I lived more than 5 year in that shit and they didnt improve nothing!Riches are rich and poors are poor.BEFORE and AFTER the REVOLUTION.who ever says that it is getting better and better every day1-his or her parents are ass kissers.Go and ask people in the street.Ask a doctor if he can afford to buy meat.Ask a professor from any university(i dont men that one who do some tricks)how much he earns.Go and see the high prices! but the low incomes and VERY bad living standards.Go and see what a woman do with you just for a bottle of vodka. These are the facts!
Jet, you miss it. It is a loan. In general one should have a clear idea about this country.
Ukraine is much more progressive than my Belarus. The standards of economics are much European like. All the modern processes and opportunities are present there. it is hard to call that country a damp like for example Moldova.
Whatever one may want - he may get there: top quality living, relaxation and so on. OF COURSE for money. Where did you see it in any other way? That eela_nikolaeva is the sort of people I can't stand. They are soaken with communistic ideas about equality and brotherhood. For them a revolution is - to take everything from the rich and to give it to the poor like them. Lumpens...
Yes the gap between the rich and the poor is great there but it is legal, it is normal although very depressing to see. Having more than most people in my country almost automatically makes you an outlaw. This is why in Belarus the standard of living is the best from all the FSU countries but the ammount of really rich people is quite small.
I love democracy, I love business rules and the word "opportunity". I don't want to sit on my ass depending on the government.
And this is not because I am now doing quite well. No I had times when I had to live on 1-2$ a day. But even then I knew that Soviet Union won't return and I was happy that it wouldn't.
Again, there are trumps in every country, the ammount of beggars is not a sign of anything. In NY I guess there are more trumps than in all Belarus. Jet, have you ever had an idea how many Americans can not afford medical insurance and what is the gap between the rich and the poor in the states. You guys should know it better and I don't want to teach Americans about America but I am sure that if we take this percentage it will be quite similar in the two "U"-letter countries .
felicedate: Don't get me started on health care insurance in the US. The system we have stinks and it is UNIQUE in stinking the way it does, compared to any place else in the world. But this is a Russian Women forum - so I will refrain from a lengthy discussion on the shortcomings of the US healthcare system.
That said - I believe its still safe to say that there is a much WIDER gap between rich and poor in Ukraine than there is in the US. That can best be shown by the NUMBER of luxury cars on the road - the reson being that either you have no HOPE of owning a car or you can afford something like the 70k infinity your uncle bought.
The gap is huge in Ukraine. The Orange Revolution clearly did not solve it. Eventually something will solve it. Its only a matter of time.
I guess there is nothing to solve there. the world is developing according to the economics laws and that's all. You know, the revolution was just a way to change the group of people at power to let them be stealing what the previous group was stealing before. But that's not actually worth talking about. In every country those who are at power rip off benefits. It doesn't harm the country too much if it has good results in trade and prroduction. A wise governor understands that his own pocket will be thicker if the country he is ruling gets richer. I must say that very often this rule does not work (Iraq, Nth Korea, most African states) but if a country is more or less civilized, this works. In this respect for Ukrain the Orange revolution was nothing in comparisson with the crisis they ahve now. Those idiots at power can't decide between themselves quickly who is the hero of the day and who should take the second role while the enomics of the country is going to hell from I should admit very-very good positions.
Ok, lets stop about this and lets talk about... US medical insurance system!:-))) Just kidding...
Jet, I will never agree with you in one thing. You tell that if one has a luxury car it means several other people not having an opportunity to have a car. Sorry, aren't you the follower of Marx's ideas?;-) If a person has something - this means only that he is smart enough to have this something. If I eat measles for dinner(never tasted them by the way) it would be weird to suffer from the idea that somewhere African children don't have pure water to drink and most people in lets say Moldova regularly undereat. It was stated very long ago that there is no social equality in this life. Taking everything from one rich guy and giving it to 100 poor guys will result in having 101 poor guys. I believe that an average well-to-do person gains his prosperity from his own talents, forces, finally from his brain and his own risk in this world. If he doesn't undertake anything in this life - he won't get anything. For example a car. And he will sit on his prch looking at the passing Lexus telling "I am not having a ford because this thick-pocket has a lexus". Nonesence. People having big money are not thieves, the were just smart enough to add their part(very vital part) to the virtual commonth wealth and of course they sold this part for good money. They are producing some valuable products, giving many job places, paying taxes = providing social sphere with money. Don't these people deserve luxury cars?
You know my uncle was beginning as a car mechanics and had to live until 35 with his mother because he had no opportunity to purchase an apartment. When the SU collapsed he tried many things having income and having problems and debts. One year he was on the top and another year we had to send them food by post as it was ver hard to live. One year they rented a former army resort base and for several months were using it a a small hotelwhich gave them some starting capital. In one year he had a metal export company with more than 100 workers in it. In one more year he had nothing because of the powerful competitors and the corruption. He managed to get off the strong nock-out and now he has a big building company which is now in the process of building two big houses. Now I want to ask, whot did this person take from the dude sitting on his porch? May be only an enormous wish t live like a decent man, desire to work and quick brain. And one more thing, brave heart to bet everything one has on his own idea.
UH, Alex, I think you are missing it completely I hardly think Jet thinks economics is a zero sum game. Even a economics 101 student realizes that a capitalist country isn't a zero sum economy. Just because one has plenty doesn't mean anyone has less. Except in taxation and redistribution of wealth. Though the problem with many economies especially in Europe and it's beginning to invade the economy in the US is it is very Keynesian. When governments tinker with their economies, disaster is sure to develop. If you really look at America especially the last 20 years, the most powerful man wasn't any president, but Alan Greenspan, and one man to weild that much power is truly dangerous.
Ukraine is going to have growing problems, you just can't take a communist economy and make it a thriving capitalistic economy in little over a decade. Especially since the first regimes in most the the FSU countries after the fall of the Soviet Union were corrupt. I know everyone one in the Orange Revolution likes to Cheer for Yuschenko, but in reality he emerged and is a product from the Kuchma regime.
One of these days, I would like to see a side by side concrete comparison picture on local economies. ie: monthly rent for a 2 bedroom apt in a US city, cost for a comparable apt in Kiev, % of population who could afford it. Average income does not mean much by itself.
One way might be to go see for yourself. I always recall my earlier visits to Uzbekistan whereas an average wage is USD30 a month and a small bottle of beer costs USD1. Whenever anybody asks me I tell them the wage is a small bottle of beer a day!
