This is something that you do not read on the sites but I have heard it before that in Ukrainian custom the man assumes responsibility for financial support for the lady at engagement. Actually there I understand is not much engagement period for couples so it begins when they are an official couple. Branded cosmetics in Ukraine cost circa $40-50 per item, a lady might earn $300 a month thus it doesn't take Einstein to figure that for a lady to wear branded cosmetics and designer clothes then there is more than likely a man supporting her. Of course many Ukrainian men cannot afford such support, my brother-in-law being a prime example, thus these guys are not likely to get the pick of the crop. Any western guy that wants to entice a lady away from a country such as Ukraine needs to realise that he needs to give her reason(s) to go for a western guy rather than a local guy and if he's not ready to financially support then he may as well stay at home. But there is no hard and fast rule, it's for each guy to decide for himself, perhaps the lady may ask or not ask but any of her friends with western guys will probably be supported and a lack of support may make her feel inferior and may lead her to question her relationship.
