Also - there is NO income tax in Ukraine or Moldova. There is a "value added tax" (sales tax) which is fairly sizeable - but not if you don't BUY anything substantial, of course.
Could YOU survive on a hundred dollars per month you had No mortagage payment, no car payment, rotating payments of any type. Minimal clothes purchases, 10 cent transportation to anywhere in the city (in Kiev anyway), no big charitable contrbutions or excessive spending of any kind.
It would be a squeeze - but it would be doable.
Americans save almost NOTHING. That means we manage to spend - or have the government take from us - nearly every penny we make (and ususally for useless things). A lot of people have nothing left at the end of the month or have, indeed, negative income (thats why they run to PayDay loan oplaces, and car title loan places).
I doubt there is airfare for you, I don't remember aerosvit flying from Khmelnitsy.....there is a reason jet
asked about train or bus tickets...which are normally bought at stations..when you are going.
Nice Guy...just looked at map....it is about 180 miles (3 1/2 hours)from kiev...why not a taxi??? Not clear if you are going to her city first??? or meeting in kiev first???
According to this, there IS an internal flight from Khmelnitsky-Kiev though the time table and cost are not given (see the cities listed in a middle paragraph). It further appears that these people can help you obtain and deliver such a ticket, for a fee of course. I'm not endorsing this site (and I don't even know if its still or ever was active) but I did find it. Might be useful to you.
Jet..out of curiosity, checked site, maybe something is off.
If there is such a real flight, I would think twice before I get on that plane.
5 Minutes into flight you start decending to land!!!!!!!! :))))
It would probably be a propeller plane but it may be good to check with your lady to make sure that is what she really wants. Trains are reliable for the most part. In Ukraine if a flight does not have enough passengers they may wait to fly until they do ie. cancel the flight for that day so you might also ask what the chances of this are. Also there is probably not a lot of flexibility in flight times maybe one flight a day or every two days so you might also want to check to make sure you can coordinate your two flights. Borispool airport is a distance from Kiev maybe 30 minutes but there is a bus that goes directly from the airport to the train station just walk out the front doors of the airport and to your right about 50 yards ahead the bus will be sitting. Keep a good hold on all of your things in the airport because taxi drivers will be coming at you from all sides trying to make a deal with you. They will take you to the train station for about 40 US the bus will cost you about 6 or 7. Ideally if your lady is to be your navigator you should have her there first and then she can help you arrange everything else.
Average salary in 2007 in Ukraine 1500 to 1800 Hyrvnia or about 300 to 375 usd a month at October 2007 according to Wikipedia and inflation runs at 16% per annum.
Kiev, Donetsk and Dnepropretovisk have the highest salaries.
Place such as Ternopil, only about 1200 Hyrvnia or lowest.
Beemer: I know. You mentioned earlier that its only 180 miles.
But - its only 197 miles from Green Bay to Chicago too - and I take that flight 6 or 8 times a YEAR! Its quite popular. No beverage or snack generally because its basically UP then DOWN.
Doctors earn very little in public hospitals, especially outside of Kiev. I'm a Ukrainian so trust me this is possible. About bribes - yes, it's true, some very good doctors do take big bribes but young doctors only usually get $1-$2 per patient MAXIMUM.
I am talking to a girl from Melitopol, Ukraine. She was telling me that she pays $150.00/Mo. for a regular apartment. Seems to me that that is very high base on the salaries of that regions. Am I wrong?
I am just trying to find out is she is laying. Any comments?
I immigrated from Ukraine 8 years ago and currently live in Canada, can offer some *insider* view :)
There is no such thing as well established middle class there, the spectrum of incomes is way wider than what you used to in western world. Besides, in post USSR countries people in their 20s-30s even theoretically can't buy any property unless they won a lottery or in some top paid IT (or alike) job, it means living with parents, hence no mortgage and hence different spending pattern and hence can afford a $200 cell phone.
