Customs officer? Usually there isn't any. During the several times in and out of Odessa I have not met a customs officer yet. The nearest thing is one lady behind the desk most times and when I have walked past saying "Nothing to declare" she has always answered in perfect English so she certainly understands.
I think some of these "War Stories" might be touched up for the reader's benefit. ~Shrug~
well... at least nooga put his wallet where his mouth was! at least he did go to odessa. i think we are all being a bit unfair... i'll be living with olya in kyiv pretty soon and i think nooga should try ukraine again... i would certainly buy him a drink in kyiv! maybe he will have a better perspective... /pete

You still in England ???
Wish we had of stayed another month - weather been awful here in NZ since we got back. 30c in Kiev today. Did you sort a job in Kiev ??
Peter
Just to clarify, the officer said in English before grabbing the money and after looking at my passport: "A gift for me!". I remember now another female officer sitting behind a desk like Dun said. She also asked me if I had anything to declare, apparenly the first one was just trying to get some cash. I had customs officers ask me about how much money I had also at Borispol. The exact same thing happened during my departure but the officer was very professional and did not ask to see the money. Be careful if you carry large amounts of cash because they might randomley pull you aside.
ExACLTY what was said to Wayne at arkadia, there was 50 griv in his passport case, "ooh, a present for me?... no, no, no, you are my friend (I'VE ALREADY TAKEN 400Griv FROM YOU!"
Yes I would never put money in my passport. Haven't you ever seen any of the movies. I gather that he was able to discern that you were not from around there.
First time I was in Kiev, my girl hired a taxi to take us around during my stay. Several times
while we were driving around the police motioned to driver to pull over. He got out and showed police his 'license' I guess. After second time this happened, I asked girl, why we were getting to pull over so much? She said that when taxi driver shows his idendification(license), there is always a few hyrvnias there for the police to 'let' him go on his way!!!!
As far as bringing in money to ukraine, anything less than $3000usd does not have to be declared. If you say anything less than that, the officials should know that you know the rules. You don't have to pull out a wat of money. Maybe just have some in your pocket to show something.
Has anyone been to the airport in Sochi? Wow ... I'm glad they have a new one for the Olympics :)
Anyway, I had registered my visa in Tomsk, but didn't do it in Sochi, because I was with my girlfriend and her family .... and none of us could be bothered.
So at the airport, I get in trouble and have 4 policeman around me, talking in very simple Russian that I could understand. A few motions for money, but I play a ignorant tourist card, and eventually they can't be bothered and I go.
Although at the Transnistrea border inside Moldova, I had to hand over 20 Euro. Was fine going there, but coming back on the last bus of the night. There were lots of problems with the passport, and only 20 Euro in my wallet .... so that apparently fixed the problems :)

Mac...in another post you said you were in Tomsk a month before you met girlfriend. You are supposed to register 3 days after you are in country. You said you went to Sochi with her to meet her family......couldn't be bothered????
You can take bus through Palanca to avoid going through Transnistrea area and not worry about paying anyone off.
Oh, and I wasn't trying to avoid Transnistria, I went there on purpose for a day trip.
Met someone on CouchSurfing in Chisinau who was from there, so I went for a day trip. She could not go, but arranged for me to meet her cousin in Tiraspol. No problem going there or there, but going back to Chisinau, my passport had problems :)
