I would like to contribute, if I may, and offer my experience of living here in Ukraine, and 9 trips spread over 2 years prior to living here….. Ukraine is, for the most part, a tolerant nation. There are some black and Asian students at Institutes throughout the country. However, since August I have seen a total of 6 Black people in Rivne, a City of around 250,000. They have all been males aged between 19 and about 25, and I'm certain they have all been students. One night a few weeks ago 2 of these guys were in the main Disco here – "Laguna" to my mind they seemed a little nervous. I observed inappropriate gestures towards these 2 Black guys from a group of Ukrainian lads who were sitting at a table. No trouble occurred, but the Black guys did not stay until the end, and they did not leave with any girls. I have NEVER seen any Black or Asian guys with Ukrainian girls, including when I stayed in Kiev in 2008. I have had countless conversations with both Ukrainian males and females about this topic as it interests me. What I've been told over and over again is that Black, Asian and people of faiths such as Muslim can come here, visit, study etc, but Ukrainian girls, on the whole, do not fancy these men, do not want them as their boyfriends/husbands, would bring shame upon their families if they had a mixed race child and, Ukrainian men would simply not tolerate a mixed raced relationship in their City/Town/Village, to the point of serious risk of health for the Black or Asian guy. I have also been told that as children, Ukrainians in school have been taught that British come from Britain, Americans come from America, Germans come from Germany etc etc, and Ni****s come from Africa. In-fact, I have heard the N word used so much in Ukraine to describe Black people that I'm surprised I haven't forgotten myself and started using it myself, which of course I never would. When I explained to one friend that this word is banned for use by White people throughout the Western world he simply said – "crazy Western people" I have yet to see a Muslim in Ukraine, or at least, not yet in full "costume" Before my first ever visit to Ukraine in 2007, I checked the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office Website for advice, it stated, and still does…… "Although the great majority of visitors experience no difficulties, there have been murders, muggings and other violent attacks on foreign nationals both in central Kyiv and other major regional centres in recent years. In some cases these have been racially motivated. Travellers of Asian or Afro-Caribbean descent and individuals belonging to religious minorities should take extra care" "Homosexuality is legal in Ukraine. There is a reasonably tolerant attitude towards homosexuality, although much less so than in the United Kingdom. You should be careful about open displays of affection in public" Just MY experiences, others may differ. Regards. But I did here it used in Russia one day. Yep, I was at the airport waiting to board for my flight home. You could here these guys n....r this, nig..er that. And blatantly calling blacks the 'N' word. However it was in English. And these guys weren't Russian. Seems they were NBA wannabes playing hoops for a Russian team. Oh, yes, they were black. When I asked the one 'fellow' where he was from, they discovered an English speaking American was in their midst. The 'N' word got quieter for a few minutes. Then one who wasn't there for the whole intoduction shows up. First words out of his mouth was nigger! And it all started up again. I guess what's good for the goose ain't good for the nigger. The most racist, bigoted and hateful people I have ever met are American Niggers. Not to be confused with the average black man. You say about the N word…."I haven't heard it used for quite a long time" You mean in the USA ? If so, then that's no real surprise is it ? (Unless you live in KKK territory) it's banned for use by White people pretty much throughout the Western Hemisphere. I also haven't heard it used in the UK from a Caucasian since maybe when I was at school or something, and that would've been from some kid who didn't actually realise what he was saying. It was heard a million times in my house however up until I left good ole Blight in August, but that was off the TV – MTV Hip Hop & Rap videos and Chris Rock TV specials, all of which I love. If you mean you have not heard the N word in quite a long time in the FSU, then that is REALLY interesting, and I would like to know where in the FSU you have visited. Here in Rivne it's common for Ukrainians of all ages and both sexes to refer to Black people as Ni****s, I don't even think they mean it in a derogatory way, if that makes sense ? As for me, I'll not use it, I know the connotations of the word, so it would be uncomfortable for me to hear it tumbling out of my mouth every time I spoke (in praise) of Barack Obama, for example. Homosexuality and Lesbianism are another couple of topics I find interesting to speak with Ukrainians about. Just about everyone here is against these things, even though they concede that sexuality isn't chosen, it's genetic, and therefore can't be "helped" or "changed" I threw a party here at my flat on New Years Eve, and before the music and dancing really got going, we all sat around in little groups, eating tasty food, sipping Vodka (I drink it only