Man this is strange to hear. I didn't have a problem exchanging money in Kiev at all. In Mariupol Larissa has a friend that owns a shop there and she exchanged money for me, at a higher rate than I could get at the currency exchange. Maybe she is gambling the the US buck will get stronger.
As I said, not the same here in Kiev as it was Moscow - SPB last year.
What rate were you getting Mariupol, 5.11 is the best I have got here. Mind you, it would depend when are you talking about.
Last year was terrible, any slight mark and they would reject it. Had a huge argument with Hotel staff in Kharkov - Ukraine over $$ notes. I lost that argument too !!!!
Max the last time in Mariupol was March of this year. The exchange rate was a little higher than now, at the currency exchange they were paying out 5.34 Hryvnia to the dollar. Larissa's friend was giving me 5.90, not anything great but better than the exchange. The only hassle I had last time was with Passport control and customs coming in. I usually carried about $100 USD in cash along with the Hryvnia.

Where did you enter Ukraine - Kiev ??? What hassel did you have with Passport and customs ?? Was it over money ????
That exchange you obtained through your lady was a great deal and bonus to you.
No it wasn't about money because I declared that before I went into customs. The guy a passport control was being an asshole, saying my documentation was not correct. Then when they asked me why I was there I said to visit my Fiance, then they asked if I had any gifts which I said no and they went through my luggage three times. Larissa had to wait an 1:15 minutes after my plane landed before I got to her!
I entered in Kiev.
Biggest single hassle I had when entering or exiting an FSU country (eight times altogether) was as I was leaving Chisinau for the first time. I felt my lady was being like a mother-hen when she continually asked me if I had this or if I had that. On leaving she asked me one more time "Do you have the document from the hotel saying where you stayed?" Of course I said "yes" - and I figured I really did have them in these somewhere - probably under a pile of dirty laundry. Otherwise I didn't have a clue as to where they were.
So of course some big burly Moldovan officer approached me and asked me for my hotel receipt. I thought the request was absurd - I mean if I had intended to sleep on the street or something - I had already DONE it. Its not as if I was about to. (That was my logic anyway.)
He motions for me to put my two suitcases and my carryon on the table. I have no clue as to which one they are in or even for sure that they are there. I'm thinking - how much can I spare for the bribe this guy obviously wants.
Suddenly someone else comes rushing up to him to ask a question - he appears alarmed and begins talking on his radio and trying to communicate with this guy (I don't even know what language.) When he had ignored me for a time - perhaps 4 seconds or so - I reasoned that he really wasn't all that interested in my hotel receipt. So I quietly scurried away - feeling very much like I had just gotten away with something.
I don't advise anyone else try that and as far as being a deviant I admit my deed was rather small and insignificant. But hey... it worked.
I am planning on taking about 900 bucks to Ukraine, because I heard you have to declare anything over $1000. My plane leaves the states this Thursday. My plan was to pay for my apartment $50 for 8 days = $400 dollars when I get there. Then the rest of the money for whatever. Should I not take so much and plan on using credit cards? Or should I exchange to Hvernas as I go? This whole thing about them rejecting good dollars just cause they are wrinkles is rather dumb to me and will probably piss me off.
Can I go to a bank with my credit card and get Hvernas? Or will they give me dollars and then I have to exchange them? What about an ATM card? Will the banks treat it like a credit card? I have both, ATM and credit cards. I just wondering what is easier.
What about customs. I land in Kiev then take a puddle jumper to Dnepro. Do I go through customs in Kiev or Dnepro? Also I am taking a $300 pendant to my lady. I plan to give it to her if everything goes well towards the later part of my visit. In another thread someone gave me the advice just to hide it and proceed through. But I am chicken to do that. If I declared it how much will it cost me?
When they ask WHY you visiting Ukraine DO NOT say to visit your girl or Fiancée. I say to tour the beautiful site (lick lick)

I arrived Kiev 2nd June with $5,000. Declared $3,000. Should have declared nothing.
The Red line chap said don’t bother coming through here go to Green line. So I go to Green line with a declaration paper (you fill this out after Passport check and before customs check) The Green line man say , no go through Red line. So I goes through red line. He shake his head and say, show me $3000. I had the $5000 split just encase of this so showed him the $3K.
No problem after that, mind you I had Miss Ukraine up my arse so I think the Custom boys were a little side tracked on trivial matters.
