I can claim that every Russian and Ukrainian lady i have met over there and here about a dozen or more at the least claimed to me their fathers and husbands are no longer around .They either died in their 40`s to early 50`s or just disappeared because they could not handle the stress of having a family and could not provide. To change the direction here a little, I can tell you for a fact that a former russian i dated here in my city her name was Guzel was here on a student work visa claimed to me how much she loved her father.I saw her out a year later and she said that her father had died.I asked her if she went back for the funeral and she said no with no remorse in her face or voice.I knew why ,she alread had two years clocked on her visa and she didnt want to screw that up towards getting her citizenship. So much for family values......
I did find more people drink alcohol versus beer that my friends from England enjoy so much. I have to admit I do like to drink a little when I travel or for special occasion. It is normal for me to save some good stuff for a holiday or special event. I come from a family of alcoholics so I am conscious of the affects on daily life.
There is nothing wrong with drinking in moderation. In fact, nutritionists say that alcohol in moderation is good for you, especially red wine.
Oh dear, I see ragingbull coming to tell to me to post the link to the official study and worldwide statistics in the last 100 years to support my statement :-D
Though I need to develop and analyze numerical data for my work, I have never studied statistics (as a branch of math).
As to the effect of age at marriage, on longevity of marriage: I haven't looked into this question. A quick web search didn't turn up much. I think that probably nobody has gathered the kind of data needed to answer the question properly.
The only thing I found were some claims that research (without references) shows that marriages started in the teens are particularly unlikely to last -- not very surprising!
For my money, the attitude toward alcohol you described is the sensible way to approach it.
I went 15 years without drinking, just to stay on the safe side (I also have a family history). More recently, I've "taken up the bottle" again. I average not more than two drinks a month -- that's plenty for me.
"I am only interested in the current or latest studies or statistics, I do not care what it was like 100, 50 or even 10 years ago. Ciecumstances change all the time."
If you are only interested in current statistics, why did you come up with a one hundred year study to back up your claim? You can't run with this. No way. Circumstances change, but not this. The maturing of women and men did not suddenly disappear.
Yes, disappear. You said it didn't exist. One or even two year change might be acceptable when given with a good explanation. You gave nothing of the sort.
There is one point in which we disagree. If I am wrong there, I will gladly accept it. Whether or not I am smart or dumb there will still be an age when people mature.
statistics really are floored but as any country we all have drinking problems.
could it be with russians and the deaths many of these die from meths drinking?
i have seen them line up at the chemist when shops are closed to alcohol sales.
they are not small lines.
so whos really killing them?
the government program or the poverty they find themselves living?
of cause its alcoholism but its not so simple as that.
we have just as many drunks here in NZ (actually i thought more per population) but their addiction isnt cruelly hung like a carrot on a string in front of them to the point they have to look at other means for satisfaction.
how can you let thousands drink poison because they have an addiction?
that could almost be classed as murder, could it?
statistics?
the last few times i have been to the doc to get stitched up, only because they are far to deep or around tendons i will not do it myself)
strangely both of these times i had one little bottle of beer for various reasons before i went.
like dropping from the frig, so burst cap and needed to be drunk,,, why waste)
doctor wrote on my record alcohol related or is in a state of intoxication,,,,, interesting interesting for i quarried this,,,, if they smell it, they have to ask,, so then its written in my record.
now i'm a possible drunk in their eyes,,,,,, my records dont lie but are they telling the real story.
statistics are plain dodgy.
i found girls i met over there a little over the top in their reactions when a man was just wanting to quench his thirst with a simple beer when he felt like it,,,,, seems its not the russian way of doing things.
i think many,,, or a lot of these girls have there tits crossed in what real alcoholism is.
end of the day, what ever drinking is going on over there, its more of a problem in the poverty class of person where its not good.
not so much around the people most of you look amongst, for that really isnt poverty and they aren't the majority meths drinkers.
you know real poverty,,, where the many old derelict apartment blocks and ruins are a sorry sight of people sitting around in groups waiting for something.
the supposedly dead beats of life or garden raiders.
yet the children there still seem happy, most still hold a smile with colour in their clothes, strange how kids show a difference..
it really is a dreadful sight.
myself i wondered if these russian girls compared me and my little beer with these lost people?
embarrassment because thats what their poverty stricken are classed as, drunks plus many other things.
that so called common ground i had with these people for quenching my thirst.
personally i found the whole drinking thing over there odd with stupid protocols.
as in the girls, some took a while to lighten up with me having a beer,,,,,,,,,,,,, other times one just had to say, would you just shut up)
we all see things different at the end of the day,,, as in do russians drink to much?
thats just an easy excuse for narrow minded woman in my eyes, but hey i could be wrong.
