Taxi for example is pronounced tahk-See the emphasis on the see. The spelling Такси is a little confusing. Or the word you is spelled in Russian Вы and sounds like vwee which is the plural form. Interesting language, difficult but fun to learn. Hell I feel sorry for the ladies learning English and if they come here find out that our language is ambiguous in it's own way. If you know that, you will have a little bit of an edge, otherwise, just learn Cyrillic. It should not take more than a day. As Mike states, most modern words in Russians are derivatives of other foreign words. Yes, you want recognize it looking at the word, but as soon as you pronounce it, you will recognize it. But it is something that is necessary as you will need to go to Russia at some point to meet the woman. Better to go with some Russian than no Russian. Don't waste your time if you are not going to follow through with it. And don't think that it will be better to learn at your local schools and university. You can learn faster on your own. Formal lessons in a college or something will only suppliment you own work.You can learn the alphabet in a day or two on your own.
