If you have planned a trip write to a few ladies saying you would like to meet. You may get some shoppers but you will save youself writing to those wanting lots of translation fees. Costaboy I have never had trouble meeting women in Kiev but mainly use the free local sites. Didn't have anything planned so I decided to go bowling. In lane next to me, a lovely young girl with terrific legs was throwing gutter bowls, next bowler was a girl with, lets say she could work at hooters. When we bowled at same time she always leaned forward to get her ball to make sure I noticed her. You know me i tried to look away( :)) As I bowled I noticed the guy in same lane dressed just like back home...levi's and shirt...struck up a conversation with him. He was from the states. Seemed like a really nice guy, we chated each time we bowled. Of course, the girl with the legs was the girl he came to see. After bowling my second best score (188) and a few piva's, I was off. I introdued myself to his party, took note of Ms Hooter girl, just in case I joined the group at a later time. I got guys number to stay in touch. It is nice to meet up with a guy that is on same path as you, exchange notes and stories. Have a date with the main reason I came to ukraine, wonder how it will turn out. One of main issues in writing letters to girls is what they will look like and if there is some kind of mutual interest. My biggest problem so far is to line up meetings that don't coincide with each other. Makes for some nights that you are alone. That is internet time and to be able to share some of my thoughts with you guys. These fly by nights say you can learn it in 90 days but I think two years will be necessary to get to a first grade child's level if you get that far. I guess if I wanted to read it. I would rather just speak it in convcrsational Russian, rather than structured learning. When I was in Latin America for two months? Didn't speak a word of it, but after the first month, I knew when a girl was talking about me and pretty much the important parts she was talking about when it referred to me. ;p Land of oz Member send PM   block PM add to buddies Send: 10/14/2007 9:11:11 AM   Yes if you were dumped into the culture with no translators they say you can learn the language in six months. If you use pimsluer (I put an mp3 enabled cd player in my car and learned as I drove) there are 90 lessons for one a day. I listened and interacted with each about 3 times. It stuck pretty good but I still went through the whole program 3 times after using each 3 times the first time I went through it. If you learned everything in the 90 lessons and wanted to say "Jack went up the hill" from what you had learned if you new the proper name of the person you are talking about you could say "Jack went" Up and hill are not in the course and the is not used in Russian. From what I have seen Pimsluer is the best start if you do not have a human teacher. You will need some written as all of the signs, train tickets, and maps are in Russian. A talking dictionary is also useful as well as a grammar book although after about 10 pages that thing would throw me out of it. But I did read the first 10 pages about 8 times. The next phase for me was Rosseta Stone. With 8,400 phrases it will teach you to be able to say about what you want to say in Russian. It does not stick as well as Pimsluer and the phrase is tied to a photo so you need the English version also or a dictionary to look up what the words mean the first time. You can do one of 210 lessons a day but you will not retain a lot of it. The first time through I looked up all of the words giving me Russian typing skills or compared them to my English version. After the first 210 days you will need to go back and learn each lesson that you hurried through the first time. I am half way through this. To understand them when they talk you and to progress from here I think you will have to be in their culture. The ladies I have met that know English want you to talk English because they want to learn more of the English Language so it is difficult to use the Russian Language with them. Good luck though and it can be done one day at a time. Below is what I found. This looks like it would be like the question of the chicken and the egg and which came first. other men in the company (no, not me, ever) would talk about finding a 'horizontal dictionary' to help them with whatever language they were studying. This, of course, meant finding a member of the fair sex, who would be willing to provide extensive language and other local knowledge, advice, and counsel about a new country and its most intimate customs They were ususally not monetary arrangements, but were a version of 'girl in every port' types of relationships. Well...my meeting with girl that I had hoped would continue went off well. We had nice dinner and spoke of many different things. It is interesting how girl would look in person. She had those beautiful deep blue eyes and different from pics but still very attractive. Spoke very good english, sounded like she had her life together and educated. I asked about another meeting but was met with a 'not sure', I'll let you know. Anything but yes answer, is a no. As we left I knew this was goodbye. After thinking, I remember why I had never set up a meeting with girl to last more than 3 days, now I had to make calls to set up other