I thought I would be helpful to our Russian ladies who have to pay for translation services by translating my letters in Russian for them for free. I discovered a fairly accurate Russian-English translation web site: http://translation2.paralink.com/
I send my letters in english and in Rusian. The downlside to this site is the transulator can only transulate a small amount of content at a time. Sending your letters in Russian and English I think is considerate and an act of kindness to the women who may have to pay for a translation.. Maybe others know of better free web translation sites?
Well Frank, All the women I have corresponded with really didn't think that was a good idea to use an electronic translator. I was told every time that it did't give an accurate translation. Ask your girls opinion to see what she thinks. If she gives you a green light then by all means keep using it.
Unless you're really deep deep deep into finding some rural, true to form old fashioned russian style woman with old fashion style famile values, I'd expect her to take the initiative, discipline and effort to learn the language of the man she is seeking to attract...amen #2
franklcsw I do make translations, not of letters but of different documents and I do translate books now, from my past experience with electronic translators...they are not good. After you use it you have to correct the text very carefully, because the context changes so greatly!! Did you ever make an experiment, translate an English text into Russian and then back into English (all with electronic translator), in most cases you will be surprised how the text changes, and in the end it has nothing to do with the original. I do not mind electronic translators...but really they are not worth a serious talk. Sorry, that's what I gained from my experience.:)
Ptichka is right as always :o)
If you want to see how acurate it is, write something in English, translate it to Russian, and back to English. Having been married to one Russian I can tell you that it doesnt even come close most of the time !!!
But there is one big advantage of electronic translations...you don't have to type the whole text but just to correct;)))) Saves much time and energy:)
Actually, I did translate the Russian text back into English and it was very good, which is why I was suggesting others use this particular web site.
While I think is good to encourage women to learn English, I also think it is good for us to be kind and supportive to these women who have to make most of the sacrifices by, hopefully coming to a foreign country and accommodating to a different culture. What kind of relationship are you going to develop if it becomes all about you and your needs. So help the ladies out a little bit, okay?
I (and we) are having immense fun with me attempting to meet her half-way and I continue to surprise the 'socks' off her everytime leaving her in hysterics/shock ;)
Initially, phone conversations were not that fluent with the obvious language barrier and they're far from perfect now but OMG they're so much better when you yourself put some effort in whether it's just talking on the phone or actually being with them - I can't stress enough the value and benefit in motivating yourself and opening your mind to the effort and sacrifice they have to make. Conversation is certainly more daring and varied than it first stated out as. Whilst I don't envisage being fluent, I'll do what I can, when I can; and what seemed alien a few weeks ago, is becoming clearer but still a steep hill to climb. Relatively speaking, I would feel quite ignorant in hindsight if I made no effort to learn or accept her ways as part of every day life. To embrace it and be involved in it, takes the relationship to a level i've never experienced before; one normally taken for granted
Ive used that translator Frank, my opinion is that it is as equally misleading as any other machine translator. It will say the exact opposite to what you mean........Gee!......I wonder why that nice Russian girl didnt want to talk to me after I accidently told her that I was a bit of a "player
I guess there are millions of examples what the original turns into when using the electronic translators...but if we will list them all here, I guess there will be no use in that:) But the mood will go up very very highly:))))))))
"I also think it is good for us to be kind and supportive to these women who have to make most of the sacrifices by, hopefully coming to a foreign country"
Using an electronic translator is not being kind, supportive or sacrificing damn all !!!
Its being bloody lazy !!
If you want to write to her in Russian, learn to speak and write it, that would fulfil all 3 of your desires to meet your lady half way when it comes to language barriers.
many here know I have learnt a lot of Russian in the last 2 years, and I am still learning, hard, my grammer and pronounciation suck mcuh of the time, but my Natash` is so grateful and appreciative its untrue !! She helps me at every chance she gets, because she knows I am doing it for her and for Us, and I am sincere about it !!
Thats how you make you lady feel that she means something to you, genuinely meet her half way, don't try to fool her into thinking that you know more than you do, because when you meet you will fall flat on your face !!
If you dont want to write to her in Russian then write in English, because using these "online translators" will either insult her intelegence as she will know you are being bone idle, or you will lose her anyway because something will be translated wrongly and missunderstood !!!
Or you could send our dear Ptichka $40 a month and she could translate them for you, properly ;o))
Dont worry honey, I would dream of taking a percentage, you can keep the whole $40 :o))
I intend to fall flat on my face, but I think I know what you mean! ;)
I cannot see how you cannot meet her half way with the language barrier. It's absolutely great when you get your teeth stuck into it (the language) and creates a better tighter bonding one that is seen to be more genuine and committed.
One final clarification on this topic and then I’m done with it. Everyone’s feedback was appreciated (although albeit a bit annoying at times). I write my correspondence in both English and translated Russian. I have to be realistic, for me to learn Russian sufficiently to be understood would take years to do so. There is a lot of helpful info on this forum and I am going to continue to learn more on the topic and yes, I will try to learn Russian to.