Also, there is a different mentality about spending - there is proverb saying that American would buy an expensive suit (or the same cell phone, if you wish) only once he paid all the bills and necessities and has some extra cash on his account (or room in line of credit), Russian/Ukrainian/etc. would buy an expensive suit (or phone) as soon as he can, then will deal with necessities. That’s why girls look so much prettier there, they would first buy some pretty skirt to keep their status in society and then will save on food and transit. Hope it helps :)
mountain... talked to a girl recently about spending patterns, girl is from moldova. She tells me that they have no problem spending $600-$700 on a cell phone and girls in particular spending most of their money on clothing and makup. It is just their choice to spend money on this....they all live with parents anyway. Besides,I am sure there are plenty of western men sending $$$$ to please a girl. I still cannot figure where girls get their money from?????????????
I think your point helps a lot. Let me aks you if I may Mountaineer if is ok or customary for a lady to ask or hint that she needs some money and that she needs help with English lessons or any other needs. It seems to me that Ukraine ladies do not have any problem asking specially does one from small towns like Mariopol, Nikolaev, Kherson.
In the other hands the ladies from Russia seem a lot different. This is only my opinion and observation. I had met a lady from Saratov who was wonderful and she at the end told me not sure to move to US and we had more difference that we needed she was 14 years younger almost 15. The Ukraine ladies in the other hand do not mind to ask do not mind the age, and I think they are as pretty just more difficult to predict how truthfull they are.
As everywhere else, ladies there are very different, for some it would seem inappropriate to even mention $$ and some would feel only comfortable to ask for some, especially if they short on cash indeed and have to cover their expenses (dial-up/internet café fees, etc) .
Recently I found myself in the same boat and looking for someone in Ukraine to bring here… personally, I would refrain from ladies who bring the $$ subject way too early. To me it translates into no pride, low self esteem and consumer-type personality. A truly happy person, with an active life style doesn’t really need a financial aid to remain happy, regardless what the situation is.
But to be honest, if she makes $100/month and is barely making ends meet and knows her *boy friend* makes some 50 times more, it feels for her like some small donation would be peanuts for him but would make a LOT of difference to her, so it must be hard to resist from accepting some help. I would just make sure the money is way down on the bottom of the list of interests connecting you, and are needed as a *technical* help only (internet, Eng dictionary, etc.)
As for their choice on where to spend…. historically, everyone was supposed to be equal (socialism, all people are brothers and comrades – all that crap), no opportunity to buy a car or start small business, be successful, etc… roughly same wages, same apartments, same schools, only basic entertainment, no extra cash for luxuries or travel , total deficit… If you really want to differentiate yourself from the crowd of clone-like comrades, you just have to use some style in your appearance. Now, if you saved some money for 3 months and now can afford to buy one pair of jeans and a shirt, well, they rather be really good as you’ll have to stuck with them for a while, use them for going to work, going to dates, meeting with friends.
This fashion is partially European thing and partially is a Soviet legacy, one way or another it makes Slavic girls look even more beautiful than they naturally are :) I still can’t get used to the way local girls dress up – mainly from Wal-Mart, with no regards to the season, style or figure, brrrrr :)
My wife and I just returned from 2 weeks in and round kiev.I talked to a few people about the average wage there.I was told a teacher makes about 100.00 a month us,average sales person 50.00 and restaurant
worker 40.00.I have been to the Ukraine for a couple of weeks each year for the last 4 years and have asked the same questions. The more time I spend there the more I am sure it just doesn't add up.I see cell phones in all most everyone's hands,I see lady's dressed in 100.00-200.00 us dollar outfits.I know this because my wife loves to shop there.I see apartments for rent for 500.00 to 2000.00 a month, cars that cost 2000.00 to 80,000.00 us dollars.I see young kids in the coffee shops on there laptops.SO WHERE DOES IT ALL COME FROM.I really have no ideal.I do know I pay my interpreter 25.00 U.S. a day and driver .50 cents a kilometer. If anyone can shed light on how this is possible please let me know.
Simple explanation: The people you deal with are NOT the majority.
I have a friend who makes less than $200 a month, when she has a job, because during the crisis she was one of the first to be left without a job. Family and friend support is a big thing. In Kiev wages are higher, but cost of living is too.
