That excerpt Tim lifted from your comment – come on now, surely you don’t believe that yourself now do you? Read it again – it OOZES arrogance! Not when coming from someone living in Lichtenstein, but when uttered by someone living in any first-world country it absolutely does.
But I’m afraid that you indeed mean it, because you also want your country to leave the UN, a statement somewhat in-line with the above. Only Adam lived alone in this world and could afford to ignore his neighbours, but modern-day man has learned that this is hardly wise to do. We all live on this world, we all share it, and one’s responsibilities don’t stop at a border at all. Look at unified Europe – predicted to fail by many, but proving to work, no, better, to expand even, and backed by a currency as strong as a horse. Britain, never really having been part of Europe (no offence), lost out on their chance to grow as strong ‘with the rest’. Ever-traditional and resisting change it was hardly a surprise in fact, but I personally would not really be surprised if they would join after all. Nobody can persist in believing they live on an island, even when that island is called a continent.
Your remark about foreign aid I have to address, can’t resist. What follows is valid for any country’s foreign aid, but especially so for the US’s. Yes, taxpayers pay it, and the governments abuse it, and the more powerful the donor the larger the abuse-scale is. Buying sympathy with sending food, and with it manipulating pricing and markets there where it comes from, building infrastructure which MUST be done by appointed contractors from named countries so these will be indebted to the donor, sometimes combined with mandatory products to be used coming from the donor-country hence benefiting a group or individual which then owes, or is paid for services rendered, all this you call ‘aid’? Wrong name, try political weapon for which taxpayers gladly pay, money for nothing to be abused on demand, and simultaneously a soother for the consciences of the taxpayers at home. It only looks morally justifiable, but don’t look to deep for there will be proof that nothing’s for free in this world.
Military aid? Only the UN asks, when the majority thinks it’s required, but please let no-one venture on his own please. Such has proven disastrous and costly quite a few times already, and bear in mind I’m not talking only money here.
Oil, the driver of our world. First of all I think you grossly underestimate what the level of technology in this respect is in the FSU, on a par of that in Canada if you didn’t know, but this aside. Opening known fields in your own backyard, or those Russian one’s for that matter, you think would ruin OPEC. I would agree probably, but you fail to see the reasons why they don’t do it then. Think a bit further – everybody knows these resources are drying up, and when they do the money-flow stagnates. And as a coincidence then those fields will be opened, not only partly reversing the money flow but with it a dependency will be created – and used, make no mistake, to the fullest of effects. Those countries now reaping billions have no other means of income, but also are concentrated there where political problems are either abundant or originate, and negotiations thus far has proved futile. Take that oil away by buying it, dump a surplus of money in there, money which in any case is spent elsewhere, and when all that stops.. a complex combinations of consequences and actions will take place, they outcome of which is yet uncertain but one thing is guaranteed: from major players they will revert to minors, probably to be pushed there where the powers to be want them to be, with most of the problems solved then.
In fact buying oil now is smart, and the currently opened alternate resources help control the flow of money not getting excessive. Just wait when the desert dries up.
Especially a sovereign country listens to the rest of the world, and negotiates with them and thinks ahead, if only to remain sovereign. It’s just a pity that some of its citizens do not agree with that.
The world rankings in oil resevers as of 2003 in billions of barrels.
1. Saudi Arabia 261.6
2. Iraq 115.0
3. Iran 100.1
4. Kuwait 98.9
5. United Arab Emirates 63.0
6. Russia 58.8
7. Venezuela 53.1
8. Nigeria 32.0
9. Libya 30.0
10. China 23.7
What happens when China can not get oil to keep pace with its rate of exspansion. They are all ready in the Sudan. Fortunatley we have enough oil to last a hundred years and by then they will have learned to fuse hydrocarbons and h2o and evey one will own a flying hybrid.
Tim H you can have a go at me any time friend. Like I said in an Earlier post, I am no fan of George Bush, father or son.
Thunder if what I define as common sense is arrogance to you, then yes I'm one arrogant son of a bitch. I will refute your post in a political thread I started a bit back. It's not arrogance my friend at all. I've never been an arrogant person. I just look back at history, and I will not profess to be an expert on Europeon affairs, I look through the perspective of my forefathers writings and teachings.
