Hell Toad who knows maybe I will Retire in Ukraine, one never knows!
Toad I bust you from being from Cali, but you're probably a very good
Planner. What disturbs me the most, is people thinks it takes a lot of money to start to acquire wealth and a good sound financial package for retirement. I am far from any expert and would not tell someone in the profession what it's all about. For me it was to establish a discipline to save and invest. In my early years in my 401k I only contributed 2% of my wages because I really couldn't afford much more at that time. Now I contribute 15% because that is the max my company will match dollar for dollar annually and I really don't need that for my living expenses. It always doesn't pay out, but in the long haul I've done pretty well. The money does add up if you use a level headed approach in your investing. My ex tried her very best to get half of it. I told her if that was the case then all the properties and the home that she idolized so much would go up for sale and we would split 50% of everything.I remember her mouthpiece leaning over to her and saying, you're way ahead of the game, give it up. Now I do need to see a financial advisor because I deal in a cash business on the side and I need to learn to protect my income from this. My annual income from my job varies from 40-50k a year some years it will go over 50K, but not often, that is why I've always looked to other avenues for income revenue. There are some smart people out there in the investment community, I'm not one of them. I've always tried to limit my expenses and grow income from various sources, i.e. 401k, real estate, second business. The reason I got involved in the vending business is that I know Larissa isn't going to jump directly into the working world and it will subsedize her until she does. Sounds kind of antiseptic, but that's the way I look at it. Then when she does explore her career options, which she has already said she wants to do. The money off the second business will be for our retirement and general goof off money. So I will keep the 401k the same, load the Roth to the max every year and invest in my mutual fund. I'm sure there are more creative ways to do this, but until I sit with a financial advisor after she arrives, I am a horrible novice at best, but still have been able to save a pretty decent sum of money and I will not worry if Socialist Security is there or not.
MIKE,
I dont totally agree with you on S.S.It`s concept was good but it went the other way. In reality most of the population is the working poor . Most employers only pay a wage just to sustain life and everything is going up up and even more up except your take home pay. It is hard to have extra money to invest when you need it to keep away the bill and tax collector. It may be easy for some but not for the most part for others . Good paying jobs are gone or they went overseas. This government dont give a flying fuck about the welfare of our economy and growth and keeping the work here. Walmart wages are here for a long long time.
jmoluv,
Necessity is the mother of invention.
There is still more opportunity here in this country to prosper than in the vast majority of other countries out there, including most of our other industrialized competitors.
It's all a matter of matching a grea vehicle (opportunity to prosper) with an equally great and determined driver (each one of us)
Ferraris are among the most powerful, prestigious F1 car races in the history or car racing, but you and I could not go around one lap in any race with that monster without killing ourselves.
They can put me on Secretariat, that noble beast of a horse race, let me out on the kentucky Derby and they'd still be looking to collect all of my bone fragments because my level of riding is limited to once every year or so on the back of some poor worn out equine on the beaches of mexico that can only gallop on the way back to the feeding trough.
There are many opportunities in this country, this economy and this system.
But that does not automatically mean anyone becomes qualified to turn it into a cash cow.
Why would you want the government to manage your future. You said it best already. Taxations is absurd. The working poor is going to be the working poor for one reason only. Lack of education and lack of discipline. You make think I'm full of shit, but the free money available to educate oneself is incredible. It just takes research. I did some and found out a little know fact in the state of Indiana by just making a few phone calls. My father received a purple heart in WWII. In Indiana children of purple heart receipiants get their tuition for free, as long as they attend a state school, IU Purdue etc. Well at 47 I'm thinking about going back to school from a Political science major to study mechanical engineering. I'm tired of professionally begging for money. Then I did some research on development grants for small businesses. I am in the process of attaining a $7500 grant for my vending business with the stipulation that I have one employee within the next two years. Fine with me, I wonder if she speaks Russian will she qualify? People who sit on their hands and do the same thing over and over the same way get the same results. Knowledge is the power. I tease Larissa alot, saying hell I just might move to Mariupol and start my own Marriage agency, at least it would have legitimacy. Hell a smart guy can make money in an economically disadvantaged country like Ukraine and stimulate the economy. The money is out there for everyone, you just have to have the stones and the knowledge to go find it. I've never been one to want my day job be my only source of income. Sometimes jobs leave you, so you have to have a backup plan. Funny in Ukraine they don't have much money, but the men sure as hell have it for Alcohol. So hard times don't mean a thing. You just have to readjust your mentality. As sad as it sounds people rely on perception. If you are in business and doing good, the perception is you have a clue.
