Ben previous posts he's been labeled a bigot, not necessarily this thread.
My point to Sooty would be articulate your message better, then your adversaries have no argument then they show their true colors. Labeling someone as a bigot, Racist, Chauvanist etc is a ploy to put someone on the defensive without the merit of their argument.
Remember the Clinton tactic, it's not whether it's true or not, but the seriousness of the allegation. Politics of personal destruction. I won't play into that hand.
Hey they can have an argument. Though an argument without merit or base of facts or truths is no argument at all. There are two sides to every argument, then there is the truth and nothing exposes the weakness of an argument but truth. Just like the Title to this thread. It could be changed very easy without the vitriol and still get across the same message with a better impact.
There is a relevance to this thread regarding Ukrainians and their positions on such things in life. Their biases and they are not so open minded regarding such social issues they may run into in their new country.
Three years in the states and my wife laughs at our education system. She sees the children as unruly and undisciplined. Little education in the fundemental learning aspects. Very little postive direction on the importance of achievement in school.
I cringe to think of what gays do, but they don't involve me. I have never been hit on by a gay. I opposed gay marriage because I believe it should be between a man and a woman. I don't know much about gays. I think there is merit to the fact that they are born that way and there is nothing you can do to change that. (Of course there are those who are bi and those who are not gay but engage in such acts.)
I cannot see the argument to deny them basic rights or Sir Elton John being denied adoption.
RB it's call National Sovereignty, the ability of a free nation(people) to rule themselves. Something the US has long forgotten due to political correctness and an Activist Judicial system.
Perfect Example, Gay Marriage, states overwhelming have turned down this proposition, which is within their right, but it will be litigated in the Supreme court and possibly overturned without any constitutional reason. The 9th and 10th amendments guarantee this to the states.
Same as Roe V. Wade, no where is this a Federal Issue, this is a states rights issue, but no one has the balls to overturn it, or congress which also has the final say in what the supreme court can rule on. It's been a ploy to take power away from the people and centralize it.
Look at affirmative action it's reverse discrimination and has expanded to cover more than just Blacks who this was intially for. The Camel got his nose in the tent and the party was over then, everyone was a victim except the White American male. Who legally now can be discriminated against.
What did Dr. King say, don't judge me by the color of my skin, but the content of my character. Hmmmm seems we are doing exactly the opposite of what Dr. King asked for.
XVVX, you forgot my Favorite, The Reverand Al Sharpton, Maybe Al's busy lately with a second job delivering pizza's to payoff the defamation lawsuit he lost to the Cop in New York over Tawana Brawley. He's never paid off.
All of these issues you state, aren't they either the majority opinion or being advanced by ELECTED officials or appointed by elected officials?
"Perfect Example, Gay Marriage, states overwhelming have turned down this proposition, which is within their right, but it will be litigated in the Supreme court and possibly overturned without any constitutional reason."
The key word here is "probably". Don't make a point with that word until it is done. When did the Supreme Court ever make a decision without constitutional reason?
The American system is not perfect, but it is a rule by the people. Have an issue loud enough, often enough by a majority and you will be heard. People might not agree with President Obama's healthcare, including me, but he told people about that before he got ELECTED, and he got ELECTED.
Roe V. Wade is a perfect example of activist decision without any constitutional grounds.
Also we are not a majority opinion country we are a constitutional republic, majority is for democracies not republics. That's why the founders set the constitution that way. Only in a democracy can a Hitler come into power.
The attempt is being made,(Gay marriages) and will be infront of the Supreme Court as soon as President Obama can seat enough liberal judges. Right now it might not make certorari, but they will wait until then.
The Supreme court is not a superlegislature and it has ventured into areas it should not go.
Perfect Example of deplorable decision, Try the Dred Scott Case.
In the U.S. there is the separation between church and state.
In the state everyone is equal under the law. Sorry, but that includes homosexuals, anti-abortionists and freedom of expression.
"You are the light of the world, a city on a hill cannot be hidden." Jesus is referring to the church. Are we as a church not
going to take this challenge or are we going to hide behind the state? Let your light show before men. Don't count on the state
to save you. I will "pay unto Ceasar" but I will not hide behind the state. The state is ungodly and selfish in their legislation.
Look to the church. Separate yourselves among men.
Texasdude, surely this goes both ways - the church then has a responsibility to not only put its views forward clearly, but to ensure that the state is separate from the church - especially in the eyes of the world. For instance, not allowing political leaders to use pseudo-religion to advocate (just wildly pulling an example out of the air) going to war?
You said it yourself, 'Separate yourselves among men'. I wish we as a church would do a little more of that.
Given that the executive and legislature are both elected, and the judiciary is appointed by the elected, is a constitutional republic so different from a democracy? Also, given that the legislature and judiciary-appointing executive largely enjoy electoral success roughly equal to their financial and/or corporate backing, is there not an element of oligarchy inherent (even if not designed) in the USA system?
This isn't anti-Americanism, btw, I just don't often get to talk politics on even a mildly cerebral level :)
It is much more of an oligarchy than a democratic society that's for sure. The average person should not be ALLOWED to vote. Because the majority of these clowns are nothing but used car salesmen. The average person does not have a clue what goes on in congress, the white house, the supreme court and not to mention the federal reserve.
Look at the clown that is in charge now. A perfect example of Americans voting for the rock star mentallity. And Pelosi --- don't get me started -- you already have. All I can say is thank God Obama beat out Clinton. The lesser of two evils.
Don't know how this all got turned into a political thing but since we are on the subject: If any person who holds office in the United States of America is re-elected, the American people are fools!
Not a single damned one of them should be re-elected! I don't care, liberals, independants and the conservatives. But you all must know, it is the liberal left wing agenda that is screwing up this once great country. Our children are not learning in schools anymore. Every left wing group cries foul or racism or bigotry whenever they are called to task.
Look what happened to Wilson who called Obama a lier(He truly is a lier by the way). They immediately attacked him as a racist. Bullshit! I grew up loving this country (USA) but lately I am becoming more and more disenchanted with the idea of living here in the next twenty years. These clowns are running it into the ground. And most of these clowns have a jack ass as their mascot. There are many crooks on both sides of the aisle. At least the crooks on the right care about moral decency and what is good for the country. We may as well hand the keys to the white house over to Putin.
That's why our very smart founding fathers inserted the Electoral College, because sometimes the public can become mad. They had just seen what went down in France.
Julian35 I agree, giving everyone a vote is a waste of time, infact it does more harm than good. It used to work when people cared about their country and not themselves and now minority groups know how to play the game and get more than they should.
Ben2006, surely that's a failing of the voters, rather than the voting system itself? Minority groups can only get laws passed if the majority groups can't be arsed voting.
"Democracy isn't perfect, but it'll do till we find something better"