meetings. Next meeting was with tall blonde. When I saw her she was very pretty, tall and with 3-4 inch heels. I felt like I had to be on my toes!!!! We had nice conversations using our interpreter. I liked that she mentioned things we talked about in letters. Seemed very mature for early 20's. We set up a hopeful second meeting. She seems to be a busy girl. I wonder if the girls that see you every day are more of the shopper type. Had a couple open nights that I decided to walk and see life in semi-big city. I went shopping in stores to buy something for my daughter and speak with girls. One shop had a really beautiful girl, I decided to go in. I know enough russian to carry a small conversation. Girl was impressed with my russian, although my sounds are not always right. After a bit I had several girls helping me. Wow, I asked if beautiful girl would try on clothes to see how they look. She agreed and they looked great on her, I think anything would look good on her, hmmmmm, won't go there!!!! They laughed when I asked if girl comes with outfit.I wanted to ask her out to dinner but didn't know if she was in a relationship or not, wish my russian was better or she knew some english. I didn't proceed further, by the way, I did buy the outfit. I went to other shops and made small talk. I will remember Alla...... If anyone has ever been to shops, that is where all beautiful women are during the day, shop after shop after shop!!! My time ending is near, only advice is better you know language, better off you are. St Petts and Moscow are safer than Odessa or any other city in Ukraine, maybe Kiev is also easy. I do not have ladies line up, and think I will end alone. I better use what LandofOz advise. I enjoy reading about your trip as I have one planned next summer. In the past I have went with AFA on their tour (Saint Pete, Novgorod) and had a wonderful time meeting hundreds of ladies. I got married but now I'm divorcing a Russian lady (we are still friends). But anyhow, now I have around 15 ladies I'm communicating with (weekly) and hope to narrow them down to 7 or 8 before my trip. I have never gone to Ukraine by myself but reading about your excursions has given me courage to "go on my own" without AFA holding my hand. My ladies are spread out all over Ukraine and also one in Muldovea and one in Saratove, Russia. I plan on spending one full day with each and then travel to meet the next. After the trip and I return home I'll choose one lady to go visit for two or three weeks to see if I chose correctly. How does this plan sound to you? Has anyone else corresponded with several Ladies at one time and what did you tell them when they asked if you were coming to visit "them" only? Have several maybe a lot better, but in one day I dout I can choose the one I want. I think that spent two or three days will give you the chance to see her on a bad morning and see how bad she goes and in a good day and also appreciate that. I still will post my end of trip thoughts, I just got back home. For the 4th time each trip was different and NEVER as planned. I am getting really good at improvising along with russian language. You are similar to what I have been doing, I have approx 12-15 girls I write to and try to pick an area to go to along with a 'sister' city. I think you are TOO spread out. I had one trip to St Pete's, Crimea and Kiev and it was too much, never got situated. I know it is difficult to pick girls, I constantly waver but pick your top 3 and go from there. Hopefully they not not far from each other. Make sure you have several in each city and let them know you will be there for a few days. I have a question.....how do you choose a girl after only one day??? In that one day you will be like in a candy store, everything looks good!!!! OM.....last time I had a girl come from another city to odessa she was a shopper from Nikolaev. Where will girls stay??? I doubt very much with you, unlesss they come with interpreter or friend. Are they day trips only??? I think better to go visit them, that way you are in control, how long you stay and time spent with girl, don't get lazy!! Shoopers, well one will stay with me for the weekend and the other for three days and I will have three days left to go and visit the town around I do not have any other girl, or may just go back to Italy and go for week retreat into a nice village, If I go to Nikolaev what can see there, and I do you think is a nice place to be alone. I think the three days with each girl should be enough. If the one for Kherson is the one I like I will go to visit her same if is the one from Nikolaev. Hope your last trip went well. I respect your comments far more than most that I read on here. I am due to travel to Ukraine within the next few weeks and am finalising my arrangements. Your comment about a "shopper" coming to Odessa from Nikolaev is very relevant to me as I am visiting Odessa to see a girl from Nikolaev. I offered to travel to her town, but she said that she wanted to meet in Odessa instead. It is not what I would prefer as like you say, there are other additional costs such as where she will stay, how does she get there etc. She suggested she was going to use a taxi. If I had travelled there I would use a bus, I always use public transport in foreign countries as taxis are always a rip-off. You got any thoughts on this one? I am 50/50 as to push on with this one.
