Thanks for the tip Oz. I'll look out for it. I recall buying sans free beer in france, never do that again. Always a good thing to know what the label actually says before you buy it.
lol............nooga...you HAVE to explicitly ask for water with NO GAS, NO GAS....unless you want to drink that carbonated stuff...yuk.
So you fell for that broken pipe stuff....well get you used to feeling that shaft your entire time there, hope you brought large bottle of petrolium jelly so as to not hurt so much....I am sure people will see you from a mile away!!!!
'sans free beer'........I think that means no free beer!!!
How r u Ben?? Be in your part in early October.
Since I like to cook breakfast when I am in FSU, I always find a market to buy my groceries. First time in Ukraine, I bought my veggies, potoes, bell peppers, tomatoes, fruit, oil, juice, eggs...easy because you can see it. Now I need butter, went to right section but could not figure out which one was right, tried looking at pictures, saw a cow, figured not right, saw something that looked like spreading, so I figured that was right, when I got back to apt and I found out it was cream cheese, yuk.....went back, bought two others that looked like it would be butter and when I got back....one was cottage cheese and the other was margerine......now when I go back, I have list of words in russian of things that I want to buy so I can get correct item.
It means alcohol free beer. I don't recall exactly the wording. Maybe it had sans free alcohol on it. Either way it was a waste of money. Took a few beers before it clicked.
I'm good beemer. Back in Moldova at the moment, should be here for 3 weeks. Early October you reckon. I maybe around. Going to Crete Oct 07 for a few days at this stage, but otherwise should be here. Would be good to catch up. Yeah butter catches me out as well, as does milk. Just because its got a picture of a cow doesn't mean its milk. Butter my wife calls oil. Causes from confusion at times.
Reason I asked is 'sans' is like spanish 'sin' which means 'without'...maybe it was
sans alcool biere....we all know nothing is is 'free' in life.
Probably around 8th or 9th of October at this stage Ben.....goiing to use bus again, from Odessa, this time going in direction of Moldova. One nice thing about using bus is I can decide at last moment when to leave.... plenty of buses!!!
The first time I went to the market there I translated a list of what I wanted. It was about 8 AM and not to many people there. There were a couple ladies stocking shelves and I found a little bit of what I wanted and then showed my list to one of the ladies. She led me all around the store filling my list but there were two items we decided were not there (I was making chile and some oatmeal cookies, so there were some spices on the list that could have not been translated right). I was checking out and she found one of the two items and came running yelling to check out counter with it. Moments like that are priceless.
But I still have to watch the water close. The worst thing is that a lot of the brands of bottled water have the name brand in the big letters instead of the kind of water. I could sound out word and the first time my lady had helped me buy groceries and she got water with gas and I did not even know there was such a nasty tasting water until at home I tasted it. The next time I went to the supermarket before she had come over in the morning and I understood Mineral on the label and again being naive and thinking that was natural ground water bought it. If you know Dnepropetrovsk the supermarket was in the center and my apartment was half way up the big hill on Karl Marks about a miles walk with a bag of groceries and I was on the 15th floor. I got to the building, the elevator was down just at that moment, I climbed the 15 flights of stairs. I set the groceries down and was going to have a big drink of water. What a rude awakening nastiest tasting water I ever tried to drink. I think I started drinking tap water that day.
The third time I stayed in that apartment I realized there was a market right across the street from the apartment. I did not feel very smart that day either.
Nice story Oz....I got my list now in russian. I would like to introduce my friends restaurant to 'salsa' for their 'burritos'( tortillas with chicken and fillings), I think that would add a spicy taste, not sure how expensive it will be or if they can get ingrediants. I was going to bring a can of jalapenos..you know put hairs on chests, agitate ulcers or clear some nostrils.
went to obriens, EXPENSIVE but did we meet some people who were helpful!
They even upped the ukrainian landlord for the rent. they will hook us up with better apartment and travel2sevastopol deleted this guy from his website. we'll be right!
nooga,
O'Briens are not overly expensive for a western standard establishment, O'Briens in Zaporozhye is the most expensive of the western standard places there also (except that they gave me a 10% discount card :) but only slightly more expensive.
BUT, you gave the impression, in your previous post, that you had no place to go, you had no idea where to eat because you couldn't speak the language etc. hence O'Briens served your purpose and at least you've had some good food and you're not starving, correct?
My lady developed a taste for Macho Nacho's at the "Last Chance Retaurant" (which actually promotes itself as an English Pub) at the Yalta Intourist Hotel. Unfortunately said restaurant did not offer the dish this year. It DID offer the "Big Ben" Hamburger - which, by the way, was the WORST tasting hamburger I have ever had in my life. It was brought to the room by room service and had the most rancid nasty taste you can imagine.
Last year the food in this particular restaurant (The Last Chance) was much better than this year.
I brought hot salsa and nacho cheese sauce to her in January. I also brought corn chps which we warmed up and made my own version of Macho Nachos - without beef though. They were spicy. She liked them.
Jet...how did you get that salsa all the way to ukraine without spoiling? Was it a sause type that you had to keep in checkin bag? I was thinking of bringing some ingrediants and making it there. From what I have seen in markets, most vegetables look sick compared to what I am used to. They do have something resembling chili peppers, not sure what they are called there.
nooga,
If one lives by a $300 per month paycheck then one lives with the parents in a cramped apartment and lives on a diet that has a high percentage of vegetables.
There is one reason that £300 per month paycheck people do not eat out ..... because they can't afford it!
I had a friend that took crab legs over to cook for his lady. He packed them in dry ice and a couple layers of zip locks and then put them in the middle of his clothes. That would probably be as good insulation as you could get. But I think she dumped him anyhow :-))).
That is funny Martin. I never thought about that was the reason.
Nooga I did not know what Arkadia was so I googled it. Thats for women isnt it. http://www.myarkadia.com What are you going to do with that you dont have any women.
Oh my I never thought about it until now you do have a friend there with you dont you.
:))))))))))
Oz....he means Arcadia..spelt different ways...the summer hot spot with plenty of nightclubs....a place where nooga can spend plenty of his funds....noggie check out Ibisa/Itaca, 2 biggest and crowded.
I prefer Cosmos...for music and dancin...but very young!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :))
If you stay in center noggie...go to Arena...there is a strip club downstairs...maybe that will be only place you will see pink......and get red!!!:))
arkadia was strugglin last night, either that or we left too early, 1am... I think it was a rather quiet night. Still having fun here, it's interesting to see how these people live. AND THE FOOD HERE IS ALWAYS SO WELL PRESENTED AND SO TASTY. CANNOT COMPLAIN THERE!
The salsa I took was the type one finds in a jar. Not as good, to be sure, as fresh homemade salsa - but its a local brand (yes we have local slasa makers in Wisconsin) and not too bad.
