Boy if you turn up there asking qustions like Tim said you need a nice kick in the ass.
I am studying Russian as much as I can and I havent told her the extent of what I know(which isn't much by any means). But I have a little over a month left to study and I want to surprise the hell out of her when I'm with her.
I'm taking the same suit with a change of tie, lol
I would take a few of them inflatable doll sorts with you too mate, go down a blinda wiv the local Ivans ;o))
Crash:
Im sorry mate, and I know you are from the US, but both those lines were genuine and sincere questions asked of my Ukraine sister by 2 Americans who were there to meet and date Ukraine girls :o//
I can believe that Tim, there seems to be a big shrotage of common sense where I live. Just take all the guys that work for me for instance. If I'm not there to show them what to do and hold there hands like children, you can be sure everything is screwed up. This is what I deal with every day, its really pathetic. Often I wonder how these dummies remember how to breath when they fall asleep.
Definitly will remember clean undies and socks! =)
Nisse the thing more is not in knowing the history, but rather in knowing the culture, and in understanding the humor we have, and what kind of people we are...that will impress the girl most of all:)
Naturally, that goes without saying, especially being a guest in another country. And I've had a fair bit of training over the months regarding the Russian humour:-)
I think it is important to know how to conduct yourself in any foreign land you happen to be in. Tim's story of the USArs' asking about the bears and such, does not surprize me.
When I first moved to the USA from Australia I was floored at how much they did not know about the rest of the world. Some of the questions I got, apart from the standard, " what language do they speak in Australia?" were..... "Did you come to the US by train?".............>>>>>>> "from Australia hey, then how come you ain't black?"..........Of course this was all pre Crocidile Dundee era.
I moved to Italy for a while with a few of my American friends. Whenever my yank buddies left the room and left me alone with our Italien associates they ---always--- told me of their amusement (to put it politely) with the Americans way of conducting themselves. I used to get a pretty good laugh out of it though. ............
..........point being, when you go to someone elses country, keep a low profile till you figure out what the scoop is there, and you may be able to do that untill you can understand their language.
Obviously i do not refer to anyone on this forum when I say this, but sadly there are millions of Americans who dont know very much about the world outside the USA and many who genuinly do not want to know. The president included :o))
When I was in the US about 4 years ago I watched quite a lot of TV, particularly the news reports, in which "ther rest of the world" got about 1 minute at the end of a 30 minute programme, unless it was about another country in which the US was engaged in some military matter or other.
To many Americans I met Europe just has no interest for them, and many dont even know that the Uk is not just England !! But that was the uneducated people I met, I also met some lovely world wise people, and I know that not all Americans are the same, just as not everyone in Aus, The UK, Germany, or japan are the same as each other either !!
:))))))) Then I have to be thankful to the school program we had;))) We learnt so many things about the whole world, not only geography, but history, culture, and some habits, in order of how to behave there:)
I didn't mean to offend anybody, just wanted to share:)
Well, you all are right. There are alot of self righteous people in my country and there are many people here that have no care what goes on in the rest of the world. There are many many many different types of people here. Remember, were all like...how shall I say it...were like a bunch of muts, mixed breeds here. We are every nationality in the world. Thats what makes up America. I , for example am Italian/German. I still have relatives in both countries as my grandparents immigrated from there. I am very interested what goes on in the world and I always have been. I studied the governments of communist Russia to the democracy in my country very closely back before the iron curtain fell, along with many other subjects along those lines when I was in college. I am very interested in the world outside America and I always have been. even though there are alot of naive people here when it comes to world matters, I have to say I am still very proud of my country, just as I am sure all my friends across the ocean are about their own. My country has come a long way in the 235 years it has been in existance. So, don't think were all idiots here because thats not the case.
" Well, you all are right. There are alot of self righteous people in my country"
Sadly, in mine too Crash :o// Good evening mate by the way, or good afternoon in your case :o))
"I studied the governments of communist Russia to the democracy in my country very closely back before the iron curtain fell"
Hmmm do you get a good pension from the CIA mate ? ;o)))
Im not very proud of my country mate :o/// It wasnt my idea to ally with the US government and bomb Iraq back to the dark ages :o((((
I hate the taxes we are persicuted with, and the stupid beaurocratic bullshit that keeps the Englishman down and gives everything to any workshy layabout mutt who wanders into the country from anywhere they feel like. No I have to say that the only time in my life that I have been proud to be British was the day the whole country united to screw Blair and his gestapo buddies with the fuel fiasco several years ago, now that was the one and only time in my whole life I have ever seen my country united, all be it against its own government, but at least the people were unified !!!
The next time I hope will be when that lunatic PM of ours gives us a referendum on the Euro and we tell him to shove it where the sun dont shine !!! Damn I hope to God we do that :o///
Hi Tim =) Yes its only afternoon here still, but good evening to you.
Actually communism vs. democracy was a required course when I was in my last year of high school. I found it to be very interesting so I studied more in depth while I was in college. I never in a million years thought I would actually get to go to Russia, or to have a Russian girlfriend! Its going to be quite an experience for me and I can say that in about 3 weeks the nerves are going to be going nuts inside of me.
You know, as far as being in Afghanistan or Iraq. I have to say I'm torn. I wish we didn't ever have to go there but you have to realize the shock it was for us when they took out the world trade center and rammed a full size jet into the side of the Pentagon. That really has changed so much in my country. Alot of things we took for granted we can't anymore. My country made many bad decisions in the years leading up to that disaster. And now, unfortunatly we were thrown into the middle of things and here we are. None of this was ever my choice, I think all politicians suck, but I cant change anything. And now this situation in the Middle East seems to have turned into a disater. Its unfortunate
Communism as a an ideal is a fantastic concept, after all it works well enough on Kibutz in Isreal (or it used to anyway) but unfortunately there is the human element which will always produce people more greedy than others, and as soon as you have that communism doesnt work any more as there is the element of the ones who want more than others !!! There is a lot to be said for everyone being absolutely equal, but unfortunately it will never work with human beings :o//
Indeed it is my friend, and the saddest part of it all is that instead of fixing the problems, they have created a whole new bunch of them :o//
I just want you all to know here that I was not meaning to pick on the yanks. We've all got our differences. I've been reading these threads for some time now and I think that you regulars seem like a pretty good bunch of guys. ...... It's a shame that Discovery channel had to pick those 2 drongos to do that show on RW marriages. .........
I agree with you Man. Though I'll admit I didn't see the show and wished I had, by them using two idiots as an example does nothing but reinforce peoples negative attitudes about the RW marriage concept. I'm sure there are a few people here like those two men but overall I don't see it!
