw a news report that there was a massive protest for the Ukrainian invasion of Russia. I am sure this got a lot of press in Russia, and but not in the US.
Other twists are the murderers are the protesters...
In the news at this time Putin has asked that his option to invade Ukraine be removed as an option,,,, real or not,,, could be his policies may be weighing on him and his confederates mind. Too late. I do not see that time or history will be kind to his memory. I see more statues pulled down by the proletariat in the coming days, years or decades.
Rb,,, I flew over to Ukraine a week ago, to lead their armed forces into Russia!! I am currently scaling the Kremlin walls at this very moment!!!
Shhhh,,,, be very quiet,,,, I’m hunting Putin!! Ha ha ha ha ha!!
I remember the US ship that visited Odessa,, I didn’t think it was 5 - 6 years ago,,, maybe 4 to 5 years ago but who knows,,, time flies. But I DO remember that it was met with open arms,,,, the sailors got the royal treatment! Plus, I was in Odessa Jan-Feb 2009 and 2010,,,, no anti American sentiment!
yes crazy stuff,, no i didnt read, i saw it on Russian news when in Russia,,, Belgorod to be exact.
it was translated to me by a friend as we watched Russian news.
i believed what i saw until you opened my eyes RB, it was so very convincing, it really was.
a whole lot of bashing of anti American(or ship) protesters in Odessa,, well it claimed.
it was very bloody and ugly why it stuck in my memory.
i cannot believe their propaganda rubbish got me hook line and sinker.
just shows how easy it is to be fooled.
when i think about it now, it may of been two different pieces of video,, the rioting which was some what grainy and then the real clear stuff, they trying to interview the bashed up motherf#ckers.
i remember it because of the horrible sight it was, it left a very bad taste in my mouth how police could do such to their own so violently over a silly protest.
actually its a bit of a buzz to actually had experienced it (seen it:)
i laugh about it now, been fooled so easy.
but if it fooled me so well, think of how many Russians it did also.
building anti Ukrainian decent must of been its part reason.
it shows Puton has been making steps and plans on something for a long time now..
yes i think you are right RB,,, and i did see it, it was also translated very plainly to my ears.
at the time i was taking in anything on the Georgian crisis, why those ships drew my attention.
at that time Russian TV said Moscow also sent some of its Russian fleet from somewhere(not black sea fleet) to intervene with these two American ships on the black sea,, this was before they or one of them docked at Odessa,, nothing came of that.
Go to Russia Today, www.rt.com and read the Kremlin's version of the news. Don't try to comment because they will never let you express your opinion. They will send your comments to a gulag in Siberia, since they can't send you there. I have been awarded their highest honor; that is they will not publish any of my comments. And if you think that is something, my comments weren't even about politics!! LOL
Thanks to kiwi for telling an experience of getting "sucked in" by Russian propaganda. [As a historical note, before Putin, post-Soviet Russia had a quite good free press. But for years and years now, almost ALL Russian TV, including "reality shows" and even situation comedies have been saturated with Kremlin political propaganda.] It's in our human nature that when we see compelling images with our own eyes -- however staged or manipulated those images may be -- they seem to be Truth.
I am now in Ukraine, and in the frequent discussions of politics, my amazement has grown even stronger about how thoroughly people are deceived by Russian TV. So much of what Russian TV has shown is not simply wrong, but actually impossible!
Russia's main message since Euromaidan started -- a message that even the Kremlin will gradually have to abandon -- has been "Ukrainians hate Russians" and want to harass, oppress, or even kill them! Considering the composition of Ukraine's 45 million population, the comparison would be: imagine that in Nazi Germany, instead of persecuting Jews, Hitler had decided to persecute everyone with brown eyes. Simply impossible!
But even though the Kremlin thesis was blindingly stupid, at least 100 million viewers of Russian TV seem to have swallowed it. This includes millions of Ukrainians who prefer to speak Russian, even though they have ALWAYS lived in Ukraine on equal terms with those who prefer to speak Ukrainian. If you ask a "Russian-speaker" about the cruel oppression from the Kyiv government, they ONLY example they can give is that official documents must be in Ukrainian. THAT'S IT.
I believe that Putin is a rather crude character. People have given him a lot of credit for being subtle and clever, a sort of chess master. I don't buy it -- he's shrewd like Don Corleone in the Godfather, but no deeper than that. But I do grant to him, that he understands well how effectively TV can control the population, and he uses this tool to maximum advantage.
Australia has become the largest per capita contributor of foreign fighters to the extremist group the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS), a jihadist organization that controls much of Syria and Iraq, ABC News reports.
An estimated 150 to 300 Australian citizens and residents have left the country to join radical militant groups in the Middle East. A majority of those volunteers have gone on to join ISIS, where they are playing key roles in helping to increase further recruitment of foreign fighters.
