Yes, there is tremendous damage, but not all is rubble. Many newer construction homes with shutters did quite well. Of course moblie homes are the most vulnerable, but even many of them are still standing and inhabitable. Building materials, design, storm preperation, and quality construction are major factors in how well a building survives. 145 mph sustained winds with gusts over 180 are a challenge. As for FEMA paying to rebuild....They are not giving out money to rebuild...they are making low intrest LOANS. Kind of sad when you think of how many billions we are pissing away in Iraq yet when our own people, and in this case many retired folks on small pensions, need help they have to wait in lines for days to apply for a loan that must be repaid when they have limited savings and income. wessman Member send PM   block PM add to buddies Send: 8/18/2004 10:46:25 PM   the hardet hit were the beaches and as of today they are just getting open and not much survived along the coast. Us 41 is a haul from the beach. Like I stated earlier 160 homes of new constuction destroyed on Captiva Island. ninty percent of all the homes on the island.
