Culture
Is there room for thread about culture? Is there need?
In USA there is much false information and much ignorance! And Hollywood does not help at all!! (and why use egyptian actor in Dr Zivago?).(-then again Moses did not look like Charlton Heston at all !! - not truth in movies!)
I saw 'feature' about Gorbacbev. He was what germans call 'Mensch' - human being. And he was more sad about losing wife than about losing Empire. Feature also showed him with family and friends, outdoor party with food and concertina-music.
Strange that USA and UK worked with Josef Stalin (see friendly picture from Yalta) and Reagan called Gorbachev's USSR "The Evil Empire". Stalin was not 'human' - and look at treatment of wife!
Perhaps thread should be about 'false pictures' in west. And what is truth.
(and perhaps you start by looking at NTV)(?)
Thanks for your post... Like yourself as I have investigated Russia in my own little way, I've become aware of all the hilariously incorrect ideas I had about Russia, and that my culture has about Russia.
The best thing about Russia are people. I am sure they are a total contrast to what you are used to. For one thing, it is normal to for young people to be intellectual and interested in art, history, literature, philosophy and culture (embarrassingly enough, some of my Russian friends were surprised that Americans do not know certain American authors that they had known and read).
Also people in Russia are generally livelier and free spirited than one can imagine (when you do not have to worry about mortgage payments, health insurance, car insurance, it’s much more easier to be that way). They are open, friendly and naturally love meeting new people.
Marinka, right you are. In fact there is the biggest difference between making friends in America and abroad. In the USA to make friends you often feel that you have to prove your worth to others, especially among the young crowd, to gain their attention or interest. Outside of North America though, people tend to just like you just for you. Even in Japan where people are generally shy and not very outgoing treat you very well. Friendships in the USA aren't as strong, enduring and deep as those are abroad. This is well known all around the world. We Americans are just too independent for that. Many people in the USA have lived in their homes for 10 years without ever getting to know of their neighbors! Something, which is unheard of in other countries!
Marinka, is it the first time you've been on the board? I've never noticed this nick before. If yes, welcome!
A few words to add...In Russia many women (even if they look like models) will spend time with you if you just ask. Even if the answer is "no" they do not look at you like you are not good enough for them or that it was rude or inappropriate of you for even trying. They do not have the American female mentality that they are too good to waste time on you. So, you don't feel intimidated by them and this makes getting them into your social circle or getting into theirs effortless.
I am new with the forum. I've been reading the posts and got interested. Actually I am not looking for a foreign partner at the moment. But to say that I'm not curious would be unfair from my part. Since I'm a "newcomer" I will be sharing my opinion from time to time as a start.
Reagen referred to the Evil Empire of communism, not the people of Russia. Second Gorbachev was smart enough to know that communism would not work for the survival of his country.Stalin when it came to murder, made a Hitler look like a choirboy. Also in World War Two
Hitler would have never made the attempt to attack Russia if Stalin had not killed some many of his Generals due to his paranoia. Hitler
made a miscalculation in the weather and the fortitude of the Russian people. They didnt fight for Stalin, they were protecting their homeland. I know some Russian officers shot their soldiers for Running but those were desperate times. The officers feared retribution, because failure not only meant the loss of their homeland, but many feared being executed for failing.
Thank you both for your ideas and sharings... obviously, Russia is not "heaven", i.e., everything is not perfect "over there", but if the things that you to shared are even 10% true, about Russians been more open in general, then I'm really looking forward to getting to know this culture!
I mean, the first Russians bride web site I looked at the beauty of the women really shocked and delighted me.
However, I found an even more amazing thing, the ideas sentiments and feelings that SOME of these women were sharing. I've never read or heard anything like what I was reading... Which if I had to put words, I would call:
Genuineness
belief in fate and love
deep, deep heartfelt desire to adore and be adored
the expressed desire to really know the heart and soul of their partner, and be known themselves
This idea that true love was like the sweetest poetry or the sweetest wine
When I read some of the posts on this thread, about Russian culture, feel a little hope that maybe some of the sentiments expressed in some of these ads were for real.