I wonder if Russia or Ukraine exercise or teach prevention or have recovery programs instituted ? Medically or Alchoholics Anonymous ? One thing is for sure ,they have many deaths that occur too early in life because they have a medeivel health care program or a lack of one. They simply live till they drop or it`s too late .My former girlfriend told me she had many many friends and acquantences die too young in life in Ukraine because they do not have adequate health screening, medicine ,emergency response teams or people just live with their ailments and suffer till they die.It is a reality over there compared to here.I feel that`s a good reason why there men live shorter life spans.
Thanks, Kiwi. The study referenced only used smokers for their data. Since Russian men includes nonsmokers, it is unclear if drinking is actually the cause of their mortality. It maybe true probably true that 1/4 of them die before the age of 55, but it is not correct to blame drinking because of the study. That's not to say it isn't true. But as you say, it could be other causes. Thanks to Durak for making that clear.
Here is a study on alcohol consumption by countries. http://goo.gl/EoXYR7
Ukraine #4
Russia #16
UK #17 (Why are their mortalities not affected as much as Russian? Look at Selkie's post on the first page.)
New Zealand #52
US #58
Perhaps the women would want to see how a guy is after a few drinks,,, to see how he handles it. I think the biggest problem is that Russian men turn into mean or angry drunks, and that’s where the abuse comes from.
Ukrainian girls know how to drink,,, I was sitting next to two on the plane from KBP to Amsterdam. They brought booze along with them on the plane,,, bought drinks,,, then bought a bottle. It didn’t affect them in the slightest,,,, I didn’t get any sleep on that flight,, or in Amsterdam. And no,, they didn’t join me.
shorter life spans,,,, Sunvolt thats more about do you want the job or not i think, the appalling conditions.
and really wouldnt that send you to drink at the end of the day.
one of my last trips over there, in Ukraine there was about forty men stuck in a mine from an explosion not far from where i was staying.
they were very deep, they were lucky enough to say goodbye to their family's if thats the right word.
they all had so many minutes on the phone(fuck knows who set the time limit)
they still had wire phone contact until the air ran out or what ever it was.
it was awful seeing the family's in grief for what was about to happen.
i actually shed tears that day, breathing beautiful air with the worldly space around me.
i will never forget it.
so may things there i would have to say was appalling to me.
those lines waiting to buy meths were in russia, never saw such in ukraine.
i'm not sure which country i saw the worst come to think of it.
the guy sunning his foot with all his bones sticking out by an inch(back from the nonexistent toe bones) was a bit interesting, .
it looked like how we cut a rib roast here with a sequence of rib bones sticking out of the meat(rack roast) but his meat was black buy another inch.
at least he was drinking real vodka(Kharkov)
maybe it was a ploy for passerby's to buy him vodka.
Last week i had an in depth telephone conversation with a Ukrainian lady of 31 years old who is a manager of a language school in Mariupol who speaks perfect english. I asked her about the myth perpetrated by or towards western men about their women seeking marriage outside their country for a better life and their men being so called inadequate to them and all the rest of what we all hear about. Me, i prefer knowledge of what we tend to speculate much about to go straight to the source and i grabbed the bull by the horns meaning i want to hear all about it from her !!! So i asked her if she was single and she said no that she was happy. I asked her if she had any friends or knew of any single woman from her city who were single looking to marry and or getting older and desperate to marry. Her answer was no ,none at all. Then she said are you mixed up with one of those marrige agencies and i about fell out of my chair ! She said the women usually that are clients of these agencies have personal problems and feel marrying a foreign man is going to solve her personal problems. Then she said as wisdom tells us their problems stay with them usually. Then i asked about their men and the drinking and infidelity and she said thats not all true either. She said they work very hard long hours in the factories and dont want to go to the ballet or the park, some not all she said need to drink sometimes to let off steam. It was a real pleasure to speak with this woman to hear her side of the story and the myth .
