Sorry trad - It's been a while since I was on this board so my memory isn't always so good regarding each persons situation. (Better not be Altheimers yet). Could you refresh me memory and tell me where you met (which FSU countries) the othr three girls? If memory is serving me correctly - and I have no reason at this point to feel that it is - it was St. Petersburg???
I met one who was visiting a friend, in amsterdam, another in Cyprus and the last one in Turkey, I am lucky that I have never had to go through a laborious visa oprocess for either the Ukraine or Russia,. Turkey and Moldova were eas#y
I didn't have much trouble when i went to Ukraine. Wasn't as easy as getting the visa at the airport in Chisinau - but it didn't seem to be a bother. Little more expensive $30 or $40 than Moldova.
I agree, just more forward planning and waiting involved in goung to Russia or the Ukraine, but of course, if that is where someone's girl is, thats where you have to go
I would say to pass the money to her mother in a silent moment.
Gifts: for sure they will politely refuse, that you will bring some gifts to them. But please do it. They will respect this from you and think, that you are a very polite and attentive guy.
Also I can completely agree with jet, to bring electronic gifts unwrapped and declare it as your personal things. In most cases you will avoid having any hazzels or paying taxes.
If you still insists on buying wine in Moldova, I will following mention three wineries, which produce quite good wines:
-Winery Hincesti
-Acorex (just recently changed there name from Cricova Acorex)
-Dionysos-Mereni
Costs per bottle approximately $3,-
With very few exceptions you can forget about wine from other producers. Wines from the 3 wineries are offered in quite all normal supermarkets like Fidesco and Green Hillīs.
"The polite refusal" thing in general, can take you by surprise. First time I encountered it I was in Odessa Ukraine at a disco with my girl and a friend of hers. A woman came to the table selling roses an I did not immediately notice her. The "friend" we were with noticed and, outloud, suggested I buy a rose for my girl. So I turned to her and said "Do you want a rose?" She shook her head and said no. So I waved the rose-lady on.
Polite refusal hit me when I wasn't expecting it.
It suddenly got very chilly in that disco - and it had nothing to do with the air-conditioning. She stopped speaking and decided soon that it was time to go home. It was clear that she was upset. I don't remember exactly what it was that made the answer clear to me but it soon was clear. As the girls put on their coats I dashed back into the disco and found the rose-lady and bought a rose. She smiled so sweetly when I gave it to her. If I was manipulated - I didn't care. The sweet smile was worth it.
In America - you ask the girl - there is NO polite refusal. She either says "Yes Of course I want a rose." (meaning "I want you to buy everything for me.") Or, she will say "No", in which case if you buy one anyway the next thing you will hear is "Now what am I going to do with this thing? Who's going to carry it? It needs water."
There are no polite women in American anymore of any type.
The winery is only (I think) 40 miles north of Chisinau and you can take a tour. Unfortunately, I did not take the tour (wasn't on my girl's agenda - and polite refusal had nothing to do with it). But I understand that these are underground streets and corriders - the longest in the world used for this particular purpose.
Don't forget Moldovan Cognac. Okay - we all know that technically Cognac (like champagne) comes only from France (specifically those named regions). The Moldovan variety is called "Divin" is quite good and a 10 year old bottle of "Kvini" (brand) can be had for 150 lei (about $12.50).
if a woamn says no, she means no
if a woman saays no, she means yes
if a woman says yes, she means yes
if a woman says yes, she means no
You got it?? For sure no - no man on earth will ever understand the women :-)))
Anyway: what happened to you was the same, as musicman was told about bringing gifts. This NO means nothing else than the polite wish, to do it.
Jet, sorry, but you mix two different wineries:
Cricova is quite good in producing good moldovan champagne. The wine is in the best sense average. But indeed it is the winery with the famous cellars.
Cricova-Acorex (now called only Acorex) has nothing to do with Cricova. But their wines are mostly good.
Cognac: you are right. Kvint is located in Tiraspol (Transdnestr) and I like their Cognac also. Try to buy a bottle of "Tiraspol" from Kvint - costs 30-40 EURO, but really outstanding.
Something else: the cognac offered in discos is mostly a horrible quality and often not the same as labeled on the bottle. Also avoid to buy reputated wines in smaller shops, kiosks or bazars: there is a whole industry in Moldova only to rebottle bad wines into bottles with famous and reputated wines/labels.
Wine and cognac are not the only things that you are likely to find in Moldova with fake brand names.
If you want to pick-up something with brand names such as Hugo Boss, Christian Dior, Nike, Addidas - just about any expensive or designer label you can imagine - they are ALL OVER the place. I mean literally - walk down the street and find a stand made of six pieces of wood and no paint - selling at least black embossed Hugo Boss shopping bags.
Can't help but smile. In a country where unemployment is rampant - and those employed may make $80 a month - EVERYBODY wears clothes with designer labels!
OF COURSE ITS ALL FAKE. But how are the licensing companies going to do anything about it? What fiancial incentive do they have?
Even more amazing is the quality of these designer fakes. It is pretty high - right down to the holographic label I found on my Addidas shirt!
Seriously - even at 100 to 150 lei per "designer" shirt (about $8 to $12) the people wear them sometimes every day - they wash them by hand. They can spot a bad seem anywhere on a garment a mile away and they examine them closely before they buy. The stuff isn't junk or cheaply made products by any stretch of the imagination.
as we say in Germany: the clothes make the people :-))
Yes, you can find all fashion labels there. The very most isnīt surprisingly not produced in Moldova, but in Turkey.
Licensing companies? In normal countries government staff will fight against such fakes. In MOldova also. But the reality is, that the police takes some cash from the sellers for it, and thatīs the story.
Anyway: Hugo Boss really let produce textils in Moldova (cutting and sewing). But hardly any of those clothes will be sold in Moldova - a bit too expensive :-)
well, I appreciate that you use german sports wear, adidas :-))
Actually - I am German WorldTravel. I'm fourth generation American - but from a very German area of the US. My father spoke German before he spoke English. We have all the old German traditions. Bratwurst fests every weekend (SOMEWHERE in the area) and polkas. I have no doubt though a modern day German would find the culture surprising.
Gotta say, if they are fake labels in Moldova, the girls look brilliant in them, my girl dresses far better than me, will have to check those labels..lol
Trad - from an economic view point - the garments can't be real. The prices could never cover real licensing fees. But still - as I mentioned earlier - I have seen holographic tags (designed specifically to PREVENT counterfitting) sewn into the garments - which can only mean that a.) the counterfitters are willing to go that far b.) the maunfacturer is dumping excess inventory in FSU countries at a loss or legitimate sources are doing unauthorized production overuns to sell in the FSU. The latter two possibilities seem less likely - since the styles don't actually appaear to be constistant with anything the designer makes that I am aware oof.
WT mentiones that they are made in Turkey and i have no reason to doubt that. But I am still quite curious about the full story. Are they completely fake; right down to the holographic labels?
Tradman - the girls certainly DO look brilliant in them. But then these are Moldovan girls - able to look brilliant in anything (and especially - NOTHING).
My girl bought an "Americna Style" sweat suit "One Size Fits All". I teased her, before we got it home, the "One Size Fits All" was actually code for "Looks Crappy On Everyone". Well I was wrong. When she stepped out wearing that it looked gorgeous - snug in just the right areas if you know what I mean.
Its not the clothes - its those beautiful Russian women.
I LOVE IT when grown, well traveled men conditioned to spend their daily life, sometimes even their HOURLY life looking at ugly fat western women still get amazed at seeing a foreign woman look gorgeous, desirable and elegant on clothes most western women would wear only to imitate a circus tent...;)))
