How r u Ben?? Be in your part in early October. Since I like to cook breakfast when I am in FSU, I always find a market to buy my groceries. First time in Ukraine, I bought my veggies,potoes, bell peppers, tomatoes, fruit, oil, juice, eggs...easy because you can see it. Now I need butter, went to right section but could not figure out which one was right, tried looking at pictures, saw a cow, figured not right, saw something that looked like spreading, so I figured that was right, when I got back to apt and I found out it was cream cheese, yuk.....went back, bought two others that looked like it would be butter and when I got back....one was cottage cheese and the other was margerine......now when I go back, I have list of words in russian of things that I want to buy so I can get correct item. ben2006 Member send PM   block PM add to buddies Send: 8/16/2008 11:42:24 AM   It means alcohol free beer. It was about 8 AM and not to many people there. There were a couple ladies stocking shelves and I found a little bit of what I wanted and then showed my list to one of the ladies. She led me all around the store filling my list but there were two items we decided were not there (I was making chile and some oatmeal cookies, so there were some spices on the list that could have not been translated right). I was checking out and she found one of the two items and came running yelling to check out counter with it. Moments like that are priceless. But I still have to watch the water close. The worst thing is that a lot of the brands of bottled water have the name brand in the big letters instead of the kind of water. I could sound out word and the first time my lady had helped me buy groceries and she got water with gas and I did not even know there was such a nasty tasting water until at home I tasted it. The next time I went to the supermarket before she had come over in the morning and I understood Mineral on the label and again being naive and thinking that was natural ground water bought it. If you know Dnepropetrovsk the supermarket was in the center and my apartment was half way up the big hill on Karl Marks about a miles walk with a bag of groceries and I was on the 15th floor. I got to the building, the elevator was down just at that moment, I climbed the 15 flights of stairs. I set the groceries down and was going to have a big drink of water. What a rude awakening nastiest tasting water I ever tried to drink. I think I started drinking tap water that day. The third time I stayed in that apartment I realized there was a market right across the street from the apartment. I would like to introduce my friends restaurant to 'salsa' for their 'burritos'( tortillas with chicken and fillings), I think that would add a spicy taste, not sure how expensive it will be or if they can get ingrediants. Member send PM   block PM add to buddies Send: 8/18/2008 9:26:29 AM   beemer: My lady developed a taste for Macho Nacho's at the "Last Chance Retaurant" (which actually promotes itself as an English Pub) at the Yalta Intourist Hotel. Unfortunately said restaurant did not offer the dish this year. It DID offer the "Big Ben" Hamburger - which, by the way, was the WORST tasting hamburger I have ever had in my life. It was brought to the room by room service and had the most rancid nasty taste you can imagine. Last year the food in this particular restaurant (The Last Chance) was much better than this year. I brought hot salsa and nacho cheese sauce to her in January. I also brought corn chps which we warmed up and made my own version of Macho Nachos - without beef though. They were spicy. Was it a sause type that you had to keep in checkin bag? I was thinking of bringing some ingrediants and making it there. From what I have seen in markets, most vegetables look sick compared to what I am used to. They do have something resembling chili peppers, not sure what they are called there. There is one reason that £300 per month paycheck people do not eat out ..... because they can't afford it! He packed them in dry ice and a couple layers of zip locks and then put them in the middle of his clothes. That would probably be as good insulation as you could get. Not as good, to be sure, as fresh homemade salsa - but its a local brand (yes we have local slasa makers in Wisconsin) and not too bad.
