Dark Colors is the norm and DEFINATELY black dress shoes. Nothing worse than to be too casual and your girl is dressed up. I have never wore a white shirt or tie, nice light jacket or blazer is fine. Since it is warming up,I prefer wearing some very nice snug shirts, underarmor type, no collar, showing off a good physique. 90% of guys there wear blue jeans, dressy type though, no levi's. During day you can get away with the greens and browns....black at night.
Only a local can get away with the tennis shoes. I laugh when I see a foreigner that dresses like at home......if I can see....everyone can. My preference is to try to fit in and NOT look like a foreigner, just my way.
Slip-ons is good idea Baron.
The gf once told me, a guy's shoes is one of the first thing she looks sees, makes a big impression, get something with some point in it too!!!
Christ - I must stand out like a flashing neon light then !!!!!!
During hot days - its shorts (design style denim- you know the ones with heaps of pockets of different sizes) one of those gauze hole ridden cotton T's that let me survive the heat in the metro and Taxi bus. Sports shoes with socks that don’t come above the rim, so looks like you got no socks on, that gets alot of sideways looks from the older ones ( ones my age :-)
We go every where with me looking like that !!!
My wife (Kievian) styled and approved my dress - so I am happy.
Heaps of locals wear shorts now - 5 years ago, not many at all.
Night time - I stick to top line jeans with similar quality shirts and black sneakers or lace up leathers
Julian, your lady will be just fine when she gets here. She will be in for a shock for sure; you will most likely start dressing better when you two are together. And she will most likely relax her style a bit also.
My name is Phil also, not meaning to anomynous (sp?). My dog's name is Baron.
And yes, as you can see from SMs comments some folks play this game for a long time flying back and forth and going through women like candy. I fully researched everything before I started my journey and got lucky out of the gate. Actually I am a nice guy (at least my mother and my Alla think so) and therefore many women were attracted to me from the beginning; maybe others do not have this attraction so they have a difficult time.
Slip on dress shoes are OK and I saw a lot of blunt toed shoes when I was in Kiev; so leave the real pointy ones for the ladies.
Definately dress nice for your first meeting. Will your lady meet you at the airport? If so make sure you dress nice getting off the plane. And bring a single red rose from home to give when you first get off the plane; you will score big points.
For jeans, I'd recommend black jean versus blue jeans.
And, bring a small shoe shine kit. Every time Alla and I went out of the apartment, one part of the ritual at the door (changing from the apt. slippers to the outdoor shoes or boots) was to give a quick polish and shine.
"SERIOUSLY, do I have go everywhere as if I am on job interview???"
No.
Personally wouldn't want to emulate russian/ukraine male dress "style" which seems to consist of black everything especially a long leather coat. Basically they are all trying to look like mafia henchmen because thats the highest social status you can archive over there.
I tend to dress designer-casual: expensive designer blue jeans, italian shoes, designer shirts i.e. as I would to impress a girl here. I want to look western but it a good way.
As has been said "american casual" (bassball shirt/jeans/sneakers) is definitely out and going to get you laughed at if you venture into an upmarket club or bar or something.
Have never work a formal suite/tie over there and dont ever intend to (because I dont wear them here either)
To answer your question that you have posted in another thread, to divert attention away from your attack on others, is on page 1 of this thread as copied and pasted below:

Julian, as you can see, the forums here on Fiance.com are not the greatest. They are mostly populated with a select bunch of posters who snipe constantly at each other and offer no real constuctive information.
That is a true statement Martin. It seems a bunch of you have real experience but there is this constant sniping back and forth that derails the posting thread. You may be so wrapped up in it that you yourself do not see it. It is a shame since there seem to be folks who ask real questions and then their thread gets high jacked. You may not be part of the bad bunch but my comments about the forums here are valid, in my opinion.
I think there will always be 'sniping. on many a forum and not just this one. Sure, in the past there have been plenty of exchanges of personalities, we even had a Ukrainian female here for one period who, aside from many other faults, was calling some guy(s) here a 4 letter word beginning with 'C'.
Threads will always be hijacked, just read through and see how many threads, as an example, have turned to US politics which might be very interesting for US nationals but can bore the socks off the rest of the world's population :)
But, for quite a while now, it has been reasonably harmonious but there are a minority to post to cause contraversy and one individual in particular who thinks it's clever that when other(s) do not agree with his opinion(s) he responds by insinuating and/or (word for word) calling their wife or partner a whore or prostitute and it is that individual who, almost single handedly, has been disrupting this forum of late.
But, aside from that individual, you cannot say that we do not offer constructive information, just read through and you'll find it, in this thread alone I was offering Jamie 'constructive information'.
Another question about dress and presentation. What about after shave or colgne? I am not big into splashing on man perfume, but occassionaly I'll spritz on some cologne or after shave. Women here always have a compliment to me. My last girlfriend picked it out and she made a good choice.