As far as the UN asking for military aid, I almost forgot how much aid they asked for or supplied to the slaughter of thousands of Riwandans.
Take a stand, stand up! Stand down! Stand off! but take a stand either a hand stand a grand stand or a band stand. For me I'll be at the cab stand looking for a ride out of here. But before I go Let me say that America should look at history, the mideast has been at war for thousands of years and we will not change that we are just a boil on an already festering wound. How can we fix the problems in the world when we can't stand on our own hind legs!
Well, a good part of those wars have been perpetuated by outside influences. The Crusades, the Inquisition, etc.
The U.S.A. has been involved in Moslem areas for nearly 200 years, starting with the Ivory Coast.
Now, include major wars like WWI and WWII, and you can see the constant "meddling" the western world has had with the middle east. (that includes Europe and the Americas)
Of course, the Soviet era has had it's influences here as well (aka, Afghanistan, Egypt, Iraq, etc.)
To know where you are going, it is important to know where you have been.
I suppose it depends on what you view as "doing a u-turn". "gunboat diplomacy" is ultimately a tool of empire.
The issue of pre-emptive measures is a hard issue to grasp. Again, the initiation of force should not be a tool we rely on. Has Iraq initiated force on us? I find that question hard to answer.
You seem to be blind to the shrinking world and the impossibility for a nation like the US to keep to itself. Like it or not we are all dependant on each other. And don't you think for a second that all the "help" the US gives out is purely of the goodness of our hearts. It's always self interest. The US does not do anything if there isn't something in it for them. If it were not true then why aren't we helping other nations dealing with their dictators playing the hero? Simple those nations have nothing for us so we leave them to their own devices. I'm an American and love this country but you can't just ignore our manipulation. I am not of the impression the US is alone in this. But I can understand some of the resentment other nations have for us. I don't feel it really matters who is in the whitehouse. It will still be business as usual. When I see people complaining about this president or that president I have to laugh. Well at least that's my opinion.... :-)

Are you not from Australia? The country where princess Mary comes from?
There is an election there soon as well, is there not?
And Australia is beautiful too.
Did you guys know that
85% of the troops involved the Balkans were American? I would like to see the US close all of her US bases and bring all of the troops home. Enough is enough. And from Korea and Japan. Let the rest of the First World defend themselves. And last but not least the Middle East. We have enough problems in this Hemisphere. And yes the UN should go.
Do you need to insult me to engage me? Again if it does not interest you it is invalid, are you the forum police. I thought you were just complaining about blowhards. It is about control freaks too would'nt you agree?
quiet charm,
i made that conclusion a while back.it is a closed shop. there is a closed circle of about three or four major blowhards who think this forum is about and for them and them only. if you dont dance to their tune , you are out of the loop. i just hope they put the same effort in trying to find a women as much as they try to run the show here. they should hold nominations and vote each other into office. for most purposes they should e-mail each other on their own private adresses to continue to enlighten eachother. i am not impressed.

As a military service memember I get to see and here a lot more than the average man sitting at home watching CNN. I am Republican of course and if you know a little history that being under a Democratic President during a time of war is a huge mistake, even Clinton understood that fact and is why he didnt take the steps that President Bush made, Clinton for all his cheating and affairs was a great President and a good Democrate, granted my pay sucked under him. All of you guys made good points. America is seen badly in the eyes of the world. If Europe or anybody eles saw all we do for the world and all the wealth and power we have being spent on support others there views would change, but like us all we want to hear are the bad and not the good. Bush does what is right regardless of what you are I or the rest of the world thinks is the right thing to do. If you saw a man with a gun in his hand, coming towards you but you wasnt sure if he was going to attack or just walk by, what would you do? What til you have a bullet in your gut or would you take action before the danger has a chance to take form? Bush perfers taking action before it can harm America even if there was no danger and only a possiblility. Kerry would rather have something happen before taking action like a good Democrate would. About the Middle East though, ..:-) they might be hurting really bad in the future. With Russia open up Oil Refineries at such a rapid pase I have heard talks that it will be cheaper for Europe and for the U.S. to get are Oil from Russia, making Russia a fat, wealthy nation. The Russian people have the same kind of will and deterination as Americans, to be the best. All they lack is the resources. When the day comes hopefully we will be allies and not enemies again. Well this is a partial way that us military folk feel. Good day.
