well i sent packages to moldova via postal servive on 2 different times it took 4 days from the time i ship until she received it
i had books cd cd player and even a ring i had no problem anywhere along the way and everything was in the box when it arrived
Glad to hear things aren't disappearing into a black hole anymore :-)
I did change my strategy, tho':
The US Postal (Dis)service :-) actually has two kinds of customs forms:
Form 2976, The "Short Form"
Form 2976-A, The "Long Form"
The Long form is larger, and gives you more room to provide better descriptions of what you're sending.
The long form also allows you to specify something you can't on the short form - Box 16 allows you to specify what to do in case of non-delivery: Abandon, Return to Sender, or Deliver to another address. I always check the "Return To Sender" box. Perhaps the customs guys realize that it's easier to let it pass than to go through the paperwork and manpower hassle of sending it back.
There is a drawback - I don't think some of the cheaper mailing methods are available (like book rate), but it's worth it to know my stuff will reach it's destination.
I have looked at other courier services, but most times the cost of shipping far outweighs the costs of the contents.
A month ago send a gift (about 3kg, about 100 pounds worth) to Russia from London using Fedex. Following tracking info parcel arrived in Moscow and waited there for a month with "clearance in progress" and then yesterday recipient received a call from Fedex/Moscow asking for 500 USD to be paid, saying that parcel has been paid only till Moscow (literally). Fedex/London gave another details, saying that 500 USD has to be paid to russian customs in order to get the parcel in russia or BACK in London!!! Unbelievable!
Good luck to those who decide to use Fedex.
Ukraine was a nightmare to send a package.
I sent a package worth about $100 with CDs, photos, small stuff via FedEx. It cost me about $120 additional randsom from the Ukrainian customs so it would be delivered. It also took a month of phone calls to FedEx to resolve it.
Years ago back in 2004, when I was new to this, I meet a real girl on the internet from Kiev and I sent her 4 small packages by regular air mail post with perfumes, soaps, a portable cd player etc. from Australia and it got through to her all the time and it took 7 to 10 days to get to her as well as $50 usd note hidden in a greeting card.
We wrote and telephoned for 6 months but she moved to Germany and shacked up with a guy who got her a job over there ( which was better for her as she wanted to be close to family and Australia is way too far away ).
You can send small parcels under 2 kilograms ( about 5 pounds ) and don't put anything too valuable in them so they by pass Ukraine customs o.k.
Don't send any mp3 players, they get taxed or stolen ( e.g no ipods, zens etc. ) in Ukraine.
Many girls from Ukraine would rather shack up with a guy from a wealthy European country such as Germany because its so close to there home and its only a train trip away, they don't really want to travel thousands of miles to another country..I found this is there least prefered option and if they find a guy in Europe ( next door to there home country ) they will pick him instead over a guy from a far away country such as US, Australia, Canada etc.
U.K is close enough to them as its still Europe.
Be realistic here. I don't do this any more and actually quit in early 2006 but I still get letters from girls from old profiles I left behind or forgot about on the net, most are scammers.
i had a interesting experience with mail to Ukraine. not much ever got through, just couldn't work it out, been there met her what ever.
it took a bloody long time to click what was happening.
mail that had any personal info of contact of any type of me to make life easier disappeared.
non personal details of any type got through.
she or agency was keeping me writing as long as possible through agency.
i kept thinking this mail system is as corrupt as some of there little old ladies that would run out the back of the shop with ya change from a fiver, and they hand a job.
good stuff.
I Sent a box to the Ukraine on June 28th and it was recieved yesterday buy my fiancee. If you live in the States I suggest using the U.S. Postal service. Not a single problem and everything arrived intact. My understanding is that the U.S. Postal Service has some sort of agreement with the Ukrainians and it is actually cheaper in the long run to use the Post and not FedExtortionists.
A little rumor through the grapevine is that FedEx gets 35% of those duties to help them extort money from you.
For Christmas, I bought two jigsaw puzzles to send to my gf's daughter. It was a map of the world and the US. I thought it would be educational.
On Christmas, I thought my gf would be going out with her friends. I called her. She was home, but sounded busy and could hardly find time to talk to me. "What are you doing?" I asked. The whole family was doing one of the jigsaw puzzles.
i sent 3 things in the past, always have no choice on customs declaration of whats in the parcel. Last time was a disaster, it was with fedex, it took over 40 days to get there, first thing was they said my paperwork went missing, sent paperwork again and asked where it was and why it was missing, fedex said there was paperwork with the parcel and said fedex in ukraine was being slow and not very helpful and they would try and hurry it up. Fedex in ukraine then decided that the parcel had to go through a cleansing process and there would be a charge, the charge turned out to be about 350 dollars, i was appalled and realisticaly i had no choice to pay it as it was going to cost that much to return it, this was even worse because it only cost 60 dollars to send it. I think the reason they did it was because they realised the items in the parcel had a very high 2nd hand street value and was highly desirable, they chanced their arm that i would give up on it but i never. My opinion is some smaller companies that offer low prices thru major couriers beware it could be a scam between the customs people and the smaller courier company. The customs people hold it up and the charge had to be paid through the 3rd party courier. All in all pay the extra and get it done guaranteed 5- 10 day delivery or try and get customs clearance in your own country.
