When you fly you have to go to the airport then when you land airport to the city. When you take the train it's city centre - city centre. Try to find the express options. Good luck! durak Member send PM   block PM add to buddies Send: 11/27/2014 11:35:30 AM   btb, Good catch on the country name -- I was going to scold you :) Saying "the Ukraine" is thought to give the impression that it is some kind of generic territory (as in "the forest" or "the mountains") -- which is exactly the position of those who want to recreate the Russian empire, insisting that Ukraine is not a real state. So this has long been a sensitive point, but obviously in 2014 is very much more so. There's a counterpart in Russian: usually, the preposition corresponding to English "to" is used to signify being in a country, but I was taught that in the case of Ukraine, to use the Russian preposition most often translated as "on". It's the same idea, Ukraine as a generic territory, not a true country. So now I say "v oo-kra-een-ye", not "na oo-kra-een-ye". Glory to Ukraine! I can say, I'm going to The Urals. I wouldn't say, I'm going to Urals. By the same token I wouldn't say, I'm going to The Uganda. I would say I'm going to Uganda. Only russians say "na Ukraine" well we can say "na Rossie". I took a taxi once to the airport. Anyway the taxi broke down half way to the airport. The taxi that broke down hailed another taxi and gave part of the money I paid him to the next taxi. In other words I didn't have to pay any more. The hotel was on the main street,,, and I always copy hotel info and a backup or two for each city. I called a girl that was in Nikolaev and told her I was at a certain hotel in Herson,,,, she didn’t know of the hotel because she had never been to Herson?? Going back to Kyiv from Sumy,,,, the driver couldn’t find my hotel either, I had a map with an arrow pointing to the old Slavutich hotel, which was across the river from that huge statue. He was on the phone with people and still had a hard time. What he did several times was to talk with other drivers while at a stop light. Another thing that was funny from that trip,,, while we were driving around,,, I saw a road sign pointing to Odesa,,,, and I pointed to it. When being drove from Nikolaev to Kyiv,,, we were on the main route between Odesa and Kyiv for the last third of the trip. I remember going past the huge statue, then over the bridge and turning left. That road with Odesa on the sign was the right road to take. The train system in Ukraine is safe, fast and efficient. Just get your taxi to take you to the train station. If you're smart you'll already have your ticket printed out which you purchased online so you don't have to deal with ticket counters, but even if you didn't there are English speaking staff in most train stations that can process your ticket. Then when you get to your destination you just get another taxi to take you to your hotel. Easy schmeesy.
