I know it'll be cumbersome and inconvenient to take clothes for all the ocassions....Plane & train rides, two dinners with her mom (one at Mom's home), Woman's Day dinner at a trendy joint in Tyumen, at least 3-4 days of playing tourist visiting various interesting places, dinner with Izi and his lady in E-Burg, etc etc...
But this is the first of several trips I plan on making before August when the shit hits the fan and I'll have to work 14 hour days.
I can always leave a suit and sweaters there if we get past the first visit with high colors..:)
I'd get myself an anti-flu shot before I'd leave. One normally catches a cold due to a sudden change of climate, and a course of some multivitamins (high in C) may help also.
If you really want to wear something on your head against the cold, nothing wrong with a ski-hat, but even those (personally) I'm not too fond of.
Overthere I'd stay away from any fake fur, but any wool or acrylic is fine, just choose a zooty colour to go with your sporty coat. Then again, you guys are yankees - what's wrong with bringing a stetson or cricket hat? Wear it proudly instead of trying to blend away in fur?
Interesting that you mentioned a stetson (or a cowboy hat.)
I sent her a cowboy hat - a black leather one - originally I was going to wear it - but I decided not to pack it.
It arrived while I was in Moldova and she wore it outside. You could not believe how many compliments she got on it. I mean, she has a leather cap of sorts, like all the girls wear - but no one had ever seen a hat like this before and everyone asked her where she bought it and how much it cost. Even guys wanted one.
(Might just bring a few along next time and finace my TRIP that way.)
Toad - I am very curious about what it is that you do for a living. Someday I hope to figure it out. You've said before that are paid well enough with a very unique skill or profession - you seem to socialize with hospital administrators - and yet you work 14 hour days but only during the summer.
I've asked before. Toad's an organizer of personal investment portfolios if I remember correct, doing most himself now after having tried using 'reps' hence having ended up now with the pick of the crop (sorry mate) of his clients.
But eh, Amphib, I also wonder why your workload seems to peak seasonally? Taxyear-cyclic, or what?
Jet,
My main business is that of a financial planner, but I only work with clients who are retired or facinf it within the next few years.
This year I'm putting together a small family business with my 18 & 19 year old kids doing Holiday Lights sales & installations.
The set up period starts in late May with all the bidding for the accounts and overlaps in September when the actual installations begins. Then it ends in January with the decorations take down.
It's a seasonal biz, but it's highly profitable and something my kids can use to get their teeth into to get a taste of real life in the self employed world.
That's why I said that later this summer I'll be very busy.
OK, I was off there then, but wtf is "Holiday Lights"?
Except from curious always interested in 'new' things, and this sounds to me like something (except maybe fitting into my current line).
Pls give me a short breakdown?
Yes, Jet...
I'm not a fan of corporate america.
Being independent is a better fit for me.
TD,
The new biz will be selling and installing Holidays decoration to big upscale homes and businesses like car dealerships, hotels, strip malls, golf course, HOAs (home owner associations, etc. Even cities if we can land a few contracts with them.
Xmas, New Year, Halloween, Easter and 4th of July are all big times of the year.
Because the work is seasonal, and the worker's comp costs can be prohibitive, it does not lend support to establish a large year round operation. My competitors are ALL small outfits.
But the demand every year vastly outpaces the providers.
Residential clients do NOT want to be seen on the roof of their multimillion dollar homes by their snobbish wealthy neighbors while they install the lights.
And in many cases, they are just too old to do so.
Commercial clients do not want to risk their own employees getting hurt on the job by climbing the roofs or palm trees.
They rather contract the work out than risk seeing their workers comp. insurance rate raise through the roof (pun intended.)
I have wanted to do something like this since my kids were still on diapers over 18 years ago.
We'll see how it turns out.
All these thing and you have never meet, every tried taking your own advice.
Besides that, I have been to Russia 3 times as I have told you and never been asked about presents or anything. The first place in the country I landed was in Ekaterienburg and its realy not so tight. Kiev was a bit more of a hassel but they let me off the tax because I had some cash on me and the costoms officer was a female and rather friendly, she keep calling me mister LOL it was funny. It was surpose to be 45%tax on gifts. Like I said I had been to Ekaterienburg 3 times with no questions asked so Kiev was a surprise to me. Just something to note. If on the other hand you buy something you like, for example a painting, you need to get a certificate for the police to get it out. I had a painting in my siutcase and when I was filling the form out I asked the women from the agency about it (we were at the airport) and she said I needed a certificate. It asks about art on the exit form. Anyway I said nothing and it was about the size of my siutcase so under X-ray it looked like some lines around the outside of my suitcase like the frame as it was such a good fit. The guy before me had to empty his suitcase but I got through with no certificate and no hassels. As more than class on that one
Personally I think it is better to bring gifts on the second meeting... May be some small gift for the lady, but not for the family on the first meeting. I think the family in some cases will feel this kind of strange... But.. I don't know for sure.. Have never had presents for the first meeting.. only flowers for the girl.. And it have been successful for me...
our cultures differ vastly. HOME decorations? A tree maybe, mostly inside but outside is normal also. Whole towns do compete with their lights for 'the best' but this they do themselves, by their municipal workers.
Pity, I was hoping for something maybe of use here. Nothing wrong with reinventing the wheel, but this one will not turn here.
but spending up so big toad. It seems you have caught the last miute ecitment bug just as everyone dose and are not realy keeping calm about it. Maybe you have chosen well and it will all be good, but if not, its a lot of money. Maybe you can afford it but you never struck me as the kind of person to waste money
A friend and I are going to Vitebsk the first part of March to see our ladies. I've Been over several times on buisness and the subject of gifts foe the family is all in being subtil. Go buy some scarves or something like that. It is not so much the value of the gift but the thought behind it. These people are very intamit remember that inside they are poets and lovers so be low key.
