I wasn't pricing the trip that I am taking in 16 days. I was looking at what they have to offer in two months. To be honest I have looked at many other sites and I always find the same thing....they want to route me into some strange cities with long layovers. I was able to do much better directly with Delta to Moscow and then buying my own ticket on Aeroflot from Moscow to Rostov (or to any other city if I wanted to go else where). My point is to always keep checking. Sometimes you can do better on your own. The $1000 difference still stands, however.
I have often wondered, however, what would happen if I arrived in Moscow and my bag didn't make a connection. Would Delta be able to get me my bag in Rostov especially if I was traveling on seperate airlines with seperate tickets? Would my bag be sitting in Sheremetyevo airport the whole time? I don't want to think about it but once I had only 35 minutes between planes in Atlanta. Some how the bag made the connection. Now I fly direct to NYC and avoid the quick connection in Atlanta.
Neonred: Wait a minute - you already have your ticket in hand - purchased at a discount over what SideStep quoted you - for a trip to start in 16 days?
You have to know that prices are EXTREMELY changeable durung the holiday season. They may celebrate Christmas later than we do but should it be surprising that a last minute holiday flight would be quoted higher than one plnned in advance?
If you are comparing a last minute quote to a well planned out one - its apples to oranges.
I can't promise that SideStep will ALWAYS come up with the best rates. In fact I know the guy who is (I believe) the ONLY officially authorized travel agent representative for Ait Moldova in the US who just founf me a flight at around $160 less than the equivalent listed on SideStep myself. But generally SideStep is VERY GOOD.
I have a friend who lives in Florida too and has a fiance in Odessa. He has tried everything to get a decent rate - eventually working through a New York travel agency and a Hungarian Airline - he still souldn't get a good price.
Side step found his a round trip rate of $700 - WAY LESS than anyhting he could find on his own. Sure, the flight had several connections and between his flight over and the return trip he would be on some six different airlines, but the price was still incredible.
For most out there - try SideStep and try it at different times - rates do change someimes A LOT even from day to day.
I just tried playing with sidestep and for a flight to Rostov they quoted me more than $1000 more than I came up with on my own! Already have my tickets and visa in hand....leaving in 16 days.
Why the hell am I going NOW??...rotten weather. Well, I haven't lived in snow for 17 years so this will remind me why I moved to Florida.
In Moldova I got a great deal - it was again at a "private hotel", but it was a beautiful place. Recently built, all marble floors, three rooms (including the bath room which had a bidet as well as a toilet), balcony ovrlooking a vry well kept private courtyard. Elaborate private breakfast (not a buffet by any means) served to us in bed by very professional staff, if requested.
Private sauna with indoor pool attached to the facilities. Ten dollars per hour for use of the sauna - but being with my goreous 24 year old - that alone was worth the entire price of the trip!!
Price? $54 per night. All inclusive.
I've just received word that we have reservations for the same place (we stayed there in April/May) in January again....
jmoluv: First of all - if there are two airports in Riga I am not aware of it. There seemed to be no question as to which I wanted to go to when I instructed my hotel to summon a taxi, nor was there any question asked by the taxi driver who drove me.
Second: I DO NOT recommend the hotel that I stayed at (and yes it was a hotel). it was the Hotel Skansia and it was some distance from Old Town. While it was withing walking distance (I walked from Old Town three times) I would not have done it at night.
Worse - they are buildind a large Hockey Arena right across the street with a completion date of sometime in 2006. While I was there two large pile drivers constantly drove huge concrete supports into the ground from 8:00 am to at least 6:00 pm six days a week.
In retrospect it seems difficult to explain why I stayed there the entire while. I chose it because it was a newly constucted "private hotel" and I seemed to have good results with that strategy in Moldova. But he address was confusing as taxi drivers continually had trouble finding it, as did one woman who drove and picked me up for a date. And I found out only while checking out that while I paid 24 Lats per night ($48 roughly) - everyone else seemed to have gotten a discount and was paying 16 Lats.
I commited myself to five days when checking in, and it took a few days to realize just how bad a deal it was. As my five days were nearing an end my thoughts were of flying to Moldova so I decided to finish out the week. Then I met my Latvian who "convinced" me to stay. And, well, it seemed to be too much hassle at that point to move.
In short - don't stay there. It was the worst hotel decsion I have made in my travels to the FSU.
Jetmba; Thanks for the "heads-up" on "sidestep.com."
I was impressed. I can get a round trip from New Orleans to Moscow for much less than $1000 and leave next Friday. (I'd have to do something about that visa though). I tend to make last minute decisions and I've paid as much as $2,800 for the same flight.
Two points of information for others......
1) Sidestep only works with Microsoft's Internet Explorer (wouldn't install on mozilla or firefox).
2) The prices for the "interior" Russian flights were quite high.
