Thanks for the information. And I apologize, dialect was the wrong word to use. I was trying to imply that the languages are similar but there are some significant differences and it can get you in trouble. I've been corrected a couple of times by the lady I talking with. I've also learned that the people of the Ukraine have a lot of pride in their heritage and that is great. I just don't want to get off the plane and tell her she looks like a beautiful horse. And is there a good Ukraine/English dictionary?
Thanks for all your help, I might have to use you as a life saver in the sea of language.
Try this:
In IE click View, Encoding and check Cryillic (Windows).
Also, goin to your control Panel, and in the Add/Remove Programs file, go to the Windows Setup and check Multi-Language Support, details and check Cyrillic language and then check apply. This will set up Windows to accept Cyrillic language. A En./Ru. Language sdelection will show up in your toolbar. Select Russian when downloading her Emails along with the Encoding.
Should help fix your problem.
nasfan6 you're very welcome, it's a pleasure for me to help you:)
A good English, Ukrainian dictionary...no I have never seen such thing, there are translators, but I didn't see the dictionary actually. if you will have any problems with the language, you're welcome to turn to me:)
I made my first attempt today to write my lady in her language. Ptichka and anyone else here who is fluent in Russian will probably enjoy this. I wrote my thoughts down in english first and then used my language course and Russian dictionary to translate the letter. So Im feeling pretty confident in what I have done, until I get this brainstorm to run it through an online translator after, and I quote after Ive already sent the letter.OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!! I have come to
two conclusions. One she may never speak to me again, which I doubt that will happen. Two, since I know she has a wonderful sense of humor she has probably fallen of her chair laughing so hard she has tears in her eyes. I wrote her back immediately telling her if she hurt herself in the fall please send me the doctor bill I will gladly pay for it. One thing since Ive become a member here I have met some
great people and the adventure into another language and culture has be interesting to say the least. If anyone is interested I will gladly post in this thread, my English letter, my transcription into
Russian and the copy of the translated letter from an online translator. You all have a great day, I have to hit the books and work harder on my Russian, especially in my writing of the language.
Mike I think that your attempt to write Russian is a very good thing, and that you tried very hard on that!!! I'm proud of you:) Really I'm, because many people told me before that Russian is too hard to learn, as it's different from English a lot.
If the letter is not too personal then please post it here, as an example of what a man can do with wish to learn!!! And also you will show what the on-line translator is:)
I will say this, It's a two way street. I have seen a similar situation in some women that have written to me where the wording does not mean what was intended, either. Patience and understanding is key, here.
I don't think the language is too hard. It's just getting used to the alphabet is my only problem and some translation is different. Using the work "like"in english translates to love in Russian. Once you learn the alphabet the phonics in Russian is similar to english with the exceptions on how you accentuate the syllabals. No the letter isn't too personal it was my first attempt to write in Russian, I told her she could laugh and not feel bad about it since I have an excellent sense of humor. My biggest problem was navigating the keyboard in Russian. I haven't got a response from her yet, she problably had to be rushed to the hospital for abdominal injuries for laughing to hard. In respect to her privacy, I have omitted her name.
Trad, just for you I will submit it!!! Enjoy all. Just remember the first part of the text is my writing in english, second part is in Russian, third is what the online translator did to me!LMFAO!!!!!!!!!

Sincerely Nasfan the идиот (idiot)
I hope you all enjoyed it. It took me over an hour to write it in Russian. After 2 months of correspondence I did not intentionally say I love her very much. Damn, they're some uncharted waters here.
Glad you got a laugh, I did also, after I got over the concussion of
my head hitting the desk. Well at least for now I can speak the language better than I can write it. Hell thats not saying much though. Welcome to the moron school of language arts. I tried writing a simple letter not too complicated so the translation to Russian wouldnt be that difficult.OOOOOoooooooooooopppssssssss!!!!!!!! I should have stuck with baseball where failing 7 out of 10 times pays you millions of dollars. I dont see being a translator in my near future.
I had flowers waiting for my girl at the apartment, I wrote in the card " the flowers are beautiful, but not as beautiful as you" I looked nervously as she read the card...got a big smile and the translation had been successful..phew :-))))
Mike you got very good in Russian!! Grammar is something that you will learn later and it's not that difficult in simple sentences. But the way in the sentence "I will gladly help you with english if you like.", "like" should be translated as "want"
I will make a note of that, thanks. I know my syntax isn't proper and I really appreciate your input!!! This is something I will learn as I progress. That's why I first put it down in simple english, I thought it would make the translation into Russian easier. Either that or you can't trust online translators too much. My goal right now is to be able to have a converstion in Russian. By writing helps me study the words, and pronunciation of the words as I write and construct sentences. I will continue to correspond with her in Russian. She has sent me a reply this morning I'm curious what her response is.
Trad that's funny. Moments of sweat!!! I'm looking forward to our phone conversation next week. That should prove to be real interesting. And no Trad I won't record it for publication!LMAO!!