"The Government is gravely concerned by the fact that Australian citizens are heading to Iraq and Syria not only to fight but to take leadership roles in radicalizing others in these conflicts," Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop said on the television show Question Time.
Two Australians recently released a 13-minute long video titled "There Is No Life Without Jihad." In the video, the Australians urged, in English, for potential jihadists from America to Australia to come to the Middle East and help ISIS establish an Islamic Caliphate.
ISIS is estimated of having upwards of 11,000 fighters spread between Iraq and Syria. Around 3,000 of them are thought to be foreign fighters, with an estimated 500 coming from western Europe.
Australia has so far reacted to its citizens' alleged jihadist roles in Iraq and Syria by canceling passports in an attempt to ensure that suspected jihadists would be unable to return home and carry out attacks. At least fifty passports have been declared void so far.
lonely,, theres been a huge problem with Arabs in Aussie for some time now.
a few years ago, i think it was Sydney there was almost a full blown riot involving 1000's of people.
Arabs and Aussies due to what i saw as cheeky Arab idealism's and some of their brutality getting out of control.
i had cousins involved in that particular incident in "i think" Sydney.
many of these Arabs have very little respect for our way of doing things down here.
these are the same so-called-aussies you are referring to,,, they are actually Arabs.
Arabs with Aussie passports.
At a guess, the biggest factors explaining Australia's role in ISIS would be
(A) the country with the world's largest Muslim population is Australia's second-nearest neighbor (only Papua New Guinea is closer to Australia than Indonesia); and
(B) those of Indonesian background who are Australian citizens probably have more opportunity to travel (and perhaps more opportunity to grow radicalized by internet propaganda and extremist clerics) than their relatives in Indonesia
Russian liars are all over the media. They infest the comments section of the Ukrainian unrest with their lies, blaming Ukraine, the US, Europe and NATO for their mischief.
from Bloomberg, "Russian Media Goes Far Out to Explain Malaysia Airlines Disaster"
http://tinyurl.com/k3kuxgh
Some highlights, my emphasis added:
"Russians awoke on Friday to news reports that bumbling Ukrainian troops had shot down a Malaysia Airlines jet after mistaking it for President Vladimir Putin’s official plane. Another theory: The Ukrainians intentionally shot down the jet at close range as a 'planned provocation.' Or maybe there wasn’t a crash at all, and the bodies were those of passengers from Malaysia Air flight M370, which disappeared in March.
Most of these weird news reports aren’t coming from tabloids or fringe websites. They’re coming from Russia’s leading news outlets, which are almost entirely under state control...
State-owned news agency ITAR-TASS ... put out a report disputing suggestions that separatist rebels may have hit the plane with a Buk surface-to-air missile. It quoted a spokesman for the rebels as saying they had no weapons capable of shooting down an airliner at 33,000 feet—overlooking that ITAR-TASS itself had previously reported that the rebels had seized Buk missiles from a Ukrainian military installation.
Someone at state-run All-Russia State Television & Radio Broadcasting even appears to have edited a Russian-language Wikipedia article on plane crashes ... to say that the plane 'was shot down by Ukrainian soldiers.'
And Sara Firth, a London-based correspondent for Russia’s international TV network RT, said today that she was quitting because RT was spreading 'shockingly obvious misinformation.' She’s the second RT journalist to leave this year while accusing the Kremlin of shaping the network’s news coverage.
... 'Aggressive and deceptive propaganda, worse than anything I witnessed in the Soviet Union,' is how Lev Gudkov, director of the Levada polling group, described [Russian media coverage] to the BBC last month...
A major source of questionable information about the crisis has come from state-controlled Channel One. The network recently drew condemnation for a report claiming Ukrainian troops HAD CRUCIFIED A SMALL BOY BY NAILING HIM TO A BILLBOARD in the city of Slavyansk. No other news organization could find witnesses to the incident, which Channel One said took place before a crowd in the city’s central square. Among other dubious elements in the report was a glaring issue: There’s no billboard in Slavyansk’s central square."
"that bumbling Ukrainian troops had shot down a Malaysia Airlines jet after mistaking it for President Vladimir Putin’s official plane"
But Putin was on the "dog" (cockney rhyming slang ... dog = dog & bone = phone) with Obama when news of the incident broke or was Putin calling Obama from his official plane?
Ukraine finally admitted yesterday that its military shot down a Russian airliner that crashed into the Black Sea last week, killing all 78 passengers and crew.
Evhen Marchuk, the chairman of Ukraine's security council, conceded that the plane had probably been brought down by "an accidental hit from an S-200 rocket fired during exercises".
"Earlier on Tuesday, Putin signed into law tougher punishment for public calls for separatism in Russia, including up to four years in jail, but he denied any plans to clamp down on civil society."
