To all who care about Crimea -- and especially rb, who shares my depth of feeling about this ...
... one of my great frustrations about the (non) response of the West, is that from early days I heard proposals that sanctions be applied to every member of the GosDuma (Russia's legislative body) who voted for the annexation of Crimea.
As it happens, every member of the Duma except one made this vote. And reportedly, quite a lot of them are wealthy folks with financial assets, houses, and children in the West (they don't want their kids to suffer from the wretched limitations of Russia's educational system).
According to Russia watchers, if all of these Duma members were sanctioned, it would cause an earthquake that would shatter the apparent solidity of Putin's political machinery.
I can imagine those filthy thieves falling all over themselves, trying to figure out how to get Russia the hell out of Crimea in the smallest possible number of days.
But like most of the proposed sanctions, it is scarcely worth doing, unless Europe signs on.
"But like most of the proposed sanctions, it is scarcely worth doing, unless Europe signs on."
Regardless what is right or wrong, Europe won't agree to proper sanctions because of their financial connections to Russia (existing 'sanctions' are a joke which make zero difference). The three big players in Europe are Germany, UK, and France. France has an existing $1.6 billion deal with Russia to supply two ships for carrying helicopters, tanks, vehicles and troops - which it will not cancel. Germany (and Italy) import much gas from Russia. And the UK benefits by wealthy Russians laundering their dirty money through the City (the UK's stock exchange), and through their investments in the central London property market. America isn't going to get too involved over Crimea either. All the Western governments may not like the annexation of Crimea, but their words are mostly guff and bluster, and NONE will risk going to war over a small peninsula in the Black Sea. They will turn a blind eye, just like they did with Georgia.
Whether you admire or despise him, Putin, the gangster and little KGB man and oligarch of oligarchs, is cleverer than the EU and US politicians, and has once again outwitted them. This dispute may be best fought by Ukraine...
I wonder Crimea are getting their basic necessities. Electricity and water are still being supplied by Ukraine, I guess. The easiest for food, supplies and equipment would be by rail through Ukraine. That is heavily curtailed, I guess.
Either Russian cargo ships are working overtime or there are severe shortages. Perhaps a little or a lot of both? The problem is, although there are stories here and there, there are very little photographs coming from Crimea.
The women I know in Crimea just pick up a new Job there at the Aquapark which is opening in Yevpatoriya. she is happy now that Russia has taken back Crimea as she did not trust the Ukraine Government. plus her Ukraine friends are happy too with Russian control. she can not entry Ukraine now from the Crimea broader.
the Crossing points to Crimea kerch to Russia is 5 hour waiting to get across by ferry you can entry Russia with a Ukraine passport but you can not entry Russia with a Ukraine registered Car. everything is coming in by boat there. she show me the new bridge that Russia is building to cross over it about 19 km long.
food has gone up by 50% now the banks are just starting to come back there no western union is operating there yet.
my wife who was in crimea in 2007 has a huge smile on her face about crimea and tears in her eyes about the fighting in Ukraine.
she was at crimea in 2007 and has commented how we will visit crimea in 5 years . she cant wait to see how much better it is and says how it will take about 5 years until its worth visiting .all her reports are the people there are happy
The other problem they have there now is, the refugees from the War in the Ukraine flooding over the broader for protection she was saying a lot childern. the people there have been fund raising a lot of food and gifts for the childern it is breaking their hearts this war.
all the Crimean people are saying 4-5 year it will be back to glory again. the problem I told her was that Russians are now going on Holiday to Thailand and it's cheap to go there. the Russians have now found a new holiday destination.