Mike ,
Since we are on this subject i can thank our most famous President of all times Ronald Reagan who fucked me royally. I paid into social security for 23 years. I am now and have been a railroad engineer for a class one railroad for over ten years now so i get a very good pension and the woman who marries me also gets a railroad pension one half less than mine. And her pension will be double what social security will have paid her just because she is married to me.This is a good benefit to be married to a railroader. We both can collect this together when we both retire. So Ronny decided there will be no double dipping that fucking prick, and all that money i paid into S.S. and my future wife we will never see. But yet that bastard got three pensions , one from the actors guild , one from being a senator and one from being the President. But yet he fired all the air traffic controllers broke the unions backs and they named an airport after him. FOR THE PEOPLE BY THE PEOPLE , BULLSHIT
I couldn't resist this, sorry JMO, but you opened the door. I have spent many years on legislative study groups and double dipping wasn't just railroaders. It was any federal governed occupation which employees got the benefits of both. So please don't act like the railroad personnel got fucked alone. But this is even more interesting and this is documented and I can provide many places for what I am about to write. Something you left out of hammering President Reagan. Much of this can be found in the congressional record and through the OMB.
1.For railroad employees, who pay into the railroad fund rather than Social Security, the bill provides an increase in benefits for surviving spouses, lowering of the retirement age from 62 to 60, faster vesting and repeal of the limit on the maximum benefit.
The key word is rather. You have a choice so tell me which is better?
2.For railroad employers, the bill allows a reduction in payroll taxes
My company does not get this benefit. Why not?
3.But since there are now three beneficiaries for each worker, the pension fund is paying out more than it is taking in -- and the shortfall is being made up by funds from Social Security and general federal revenues.
Wow what a caveat, I am paying for your pension, but you are not contributing to this? Interesting. Taxypayer get's the shaft again. I mean you have a short fall so it is part of your old SS and my dollars paying for your pensions.
My company does not get this benefit. Why not?
4. If the current Railroad pension bill becomes law, it has already passed the house. The increased benefits will bankrupt the system. And the American taxypayers will be on the hook for billions to bail it out.!We will see how this story plays out.
What I have just wrote about is about 4 years old. My question would be why should a wife of a railroader have anything more that what John Q. Public's wife should have? Or lets say a Soldier or Sailor that is killed overseas in Iraq or Afghanistan? What do they get, A flag and 30000 dollars? Whoopee!
My hats off to Reagan breaking the unions backs, they screwed their constituents for years. Plus Unionism/Socialism/Communism. nothing more than a horse of a different color, but still with the same insidious thread, to make everyone equal no matter how much one person contributes more than the other. Now that's Bullshit my friend.
I was around to witness the millions of 5 dollar an hour jobs that Raygunomics created. Welfare payed about 7 per hour collectively at the time. He wasn`t even that good of an actor. Oh--and about breaking the unions-it does serve the employers of right-to work states like Arizona very well. Not only do they not have to offer benefits, they can fire you just because they do not like you. I can`t even live in my own homestate of Montana-because a non-union plumber makes between 8 and 15 dollars an hour---up to 22 if they are union. Reagan administration also vetoed wage legislation, and kept the federal minimun wage raises at about 15 cents per 3 years, starting when he was in office at about 3.15 an hour. I loved a more decent Carter, but his negotiation of the Iran hostages was also stolen by the mediocre actor because the release was like the day after the inauguration. What a buffoon. As Orwell said-all men are created equal, just some more equal.
Mike ,
I pay more into my pension plan than anyone does for their s.s. Therefore i reap the benefit. The unions are what standardized for the rest of the working country for a better workplace. People lost their lives on the picket lines for better wages and benefits . Do you think for one moment without the unionization of labor that the companies would have given you everything you have today ? You better think again my friend . They wouldn1t have given you a dime and you would still be working in deplorable conditions with peasant wages . I think you dont know the big picture about the railroad pension . The government wants our pension to bale out s.s. because it is floundering. They dont like it because it can stand on its own so they want a piece of it . I pay tier one and tier two deductions every week for me and my future wife so i dont know where you are coming off that the general public is taking care of me . Every few years some asshole tries to introduce some bill to join it with S.S. And it never gets passed. Another thing about lowering the age . Why should a railroad widower have to wait until she is 65 to receive her pension. What the fuck is she suppose to live on ? When her husband dies she does not get his check. And if she is younger why should she have to wait until she is 65 ? That was a good bill that they passed for that reason. Plus they finally lowered our service and age to retire to 30 years service and 60 years old. Before you had to reach 65 even if you had 45 years of service to get a full pension . Do you think being on a train crew is a picnic? I lost 23 years of S.S. to that fucking prick . Now you know the other side of the story. The wife of a railroader should have more than John Q Publics wife because i have paid into it for her , not you and the people who pay into S.S. That is why i chose my career by looking into the longrun (the big picture). If they ever try to steal our pension which we put the long hours in for and working on call 24/7 there will be blood on the tracks. Reagan broke what people died for and yet he triple dipped and they named an airport after the actor. Now that is bullshit my friend.
So does the man who pays into Social security but his wife has to wait and if she takes his, she doesn't get what she contributed. We will see how good a bill that was when the american public has to bail out the pension plan. As for being a picnic I never said it was, but try this on for size buddy, every month for the last 18 years of my life my income starts at zero each month and I earn every dime that goes in my pocket. I can't tell you how much I will make I have no guarantees. For those who don't like right to work states. All I can say is you vote with your dollars and your feet. As for unions, screw them all. I was forced into the teamsters union or I would lose my job if I didn't join. That's a beautiful concept. I will dig ditches myself before I will ever join a union. They threatened my wife and my daughter. So I drove to the picket line packing and said if the shit doesn't stop at my home I told the attorney he would be the first I shoot. They use fear and intimidation, doesn't work with me. The same people who died got screwed by the same unions they gave up their lives for. Unionism is socialism and is not needed in a free market society.
