"Although I don't completely agree with Mini 100%, he comes pretty close to the mark. I have had more than one girl ask me if men in America hit their wives? I even met a girl that had her nose broken, etc... by her husband. I don't think the violence is so much accepted as people take the attitude of "don't get involved." I have seen instances of spousal abuse within my family tree and outside of it here in the USA. It depends on the person's character and attitude if they are abusers. If the majority of women in Eastern Europe don't have morals, then that will make the numbers worth considering ever so smaller.
