Hi all. Question about travel in Baltics for anyone who has an opinion...
I have time to play and am planning on meeting friends (of the feminine variety) through this site as I travel through the Baltics and FSU. I had intended to travel by air, train, taxi, hotels etc..
Now. My preference, instead, is to throw a bed in the back of my van and tour the countries. Much more freedom to roam. No heaving luggage around and a saving on accommodation.
Anyone have any tips, experience, concerns or web links that could help me with this?
Hope the van is armoured mate and that you carry an extensive wad of cash and plenty of ammo to defend yourself!!!
There are lots of ways to travel through the Baltics and the FSU,but take it from me if you have to ask questions about it FORGET IT.
I don't mean to sound derogatory but driving a car in the FSU has enough drawbacks let alone living in a van.
Hmmm, Armoured van... check, M-16... check, Kevlar flak suit... at the cleaners.
Oh, don't forget the Lava lamps, shag carpet with matching floor pillows, Huka, %#@^%$uana and lots of money for... shall we say someone's benevolent fund. Now you're rockin. The Cold War Magical Mystery Tour.
Just to clarify.. I'm not completely mad (I think). I WONT be driving in Russia. But AM considering the Baltics and would probably leave the van in a lock-up somewhere, either in Tallinn or Helsinki.
Maybe the climate and lifestyle here is making me lose some of my previous caution. I had a career in the Navy so I was used to finding myself in dangerous situations but that was a few years ago now. The postings here make me think I will be heading into downtown Beirut!
However, that's why I asked the question.
Hi Man. I am a Brit, living in the Algarve, Portugal.
lol@tony...........and blushing slightly I still have a lava lamp!!!!!!!!
Quiet Charm:
as I said in my reply I didn't want you to think I was scaremongering or anything, but trying to travel the way you first suggested is riddled with problems and dangers too.As for the places you mentioned,Helsinki shouldn't hold any problems, but Tallinn still might.Even though the soviet system is no more so many of the police forces around the FSU still enjoy "toying" with foreign tourist driving in their countries.
Beirut its not,but I would still consider it VERY carefully!
Hey QuietCharm, You being British and all probably know that Aussies like to travell. Many after leaving school go backpack around Europe and places that Americans have never even heard of, for a year or so on a shoestring budget. I know guys that went through FSU countries as far back as 30 years ago and are still alive and well today. One guy took a job driving a tour bus in Russia. ....... For some, it is better to play it safe and miss out on the action........But would a veteran lone wolf adventurer feel the necessary to stay with the pack on this? Did it suddenly get unbelievably out fo control over there?..... The question is From whom and where does all this fear come from?
"The postings here make me think I will be heading into downtown Beirut!"
The only difference between FSU cities and Beirut is that many homes in the FSU have glass in their window frames !! But believe, there are many mnay similarities in the condition of the place, and the dangers involved.
I ahev told you much more in the email I worte you today QT, hope you wil change your mind about driving your trip away !!!
"Did it suddenly get unbelievably out fo control over there?."
Yes it Did man, when the wall came down it was every man for himself, and trust me they took that very Very litterally !!
A freind of mine there gets 5 to 10 emails every day offering them Kalashnikovs and as much ammo as they can carry for very very cheap prices, the FSU IS a very dangerous place these days for anyone stupid enough to take silly risks !!
Its going to be at least another 10 to 15 years before it settloes doiwn again and order is fully restored !!!
Yes there is a good legal system there now (well becomming better lets say) but thats not much use after the fact when you are dead in a ditch with your wallet and cards gone, that they perp` might be caught and punished is little consolation to you !!
I wouldnt advise it these days GLT,
years back when students did it before the fall of the CCCP there was law and order in the FSU, that is not the case in many areas these days, its almost anarchy in some areas as the powers that be havnt managed to get a rein on the whole mess yet !!
The biggest problem is that the gangsters are very wealthy, and the police can be cheaply bought, as can the courts, so honest straight people dont stand a chance and have no recourse to the legal system because they cant afford it, and you or I are not savvy enough to survive it either !!
