You had better have a single smallish bag or be a back packer - or be prepared to sleep on top (literally) of your luggage. Its NOT "Easy Peasy" to ride a Ukrainian train (buy ticket and all) on your own. My Ukrainian lady (when we actually got there - always quite late) was often confused by the goings-on and SHE SPEAKS THE LANGUAGE! Ok fair enough, I guess we are very different then. I prefer the great satisfaction of completing a challenge AND saving money. If travelling alone, I dont mind what hardships I go through, its all part of the challenge of travelling. Different if you have a lady with you of course as you dont want to look cheap. Prior to travelling it is possible to find out the train numbers and times and then you know exactly what you are looking for when you arrive at the station and which train you want. Booth 42 at Kiev station is the one for tourists to go to and I have found they can be somewhat more helpful than the other bedlam encountered in there. I guess we are all different in our approaches eh. If you are staying at a hotel or apartment there is not much chance of booking in before 10 and mostly after 12 unless you pay an extra day. So either you have to find somewhere to hang about idly with your luggage or your girl has somewhere to take you. Best bet is catch a plane as its isnt much more expensive when you consider all factors! The train stations usually have a lock up where you can store your luggage for a dollar or two. I have used this when I wanted to check out of my apt at noon but train did not leave until night and when I came in on a train with a lady I met in Russia. We locked her luggage up and she went with me and saw me off at the airport, and spent time in Moscow, then returned to the station got her luggage and boarded the train home.