choot choot) and talking. Elton John came up, for some reason, I mentioned his marriage to his partner David Furnish, the ceremony, exchanging of vows and rings etc, the faces on almost all of the people at the party told me more than they could ever have spoken, some nearly choked on their cocktail, others ran around the flat, desperate to find someone to recite the "disgusting" details to of Elton John's marriage. This is a very interesting country I know that much, full of surprises and never dull. Even when you think you've sampled all that Ukraine has to offer you, something fresh occurs that either makes you smile, makes you stop and think, or has you recoiling in horror. We passed a wall (on the grounds of a university, if I recall) that had spray-painted (in English!) "Death to Jews". When I pointed it out to my friend -- he hadn't noticed it -- he seemed bewildered, as if wondering, "how did that get there?" kakaya strana! I just found it interesting how these americans were acting and their blatant disregard for others. even if it is an accepted greeting between blacks it is uncomfortable to be in the presence of it. just like gay men, they call each other fags all the time -- but don't you dare say it to them. it is a strange world... I had gotten one hint from him - he complained about Jews from Russia who live in America. He thought it terribly dishonest of them to call themselves Russians, when they are not Russians at all, they are Jews! This disturbed me, but I thought, "well, this is a cultural difference in the concept of nationality." My first ever FSU visit, was to see him and his wife, after he lost his USA job and they had to return home. When I saw him there, he said that he had been very confused for many weeks ... but now he understood everything, because he had read a book that explained it all! A very enlightening book, printed in Russian, but written by American David Duke! (Yes, that David Duke, Grand Wizard or whatever the fuck the KKK terrorists call their bigot-in-chief.) This book explained the dark, dishonest, and sinister nature of Jews, and how most of the evils that had befallen the Russian and Ukrainian people in the 20th century were caused by Jews. No doubt sooty/dcv keeps some of Duke's writings in the smallest room of the house. You probably can imagine, that I was shocked to see the state my friend had gotten into. After seeing him the next year, by which time he had discovered that the Secret Protocols of the Elders of Zion prove the Jewish conspiracy (sadly, not joking here), I rather steered clear of him. We had our last communication in the summer of 07. I think of him often, and wish him well. He seems a sad and lost character - though perhaps no more sad and lost than I. I have heard since I lost contact with him, that he had lost a job (he has had big trouble keeping jobs) after he got angry with his boss, and told her that he had decided she must be a Jew. My $.02 on the N-word: a term I hear when people who despise blacks want to disparage them is "nigger" ... the term I hear people use in a convivial/joking way among friends is "nigga" (no R sound). I don't think these are the same word: that is, I think if someone tried to substitute the first word in a context where the second is accepted, the hearers would be startled and confused. As I understand it, although they sound similar, and one is obviously derived from the other, they carry different meanings. It's not a very good analogy, but young folks in America say "the shit" to mean that something is very special or excellent. So to say that, for example, the new google smartphone is the shit, conveys exactly the opposite message of saying that the phone is shit. And you know, I always knew there was a variation in the N word, because I'd seen in movies and heard in music, but, until now, I never knew why the variation was created i.e. ga and ger on the ending. You explain it well, and I have learnt something this morning (Ukraine time) Who would have thought it eh, this Forum getting back to its original concept, and someone has learnt something interesting from a fellow poster ? Of course in the UK we use and even more interesting term to describe how much we like something….."The Dogs Bollocks" but shush, if the UK's PC Police get a hold of it, they're likely to order it changed to "The Puppies Fluffy Scrotum" or something, mustn't offend those British dogs ! The new word of the day is "accessible." wheel chair accessible, handy capped parking etc. etc. is no longer. It was quite noticeable as I was researching the National Parks and State Prks websites. My observation that there are two different words with distinct meanings is linguistic, not political. I offered no value judgment. As a matter of personal taste, I don't like to use this kind of language. Some questions you might enjoy pondering: 1. Do you know anyone who accepts certain people calling him by a certain name or title, who doesn't like it when other people call him the same thing? 2. Do you know anyone who DOESN'T fit into the preceding category? 3. Have you ever heard of people ironically turning around a derogatory term, that others have used against them? (Hint 1: In the late 18th century, were "yankee" and "yankee doodle" usually meant as compliments? Hint 2: Do the words to the song "yankee doodle" paint an admirable or heroic picture?)