Actually, had Hitler treated the people decently (yeah, historically wouldn't have happened) in the Soviet countries he had invaded, Russia probably would have fallen. The citizens of those countries first saw Hitler as a liberator until his real agenda was exposed.
Any way, history consistently shows that the victor writes the history books.
We were VERY lucky to have won the war in the Pacific. I think we were lucky to win the war in Europe.
Had Hitler trusted Rommel, we probably would not have won the war in Europe. However, had Hitler kept up his bombing of military targets in England instead of suddenly changing to bombing civilians in London, the outcome would likely have been different, too. One source quoted that England was at most 4 weeks away from having to surrender due those bombing runs on infrastructure. Hitlers bombing strategy change actually saved England.
There does seem to be one continuing facet in life, though. We continue to not heed the lessons of history.
How true Scott on the history part!
Ignorance of history is to let tragedy repeat itself.
I think and I may be wrong, the only soviet country that treated him as a liberator was Ukraine because they hated the soviet occupation. They eventually saw through this. I guess it was better to dance with the devil you know, then the devil you don't know.
Both Stalin and Hitler screwed up their armies. Neither was a military
strategist, though they thought they were.
Only way evil can triumph is for good men to do nothing!!
There are some very close statements in meaning to that last part.
If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.
No man has power over you that you do not give him.
Of course, there the chemistry corollary to the first one.
If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the precipitate!
You stated you are a scholar of the American Revolution. If you have not already read "The Real Lincoln", give it a try. If you get emotional over the American Revolution, I can't imagine what this book might do to you.
By the way, "Creature from Jekyll Island" was very informative. I was aware of about half of it. I was not aware of the duplicity of the nations largest banks in the entire situation.
"When I read some of the posts on this thread, about Russian culture, feel a little hope that maybe some of the sentiments expressed in some of these ads were for real"
Seth,
I am sure if you go to Russia you won't regret it. I talked to many Americans who came to Russia (some of them not for the first time, some have been to the Ukraine, and they all told me that they had the best time or the most fabulous vacations in their life.
Sanchopanza - I am a firm believer in supply and demand - meaning if there was a genuine interest in history then people would ask for it. Schools are little more than day care centers, and academics is not the first priority. And of course parents are so caught up making money (or ends meet) that they want to know that their kids are taken care of during the day rather than getting a real and useful education. And there is plenty of stuff available for people who have an interest in history - so it's not just the teacher's fault.
(By the way, I am not a teacher)
It is especially gratifying to have some Russian women writing comments on this board. Often - some of us old-timers (meaning those on this board a year or so) were trying to expain to new comers - how different Russian women were; how unique and refreshing their personalities are. There is no need to do than anymore. For with these new contributors it is selfevident.
Do any american guys here have any doubt that if we had American female writers here, there would be cheap-shots, profanity, typical feminazi comments in every single post. And it would not be becasue this is a topic that they disagree with - it is that they are incapable of making a point any other way.
The Russian women on this board - are what real women are all about. It is why we (the men) are willing to spend considerable time and a bit of money looking for these gems that America stopped creating long ago.
One reason that Americans are less lively and active and less able to carry on real scoial relationships... television.
The current generation and the last were raised by a hypnotic machine that we could simply zone out in front of after school or whenever. While television certainly certainly exists and has existed in FSU counties - I am AMAZED at how many people get by WITHOUT ONE. I am further amazed at how little it is on!
Socialization (learning to associate with others) is an ongoing learning process developed by practice. Television is a passive mind numbing way that we never really learn to Socialize like our grandparents did. Russians still do.
Yes, Jet, right you are...
Television is a pervasive element in American society today and is seen as having a great deal of influence, especially over the young. Numerous concerns have been raised over the influence of television and the impact it has on American social values. That impact is often negative, though perhaps not intended to be so. Television from its beginning has presented itself as a reflection of American society rather than a means of shaping it, yet critics charge that television does shape values and often does so by negating the social values considered most acceptable by society at large. The excuse for doing so is that the fact that people watch shows that they are not offended by the values seen on television. However, many people are offended and have challenged television to promote values beneficial to society.
