Unless you are planning on making an actual investment - what's the point in carrying ridiculous amounts of cash?
ATMs are available everywhere for spending money. Your room can EASILY be charged to your credit card.
I make reference to carrying a large amount of cash (above) when I was robbed. That was during my second trip when I had yet to discover the convenience of ATMs. Just like I/O, now I never carry more than a small amount of cash on me - usually less than $100.
No need to carry 3000EU (equivalent to some $4,500) and make yourself a target to anyone who knows.
You are right jet,
All my posts should come with a caveat "Dont do as I do"..))
My business earns a certain amount of cash and so holidays are a good way to spend some of it. If I dont do that, half goes to the government.
Taking cash with me, turned out rather lucky. When in Petersburg I lost wallet one night down town (dont ask, Too much vodka). The pending disaster was the loss of credit card in the wallet. It was Easter weekend and major problems getting hold of the right people to stop the card. Loose a credit card in my country and they will rack up $8000 on it over the weekend. It seems the Russians are not yet quite so quick and nothing was billed to the card.
The plan was to fly from Pete to Volg after the weekend. If I didnt have the cash with me to buy tickets etc, we would have been walking and hungry. I dont know what I would have done.
Next time I will be leaving the credit card at home. They are dangerous.
When I was robbed in Latvia (also too much vodka) I managed to lose a single credit card. I opened my wallet for him to get the money, but pinched firmly to the wallet itself, in the hope that I would be able to retain the credit cards in the one half. He ripped/cut the wallet cleanly taking half of it with him, along with my csh and the single credit card.
I used the internet to look up the number the next day and put a hold on the card. INo charges had been placed on the card in my case either and to my knowledge - nobody ever tried to use it.
Considering your story - if I were you - I would STILL leave the cash at home, instead of the credit card - you lost the credit card with no ill effect. If you would have lost the cash - you KNOW someone would have used it.

I have had more problems going back through USA customs than going through Odessa, Manila or Prague. Never been to Russia though. Perhaps off topic, if you are from USA and you ever go to the Philippines or Thailand, leave the laptop unless you want USA customs to go through every video and picture you have saved on the hd.
TELL USA CUSTOMS GO TO HELL MATE dont put up with that crap -customs in AUSSIE tried to fine me on 1 article i argued for an hour -i won in the end just maggotts mate .
stand your ground fugg the do - wells .
Mike: For the record - I've only been beaten up ONCE in my life.
And that was only after eight or ten shots of vodka.
I earned belts in Kyokushinkai (Japanese Karate) and Tai Kwon Doe (Korean Karate) in college. Not a black belt in either art - but concentrated more on freestyle sparring, which I did quite well. I'm big enough to generally not be regarded as an easy mark.
Jet,
After at least 8-10 shots of vodka,...or what you remmeber....your were definately an easy mark. For all you knew
you could have been holding a fan belt!! haha
I felt at least five (wasn't really into counting that night) jolts to the head, from behind before it dawned on me that the "taxi driver" standing behind me might be punching me in the head. No pain was registering in my mind, just a perceived "jolt" to the head. I turned and looked at him to verify that he was, indeed, punching me in the head, as I unsuccessfully tried to duck his next blow. Stepping backward in the hope of getting into a defensive posture I tripped on the low curb and fell backward - face up.
He moved in to stomp on my head - so I raised my arm to shield my face. My arm took the blunt of his stomps.
Strangely - I remember nothing from any of my training to get me out of that particulat situation - even with a clearer head today.
I dont drink the vodka jetmamba matter of fact id be lucky have 30 beers a year - the vodka carachters dont get me --- ive never been attacked there but ive come close few times .
Iam heading into a brick wall trying to find out a few things in Aussie about certain things in russia - its a basterd of a joint aussie in that way - you seemingly cant find any answers to russian questions in aussie you might want to find out .
Why ? ive no idea but this country has got to know the absolute smallest about anything russian ,
giving me the shits totally -------i would bloody pay money to find out 3 or 4 things its no good me asking simple questions on hear ay hell id get chewed to death .
One thing for certain unless i can find out a few straight absolutely correct answers in the next two weeks iam seriously thinking giving everything up ay .
I found an electronic English-Russian dictionary for sale on eBay. Its made by "Brilliant" and was ONLY available from several Australian sellers. I found that odd - but I sent the $40 + $10 shipping for the thing.
It comes in - with all directions, warranty, everything but the box itself written entirely in Russian.
Its relatively useless to me. (Sure - I can spend a lot of time figuring it out. Or I can spend a little more to get one I can use immediately. I'll go with the second choice. I'm sending it to my Russian speaking lady in Ukraine in prparation for our next visit.)
Jet,
What are the odds that your girl in Ukraine will get your electronic dictionary?? I think maybe 25-1 odds she does get it. And 6-5 odds it comes back to you! And 1-15 odds you end up taking it with you when you visit Ukraine again. :)) What do you think?
Somebody has been spending too much time on the sports betting sites again...
But seriously, I'm preparing a parcel to send to my lady. And the odds are pretty good that I will slip it into the package. If its anything like my experience in sending things to Moldova - she'll likely get it - if I use one of the US Postal Services premium services.
Since I already TOlD her to expect it - the odds are PRETTY GOOD that it will be in the package.
(Now who do you like in the Shannon Briggs, Sultan Ibragimov fight for ONE version of the heavyweight title on June 2, 2007? Did you catch the odds on that one? Kind of funny that 3 of the 4 major heavyweight belts are held by fighter from the FSU. Briggs being the exception. But that may change after June 2).
jet,
My post had to do with a previous thread regarding shipping parcels to Ukraine. Sounded like things only sometimes went through. Almost like whatever you send, make sure it is not valuable, like cd's. I'll check on thread!
I do not follow fighting errrr boxing but if we are talking horse racing...I won in the Preakness, hit an exacta!
beemer - its true that a tax can be charged on a parcel over a certain value - the secret is, however that customs officials are notoriously BAD in knowing the real value of anything. This small electronic dictionary looks very much like a cheap personal organizer. In fact a cheap persoanl organizer was thrown in as a bonus and I can't tell the difference. My intention was to send BOTH to the lady - though, come to think of it, it would be best to do that WITHOUT the boxes as (no doubt) the writing on the box TELLS exactly what this item is. If you look at it - there is no way that you would guess it is worth $40. And if you use a service like EMS - it will be opened in front of the lady - which will prevent opportunistic customs people from taking it before she sees it.
If you CHOOSE to send a valuable item or two and its small - you can always hide it in another item. My exfiance's mother had a thing for Quaker Instant Oatmeal so whenever I sent a parcel I would send a variety pack. I sent a gold ring to my lady once. (It was small and for her birthday) and carefully pried open the cardboard flap on the bottom of the oatmeal box just enough to slip it in. No doubt she would have been taxed if they had found it - but they never did.
Jet - you sneaky b-stard - you !!!
I sent 5 x $100US notes hidden very well behind a laminated photo, along with immigration papers etc to my Samara lady back in 2003 - guess what- it wasn't there when it arrived - OR - was it ?????????
Didn't do our relationship much good - as I always had my doubts after that. I sent the package to the Agency in Samara - I actually think the manager got it ?????