Will women in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus think it odd if a man wears cologne? And I don't mean saturday night fever, high karate, english leather smell you walking in the room shit. I'm talking something very tasteful that one would have to be close to realize. I'm trying to cover all the bases.
RB, my comment was that it seemed being "color blind" was a reference to race and had nothing to do how one was dressed. That was why I said, "please dont start..." Fair?

If the understanding is as bad as the attention to detail demonstrated above (apparently it is), little wonder the conclusion. Buddy, you absolutely “don’t get” Russian thinking when it comes to dress and social benchmarking.
Well my observation was perhaps more specifically about Ukraine, and was based on what I was told by several people who I know who have lived there for many years.
Anyway if I "dont get it" then perhaps you would care to enlighten us all ?.
Julian, every woman likes a man to smell nice. But not from the other side of the room. I use Old Spice myself; just a little around the neck and on the chest. I brought my lady some perfume to Kiev where we met and she liked it. Also not too strong.
And don't forget to shave before you go to bed!
RWs usually shower at least twice a day, once in morning and once before bed.
I'll let you draw the obvious conclusions :)
And SM, I didn't mean to stir up anyone's angst. I didn't like the insinuation from others when I started posting here that my process was wrong. I just got lucky. Luck also comes with hard work; so I will use that as my excuse. I don't mean to pick a fight with anyone; but yes this forum does seem to have more sniping than the other good forum I have mentioned. But, I do want to contribute and do not want to pick a fight with you or anyone else. I'll just post my experiences from now on. Sri for any angst I may have caused you. Truce?
Julian, when I made my first post about color blind, I said something about a beenie. That happened in Ukraine, not in high school. At that time, there was not much replies to your thread and I was trying to help. Sooty replied to the color blind part and I replied to Sooty. Anyway, you can see how a thread can not necesarily be high jacked, but change subjects.
DMC: I’ve no desire to attempt to “enlighten you all” or was that “y’all”? I don’t know much, spent only limited time in the FSU states (About a year and a half of the last 10 years) been married to a Russian woman for a little more than a handful of years, dated a few before that along with a few from several other FSU states. I am only scratching the surface with my knowledge however is does shock sometimes when I read statements made by people who have visited briefly and claim to be able to apply their “knowledge” with uniformity and assuredly across a very wide geographic and demographic spread.
Your post: The first thing I notice is that Russians (or most other people) don’t “archive” their social status until they are dead. Your post implied (Intentional or otherwise) that Russian mafia may be identified by dress. Nothing could be further from the truth. The mafia henchmen for the most part will be the most average looking guy and as a westerner you will have no hope of identifying them from anyone else. I think the freshmen should be aware of this.
Black leather has a very practical history and you will find factory workers near Bacau, Kishinev, Kursk, Krsanoyarsk, Vladivostok or anywhere else, the wealthy from the top end of any city you choose to name, fishermen on Baikal, young bucks in Moscow or wherever and everyone else in between will don or have a black or dark leather, probably mid length jacket. It is primarily about historical practicality. Black or dark leather (and earlier styles and versions) is warm, it has been historically fairly cheap, particularly as the Chinese (and other SE Asian or Gypsy) traders pushed out from Irkutsk right across to Romania over the last 130 or so years, it stays looking OK in the rough and tumble of the public transport situation, it sheds rain and snow rather well, is comfortable and wearable, thus it has become something bordering on traditional in a relatively short space of time.
I’ve no issue with you or anyone else venturing observations which of course will vary slightly from location to location but to dogmatically steer the freshmen up Bullshit Avenue is providing a disservice. FWIW, I dislike black leather jackets for myself but in the end (kicking, screaming and otherwise protesting with MIL and Mrs up my ribs. BTW, don’t ever pull on a fight with 2 Russian women at once, I was toast) bought one which remains in my IL’s hallway cupboard in Russia and is only used when I visit during colder or inclement weather. Bottom line is it works and works well much as I am loath to admit it.
Vova or Serg or Natasha average Russian has no desire to be seen as connected to the mafia and the ones who are certainly won’t let you know.
Julian: You won't miss a lay for wearing decent mens perfume. You might if you stink. Colognes and After Shaves are very well accepted and for that matter respected. I've found FSU women warm to a guy with high personal standards.
Shopping in the USA you will probably not find too many clothes that will impress FSU women. My wife prefers clothes made in Turkey as number 1 and European and Fsu countries next. She says American clothes are terrible. But wash them before they are hemmed because they are not preshrunk.
Her favorite cologne is Armani Code. So that is one opinion, you can take it for what it is worth.
I certainly never meant to imply that you can walk down the street and point to someone and say "he's in the mafia" that would of course be ridiculous. Its more a case of people dressing to play up to the stereotype, like some insurance sales man living london who dresses like an east end gangster when he goes out (even though actual gangsters probably never dressed that way).
I've had many people living in Ukraine both natives and ex pats, tell me the same story though: that there's a strong correlation between wealth/status and crime/corruption. The default assumption is that if someone is very wealthy they achieved it by corruption or exploitation of some form even if not from outright criminal activity.
