Thank you I'm flattered :) I actually made a mistake "(c) copy of affidavit of intent to get married", fiancee already have this in the copies of all documents submitted to INS. Instead (c) should be: copies of phone bills since the date application was submitted to INS (to prove relationship continued during the months of the wait).
wtrav hired lawyer which is probably the smartest way to do this since if you make a mistake your application is returned and they do not tell you where your mistake is...it could be some very small detail. I completed application myself submitted it in May... and I am still waiting on visa... wtrav when did you submit applic...last spring? anyway he's already got visa approval... I have yet to find out how succesful I'll be...I lawyer may be best way to go???

Jerome, the wait time depends on which INS office handles your application, which in turn depends on where you live. There are four INS offices: Vermont is the fastest and they run 1-2 month approval lead time currently, Texas is the slowest and are on 6+ months now, Nebraska and California are on 5-6 months. The following link gives you a good way to monitor the expected lead time based on where and when you filed you application:
I filed my application on January 16 and it got approved in exactly 5 months. Then there was a delay due to the short breakup with my fiancee and the fact that she mailed me back all the documents. This caused about a month delay.
There is a form that you can file and an additional fee that you pay to expedite the transfer of your case from INS-NVC to the embassy. If you do this, then your lead time between INS approval and interview is about 6-7 weeks. This is the case if the girl is from Ukraine.
I understand that your girl is from Russia. If this is the case there is an additional 2-3 month lead time between INS approval and embassy interview. This is caused by the fact that Russia is in the State Department's "black" list of countries that assist terrorist nations. As a result, the background checks are not run by the embassy in Moscow, but instead from Washington D.C. This results in 2-3 months additional time (incompatible systems).
An attorney is a good idea if you're willing to pay additional $1,500 (in addition to about $500 in government fees that you pay anyway). They "guarantee" INS approval, guide you through the process, and help with answering questions during the process and prior to the interview. For me the most important part was that I didn't have to do anything about filling out all those forms which is time consuming and can drive you nuts.
Thanks wtrav for all post INS visa approval info...I would appreciate any other input/advice in future from this stage of process, interview, arriving in USA with fiance, adjusting to US, after marriage, adjustment of status ...thanks in advance!
Regarding the womens reticence; it may be to avoid exploiting the situation. She doesn't want to make decisions because if she did she might as well make the most of it, and it would feel like taking advantage of you.
But there is another anecdote; American Astronaut on the Mir, with two Russian Astronauts. When dinner was served, he wait, be polite, for the service to be conducted like it is in America. After a few meals, he would find this was not the case. He asked one of the Astronauts why he was being treated so rudely at dinner.
"Brian!" Yuri says, "...we were just wondering why you weren't joining in!?"
Which seems to say that Russians dont have the Anglo-Saxon/Victorian 'polite restraint', that one just joins in, considers oneself part, not an individual representing 'society' or 'good manners'.
My experience is similar, don't ask if she wants a coke, just buy it for her, and it is the same with most things, take the decisions, she will always let you know her opinions
"If this is said about a coke, is burgers and fries a gourmet meal?"
It is if your monthly salary is $50 and you go to Micky D`s and pay $5 for a burger and fries !!!!
If you have not been there, then Please dont try to understand the financial intricacy because you really have No concept unless you have actually seen it with your own eyes !!
Hey, how about another analogy within his perspective...
You have a set budget on a trip to Europe, and for some unknown stupid reason beyond any human comprehension, you decide to go to Mcdonalds at the Piazza Di Spania in Rome. (I'm cringing right now). In this McDonalds are all the comfort foods from home, (plus they sell beer). You go to the counter, order your usual fair and you get the bill... paying $20cdn for what you could get for less than $5cdn at home.
Now it's not a gourmet meal to your standards, or even to that of a dung beetle, but it is a pricy item nonetheless, something that you would only try once and a while when cash isn't so tight... not quite unlike treating yourself to a luxury.
On the flip side, I am shocked, nay, appauled at the flourishing fast food market in europe. What the hell?!?! Get it out! It has done nothing but wreak havoc over hear in North America! We're all fat and pimply from that crap! No, no, no!
Europe is such a wonderful continent, why would you want to ruin it with places that sell hydrogenated wood chips on bread? It kinda clashes no?
nail on the head, are we exporting crap to Russia to make them fat and lardy arsed as well, must be a western womans game plan, rather than raising their own game to the standards of fsu women
I can understand North America, I mean, is there really such a thing as American Food other than fast food? There is absolutely no such convention in the culinary world for 'Canadian Food'. And I tell ya, Prarie Oysters aren't my thing.
The Canadian Diet is available worldwide at your local pub. Just read the menu under
'On Tap'.
