Dictatorship is when the country is run by a key figure supported by an elite inner circle. This was East Germany. Nothing Socialist about it. There is no choice by the people in who partakes in the inner circle or who runs the country. Socialism is where the Government provides a large or significant part of the means of production ans services. There are a number of these countries and they have democratically elected governments. From an American perspective half of Europe can be classed as socialist. In fact some of the most socialist (the Scandinavian counties) recently were categorised in 5 of the top 6 positions of best places to live ranked by economy, lifestyle and personal freedom. Not too many running away from there. I had to laugh when I read one idiot conservative polition running for President of the USA claiming that Communism had been beaten oblivious to the fact that the largest trading partner of the US is communist, that the US is now in hock to this country for a couple of trillion dollars and in the next 5 - 10 years will be the largest economy in the world. I think the Goverment is good at providing some services but not good at all in production of goods. The point is East Germany was not Socialist, it was a dictatorship where the government controlled everything for the purpose of controlling the population, not for the benefit of the population. The use of East Germany to comment on the good or bad of Socialism or communism is like using Zimbabwe as a commentary on the success of capitalism. Worst inflation ever seen, trillion dollar notes, economic refugees, no goods in shops a complete breakdown of society. See how bad capitalism was for Zimbabwe! They did neither though one could argue that the loan guarantees of Freddie Mac and Fanny Mae had implicit government guarantees. The problem was a loose money supply from the Greenspan era causing asset inflation in conjunction with banks taking on bad loans to poor risk customers because they could onsell these loans packaged as securitised debt, transferring the risk to less sophisticated lenders. Banks generate most of their income from fees these days rather than interest rate spreads so they get fees on the writing then sale of the loans, encouraging them to write more loans at any cost. All looks good until the asset price inflation stops and reverses by wasting lots of money on a futile war, getting screwed on oil prices and the Fed tightening money supply all at the same time. The defaulting assets cant be sold to cover the cost of the loans, speculators cant exit their positions, lenders reevaluate their risk profiles, credit stops banking system fails. The state did not nationalise industry or operate industry. If you dont know what Africa is like then I will tell you they provided bugger all in terms of social services as well. Mugabe for a while was quite progressive in encouraging industry for a while after he took power. I know a couple of people involved in mining construction projects and a guy who had a share in a foundry there (no government involvement, all private investment). Basically he got power hungry and kicked Nkomo out of the power sharing deal and caved in to factions in his support group who wanted to get wealthy quickly. Groups took over the white owned farms that had operated well under the new regime, the goverment refused to support the rule of law, investment collapsed the currency devalued, those whites who could leave left with as many assets as they could carry and as a result economy collapses. Basically your perspective is that all countries outside of the US are Socialist. You still are ignoring the fact that the biggest socialist country of them all is now producing a large portion of your consumer goods, is keeping your financial system afloat grew at 8% in the last quarter and is on track to surpass you as the worlds largest economy in the next few years. The reason US forces are in europe is 2 fold protection by involvement in NATO and mainly they are within easy striking distance of the middle east where all the oil is.
