QuietCharm, normal people work so hard that they have no time and wish to watch TV. Or like my parents, who watch news or a film in the evening, on our channels, on some ukrainian channels, there are commercials inside the film. And usually such channels show good films. And if there is a commercial they either go to have tea, or switch the channel.
Junk food is not advertised. Or it has a very little percentage in commercials. But have to admit that a commercial, once seen, helped me to find a very good shampoo for my hair:) And the shampoo is really great!:)
QC:
if you read my post properly I said that normal people do not take the ads seriously........NOT that they don't advertise!!!.
I agree that the ads inform.......but they certainly do not brainwash anybody except the weak willed to buy what they portray.Choice is everywhere, and marketing through the media,be that TV radio or even the web is a very easy way to reach a lot of people, when those same people get that information it's up to them what they do with it.
Surely you don't believe that the McD's you ate was "real" food do you?
TV, whether it be via formal programming or commercial ads DOES exert influence on the minds of people, particularly the young, who are not experienced in life to know the difference between fiction from marketing and reality.
The minds of youngsters ages 12-22 are, like Bill Cosby said, "brain damaged from the day they enter puberty until the time they graduate from college".
That particular temporary mental condition is what makes them vulnerable to pernicious and habit forming conditioning at the hands of TV programming and commercials.
toad:
I agree with that....of course the young are vulnerable to the influences you mention, and perhaps I should have made my point more clearly. What I was/am trying to say is that by our age we are not conned by all the BS they spout off.
BTW...smiles at the Bill Cosby quote....brilliant guy!
Drag,
By their very nature all young, undeveloped, untrained and still 'cooking' minds are weak willed...all of them eager for influence.
THAT's what makes them fertile ground for anything or anyone to lead them
Toad, bull shit. In australia young people are realy speaking out about social and ecological topics now. Young and smart do exist and old and dumb do also, just look around hear. TV has and can infuience people in a bad way but it can also be a great way to inform people of what is going on. There is good and bad media and we can choose to liten to what we like. For example I listen to radio jjj in Australia because 1. great music and 2, informitive on all world issues without the media tycon bull. My choice. We all have it
ID,
I don't know how things are in Australia with young people. I've not been there...yet. (Still waiting for an invite from you to watch you wrestle 'croinky' crocs)
But I stick to my opinion about young minds....yes, you will always find those groups of youngsters who excel or speak out in defense of the environment or other worthy causes.
But generally, western young minds are fertile ground for TV and other outside influences that we, as grown parents, educators or concerned adults would not regard as positive.
there are week of mind in all ages. Even some older people are still easily infuence by TV ads. On some people they do not work, on other thewy do, regardless of age. I am writeing to a young girl now toad and she is the most sensable I have corresponded with yet. Stick to your old stagnent ideas if you wish. Of coarse people grow but a young week mind usualy ends up and old week mind. It not just up to age, personalities last a life time
ID,
considering the young minds "fertile ground" for marketing ads does not mean they're weak in my book. Only that their lack of life experience makes them easier to influence with it.
That's all.
ID:
I agree,
young weak minds DO tend to mature into older weak minds, and although toad has a point about our surroundings influencing them, your statement about personalities lasting a life time is close enough to the bullseye for me.
Toad, marketing can be an infulence but hopefully so are real people, parents for example. Other older role modeals in young peoples lifes. I have 1 interesting statistic for you. Listen up wess, ststisics. People in Austrlia were conserned about fast food ads on tv making our children fat. They survayes some young people, i think maybe 8-16 year old and asked them there favourate foods. Spagetti bolinase was #1. Steah and potatoes #2, stir fry #3. I cannot remember what all the food were but not fast food was mentions untill #6 which was pizza I think follow by maccers and kfc. All that advertising you would think that McDonalds would be #1 but it was not. Aussies prefered good healthy homemade food. Do not remember seeing that ad that influeced tham
Only about the TV but we never disagreed on that one anyway. You win because all Americans are fools and eat McDonalds? then the victory is yours so revil in it. LOL