Mike,
The railroad is it`s own private entity but your Uncle Sam feels he has to meddle with this also. We make good wages and we have one of the best pensions around and no one contributes to it but the railroaders not the general public . We protect our own ass not the general publics.I dont think we are going to need to be bailed out . They simply raise our tier one and tier two deductions. Every month of the last 18 years of your life is a choice that YOU have made and that is your right. But on the other hand what if you did not have a work agreement in a non -union shop and per say you had 15 years of seniority and they laid you off and they kept the managers son who has only 5? I think you would be shooting more than your attorney.
First Spirit minimum wage isn't meant for a person to live 20 years on. If that is all a person thinks they are worth well so be it. The only time I had a minimum wage job was when I was in the Navy in the great Carter years!Let me tell you about the wonderful Mr. Carter. Ther where men e-3 and below with families that had to go on food stamps because the military pay sucked severely. Also there was an attempt to rescue the hostages but the military was so gutted that the equipment was not in a readiness condition and two of the planes crashed, killing a friend of mine that I went through boot camp with. Reagan just promised to use the firepower that was on Gonzo station to turn Iran into a parking lot if the hostages weren't released. As for union and non union plumbers, why work for someone if you have this marketable skill, I know a couple independent plumbers making more money than working in a union shop and filling their mutual funds and Roth Ira's without working for someone. Carter negotiated nothing with the hostages, that's pure bunk! I was there sat in the straits of Hormuz for over 9 months and we all were wondering when the hell are we going to do something? The problem with our social security and health care is everyone thinks they are entitled to these benefits, that's a bunch of crap. You earn them just as you do your paycheck. Entitlements were a creation of Roosevelts RAW deal administration and it's nothing more than a way to buy votes from people.
Also right to work states issue. Hell if your boss fires you because he doesn't like you, you still can have your day in court. The EEOC will glady take your grievance to a hearing. Also JMO that is why I don't solely rely on my "normal job" as my only source of income. Hell jobs leave, look what is happening to Generous Motors now. Years of pilfering by the UAW has almost bankrupted the largest auto manufacturer in the US. Funny, Toyota is building another Facility outside of Georgetown Kentucky and their growth is good and their workers get paid comparable to US auto manufacturers. Funny thing, they aren't unionized. Is this just a fluke?
Toad Subsidies and Tariffs is another thing that drives me nuts. All they are is taxation on the consumer. I'm giving up on this thread now, or I will just start hammering away. Though I miss this spirited engagement, but the party I supported for years now squats to piss because the are more worried about their image with the liberal media.
Only Amtrak is Toad. For some reason they feel a passenger system is still vital to national security. Amtrak would shut down in one day if the government would quit subsidizing it. People do not use Amtrak very much . Its operating costs is well beyond their revenue. The government actually pays my carrier so they can run on my tracks and everyone elses. When Amtrak runs around me when i am held at a stop signal there are practically no passengers on board. They are used heavily on the northeast corridor and i think on the west coast also. They are not reasonably priced to travel with and a good percentage of their customers are rail buffs . Besides Toad you can fly much faster for not that much money and people in the USA have a love affair with their cars unless you are a city dweller and use public transportation. Now all your major railroads and your smaller shortlines are booming . They are having a hard time keeping crews rested to operate trains because the volume of traffic is tremendous. Freight carriers have been completely out of the red for about a good 15 years now and operating with no subsidies at all and they are hiring all the time and there is a huge amount of jobs in attrition and retirement. You can earn close to 6 digits if you want to . Not bad for a high school education. Plus the best health benefits and two pensions for you and your spouse. No one contributes but the railroaders to our pension but yes the publics taxes help keep Amtrak afloat and in all due respect to their jobs Amtrak is not needed vital to national security and should be shut down .
You have to have a minimum wage law. If you weren't increasing base bay, how would you keep attention away from the actions of the Fed destabalizing the value of the dollar in the first place? ;-)
Unfortunately, those who make minimum wage don’t understand the concept of money much less inflation. I was having a conversation with a friend of mine the other day who is hating work lately because she only makes 8 dollars an hour and they just hired someone for 8.25 who does a different, yet equally as menial duties as herself. I told her that her last raise was for a quarter and that she seems to give a lot of effort, at least emotionally over quarters lately. The jest of the story was that I suggested that she go back to college, which upon graduation would double her income, most likely triple. She said that would take to long, at which time I replied that otherwise in four years at her current raise rate she will be making 9 dollars and probably seeing someone else new being hired for 9.25. She replied that college takes money, but as Nas pointed out that there are plenty of grants out there for “free” college. Hell, I have known people who actually make money from going to college, not much, but some. For those who are still reading, she still isn’t in college. Which is why I say some people deserve small wages.
