Don't rent a car, you'll get regularly stopped by roadside police waiting to collect their bribes.
Try this website, I use them regularly for my Ukrainian air travel and a damn site cheaper than online bookings with Aerosvit:

Some one asked me, on July 8, if it is safe to travel on such aircraft. The day previously those bastards had blown up the London Underground with many dead. It's safer to fly in Ukraine than travel on your own train network was my response!
I took a 6 hour Volvo 780 Limo Odessa to Zaporozhye, approx 500km for USD165.00. That was 1.75 years ago, fuel prices have made things mor expensive now but gives you a price indication.
6 hrs for $165. seems pretty cheap. Where'd you book the car, or will any limo service do the deed? What about your return? Same deal, or didn't you return?
Yes that is very good.
I had a car and driver thrown in with my tour price. The tour for 10 days was a helluva deal. If I had purchased the drive from Odessa and back from that particular agency it would have been about $180 (round trip). It all depends on who you are talking to, if you can speak any Russian etc. Martin knows a lot more people than me. That was my first trip to Kherson and in November I am taking the train. It is cheaper, more comfortable, and puts me exactly where I want to be. That is a great deal on the drive because it is about 175 km from Odessa to Kherson. All things are a rip unfortunately. When you are new to this you get taken over and over. Plus sometimes you do not really have a choice. As tiome goes by and you become more familiar with the system and language it gets easier. Martin has been at this for quite a few years. Also his lady is actually there and can help him. On your own it is a bitch.
Just for fun I checked Martin's weblink. I am familiar with that site. It was $72 one way from Kiev to Odessa (there is no airport in Kherson). Aerosvit was $80 just $8 more, not much of a difference.
It is the tax that kills you as can be seen below.
Fare $80.00 USD
Tax $36.68 USD
Total $116.68 USD
I was not able to go all the way through with Martin's link because they want a commitment. There will be taxes but how much they are asking I don't know. They are a bit expensive on the delivery charge though $45!
A round trip ticket with Aerosvit from Kiev to Odessa is approximately $200 including the taxes. If you add that to the car ride necessary it starts to get up there. I am taking a train /taxi from Kiev to Kherson. It is still a ripoff but it is much cheaper and puts me exactly where I want to be. In Kherson. The round trip taxi/train fare was total $174.
As opposed to $380.
If I do the train thing again I am not going to use any agency. There is a bus to the train station for about $2 and the round trip ticket is about $40. Big difference. I am working on my Russian and I am not confidant enough YET to do this without help but I am getting there :))
I was told by 2 different agencies that buying a 1st class train ticket on the spot is dodgy. They sell out and you need your passport.
My friend in Kharkov told me they lie. She said you can normally buy a 1st class ticket on the spot. It is true you need your passport but even that is possible to get around. I am waiting for her to tell me the details of how her Dutch boyfriend did this in advance without showing his passport. I will report this info back to the forum.
Starting to sound like I might be better off sticking to Kiev on the first round... since I speak NO Russian or Ukrainian what-so-ever.... Hey! Maybe Vanechka could show me around!
Only problem is I'd take about 17 seconds of his attitude and wind up choking him out with his own leg......
Looks to me like translators are readily available in Kiev & Odessa, & they're cheap!
$60 for 10 hours.... hell, I'm not driving to the end of my driveway for less than that, much less giving someone 10 hours of my day!
Martin;
That's a great site for internal flights! Looks like they're offering quite a bit besides flights. Might try a day adventure to Odessa just for the hell of it.... we'll se what happens when I get there. I haven't even booked an apartment in Kiev yet, just the flight to Kiev & St. Pete's, so I guess where to stay once I get there is first on the list....
Izi, this is exactly what this forum is for, sharing information between the serious members to help each other in our travels and search for true love. Thank you for sharing this vital information, it will not be useful for me as my lady is in Belarus but I am sure it will be for others.
Gentlemen and the few ladies on this forum, let's forget this Van aussie character and get back to sharing info to help each other and to help the newcomers.
Th prices on the site I mentioned include tax. I have always opted for the ticket delivery, of USD15, at the airport, that is USD15 for as many tickets as you like and not per ticket.
When I've arrived in Borispol a man has been waiting outside for me, with my name on a board, to personaly hand me the tickets.
Aerosvit carge something like USD100 per round trip in tax etc. alone. The tax per ticket is approx USD2, they are scamming you for he rest!
Why not get a direct international flight into Odessa on Austrian Airlines, MALEV Hungarian, LOT Polish etc. or even Aerosvit JFK-Odessa via Kiev but you pay one thru fare and not 2 individual fares.
Te guy in charge of that site is Dimitri, he can be a bit slow to respond to emails but he is 100% trustworthy and via the site you can get his mobile number.
Last time he met me to explain that the tickets were not ready, they would come in 30 minutes, this was in Borispol. I phoned my wife on my mobile for her to interpret that I'll go to the bar next to the domestic terminal and wait there.
This was a baking hot day in the middle of summer, it was sweltering, I kept inviting the guy into the bar (cafe) but he repeatedly and politely declined.
Eventually I bought and took a bottle of water to him outside, he thanks me sincerely and was ever so grateful.
There is no need to tip them and they do not expect it!
Martin;
As for International flight direct to Odessa, they wanted $1733. I got the Kiev & back leg of my journey for $918. USD. Seems like the internal flights would save a lot! I didn't intend on going to Odessa, but for under a hundred bucks each way it might be worth a look for a day or 2. The Kherson trip seems complicated without speaking the language or having a "Giude Dog". I'm not planning on coming back to apply for a K-1. My thinking is to make a trip, see a few sites, & get my bearings in a few places I've never been. If I make contact with a few ladies along the way, that'll be good too....
By the way: How do you say "Where's the bathroom" in Russian?
Phonetically if possible. I can't read russian either.....
Mindwire
I think you should skip Kherson you have enough on your plate. You will be spread so thin you won't know where you are in the end.
Martin
If that $72 is with the 'tax' I think it is a great deal. Yes I do think that Aerosvit is scamming. I agree with you.
In either Feb or Mar I am going again. Yet a different way :) I have $900 in a Delta credit so I am indeed going to go to Prague or Warsaw and I will buy a return ticket to Odessa. I will cough up for the dodgem ride to Kherson. After that particular trip I don't know what I am going to do. I shall be out of resources at that point and will have to carefully think out my next move. Too far ahead to predict.
Sailor
You are of course right. This turkey will wobble away eventually they always do - until the next one disrupts everything!!
To a policeman at Dnepropetrovsk airport recently I stood there with crossed legs, he understood exactly what I needed and pointed me in the right direction!
If you fancy a trip to Zaporozhye then I have friends that can show you around and perhaps introduce you to some ladies, they run a dating agency and my wife interprets and translates, I'm there myself 03-13 November!
