A person traveling on a ukrainian passport, going to another more economically advanced country would have motivation to stay while despite having a ukrainian passport with permanent residence in THE US would have much less motivation. So their motivation is to escape the more difficult economic situation in their home country. Of course, if they had a US green card and they wanted to travel to other country that required a visa (presumably a well off nation), the motivation to remain there past the visa time limit would be less. The visa is looked upon as a way to track your visit to the other nation and to prevent you from overstaying. Even with the visa requirement, you could "disappear" if someone in that country helped you. I'm due to renew my visa by the 15th of this month but I'm so busy with my business I simply cannot take two days out to go to the nearest immigration office. So I'm going to overstay and the penalty for overstaying is a PHP500.00 (USD11) fine per month of overstaying. Then I need to exit the country every so often, last time I tried to exit immigration refused me leaving the country because my visa was out of date ... Anywhere else in the world one gets deported for breaking the rules ... Here they won't let one leave! If you overstay your visa you are subject to fines plus you have to apply for an exit visa. Overstaying a visa is a serious matter and not without consequences. It's not a joke as you call it. In Russia you can receive a 5 year ban. MartinPC Member send PM   block PM add to buddies Send: 3/11/2015 9:15:10 AM   Tom, I'm really quite informal with the staff in the immigration office, that's what it's like here, the powers that be removed the old immigration officer for being an asshole and they've replaced him with one of the nicest guys one could wish to meet, before now I've sat with him having a beer and last time I was across in the city we bumped shopping trolleys with each other in the supermarket. When the weather is bad I cannot get across to renew my visa, January 2014 we were cut off from the rest of the world because the one road out of town was under 5ft of water ... how the f*ck am I supposed to get to the mainland to renew my visa? :) I know that I can overstay for up to (less than) 6 months and without being blacklisted, I need to get to the mainland city every couple of months for shopping supplies but this island is being so heavily marketed by the Philippines government this year I simply cannot get away whilst I'm running low on supplies. The bahamas, Mexico, and many other countries have a permanent resident exception. ANY passport combined with a green card makes visas unnecessary despite where your passport is from. According to the U.S. Embassy of Mexico, all legal residents of the United States, regardless of their nationality, can travel to Mexico if they are in possession of a green card (now they are pink.)
