Beem, I don't cook. Police in most of Ukraine are corrupt, but in that previous case they would have shaken down the owner, not me... regardless it scared the apartment owner away. Was I supposed to be the stupid weak foreigner and spend two hours packing, moving and unpacking if I'd done nothing and threatened nothing?
yes apal....but in my years of visiting ukraine I have never dealt with what you did......maybe you just picked the wrong companies...I use only a couple that I trust....
For example, one time I flew into Kiev without knowing what city i was visiting, once landed I called company and within a half hour i had my apt...of my choice/price and coming back later to kiev....one family moved out of their apt so I could have place to stay( they got share of rent), they even were finishing up painting when I arrived.....had i known that family had 2 daughters still living there, I would have insisted that I only needed a room!!!!! :-))
BTW...I cook every morning.....and at times cook dinner with ladies....
I should really learn to cook. But I just hire a cook or maid.
I like hotels booked through major travel sites for the extra layer of protection it adds when your shelling out a lot of money.
It also helps when dealing with airlines too. Last year, I booked directly on KLM from ATL (Atlanta) to AMS (Amsterdam) and then to head to ODS (Odessa) on a totally seperate Airlines.
Getting there, DELTA lost my luggage and it didn't arrive in AMS, but that was only half the point. I went on to ODS to meet my beautiful fiance.
Get this after settling in ODS... I complained to DELTA customer support. Ray Lynn (Delta Airlines CS) got pissed she couldn't understand I was in Odessa and for my luggage to be shipped there. I told her not to get snitty on the phone.
What happened next? I never got my luggage after 3 weeks and my weekly chat with Delta Customer Service... never got it (6 months later I got it!) But when I got back to AMS to head back to the USA? I found out that DELTA CS had cancelled my return trip back to the USA once I returned to AMS Airport! For no reason! One year later and still no refund for their cancellation.
If I had used expedia.com or travelocity.com instead of the direct airlines website (I saved $100) thinking I was getting a better deal, I would have been issued a refund and expedia would have prevented Delta CS from cancelling the flight.
Don't think any of you experienced that, because it shocked all the KLM people at AMS airport that had happenened. It even shocks other Delta employees... its a moral bummer for the loyal airlines staff. Its a nightmare.
Oh, when they returned my luggage? Someone had left it sitting for a long time in some oil, so my suits and best clothes were ruined and my laptop was cracked...
Oh, but I still fly Delta (for some reason that flight to Europe via the ATL to AMS lane is very cheap).
But I won't book directly on their website. I am forced to do this with Southwest Airlines who's CEO won't allow SWA to use the GDS registration system that the other airlines use. I'm a little wary of using SWA but for the most part not one single problem ever occurred with them.
Once I wrongly boarded the incorrect plane. Ticket counter girl said it was the right flight and took my ticket. I was heading to LAX and in El Paso found out I was heading back to Dallas Airfield. ;)
The pilot had to turn the entire plane around. It was an early evening flight and people were freaked out because it could have happened to anyone. Right gate, right time (except it was a change of time zones by one hour exactly I think). ;)
Pilot turns the entire plane around, taxis back to the terminal and docks at the gate and announces "Hey, anyone wanting to go to LA and not back to the same city where they just came from? This would be a pretty good darn time to get off the plane now! Good luck!" ;) Everyone on the whole flight was laughing. Great time!
