If I'm not mistaken Tony Llamas as actually cowboy-boots. And if you look atthe general style of the shoes worn in Ukraine - especially the women's (okay - not countig the silleto heel) you can definitely see a style influenced by cowboy-boot.
I have also seen extemely high-end Italian shoes - men's and women's, that seem to have something of a pointy toe.
Some say that they shoes worn in FSU countries (including that familiar stilleto heel on women's shoes) is inspired by those.
Either way....this is more time and space then I ever thought I would EVER use to decribe SHOES.
WHO told you my mum dresses me funny eh? Got some PI on my case or what? Hope he'll be armed hence able to defend himself so I'll go scotfree in court.
Just kidding Jet. Is it just me or is Toad showing signs of some nervousness? Time will tell as it tictocs away, like a time-set device. One wonders if he's hoping for some explosions... ;-)
Yeah...that's me!
Call me 'Nervous Toad' from now on, lol...
95% of the preparations are taken care of already, although I may have to choose another apartment for the two days we'll spend in E-burg.
CityRealtyRussia has been VERY flaky in confirming my reservations. I would not recommend them to anyone.
You've given them the dates and have told them you want the accomodation?
Good - that's settled then, and trust on it being available. If you've got doubts ask her to phone them, not a bad idea by any means, but I'll tell you now that 'flaky' is a damn good sign already - you're dealing with very professional people by the sounds of it!
Sarcasm? Yeay & Nay, it's the Russian way. If she says it's OK trust me to trust her to trust them to trust yourself. I bet you haven't made a deposit or were asked for it, and also even she could not get a straight 'yes' out of them, right? Go, it'll be there. Oh, an apartment is cash Toad, notes, a local wad, so DO exchange wherever you deem suitable. I'd NOT pay the full loot but some days only, for flexibility reasons as well as having to place less trust on the landlord you don't know. But you always pay in advance, only then you're sure you've got a roof, bed, bath and ...
The tiny (maybe six rooms) hotel that I stay at in Moldova USED to have an internet connection. They don't anymore - not even an email address (when you use the old one you get a constant "over quota" message) and no one there speaks English.
They did have a telephone number though and I asked my fiance to call and make a reservation. She did and she told me that everything would be okay - that the owner had said probably we could have the room we wanted.
That drove me crazy - she doesn't have a lot of money so I knew no deposit would be put down. I asked if I should use snail mail to send a check (at the time we had a month to go) she said "No don't worry about it." I told her that I felt uncofortable just having a second-hand word with no deposit.
She told me that she would call like a couple of days I was to arrive and everything would be okay. That REALLY drove me nuts.
She said "That's the way we do business here. You know about business in america but I know about it here."
So with blind faith I flew into Chisinau HOPING that the driver from the hotel would be there holding a sign to let me know I was to go with him.
Of course all worked out as she said it would. No question.
TD,
Lena called them and they would not give her any information claiming I would be getting everything in the mail.
Snail Mail??? WTF???
They treated Lena like crap even though she is listed as the other guest to the apartment.
I faxed my reservation form and got an email saying their system cannot process my credit card. My CC company hasn't even heard of them, let alone seen an attempt on their part to charge it.
The apartment in question is still available through several other sites. I recognized it from the photos, but I have no idea where it is located exactly.
I tried to call twice, but nobody answers the phone.
I'll make one last attempt to e-mail them, but if I don't get a response sometime Monday Fuck them!...I'm sure some other outfit will be more than happy to take my money and say at least 'thank you for doing business with us' and be willing to at least let me know exactly where damn apartment is located, lol..
If Lena had said 'it's Ok' I'd fly with it....but she couldn't even get them to acknowledge her.
I would agree - that your situation is worse. I'd look to one of the other companies.
And I agree with you Thunder - toad is showing his human side. But I thought that was supposed to happen AFTER the princess kissed him. They haven't even MET yet!
By the way - whilewe were staying at the hotel - my fiance complained to me that they showed me more respect than they did to her. Which is kind of funny since they did not speak a word of English and I did not speak a word of Russian. Though we were always together - the hotelkeeper would, in Russian, ask "What does HE want for breakfast." Never "What do YOU want for breakfast."
Simple, jet...
The hotel keeper knew whose pockets would paid for the breakfast...Always kiss up to the 'paying' customer...:)
Good business practice, I say.
Kiss a customer?
Nah, I'll kiss & bite simultaneously - they'll be back for more, promise ;-)
Toad, don't make the mistake (like I did) of phoning before 10 (ten!!) in the morning. They'll not be there or ignore the phone, trust me.
If Lena says it's not OK - I told you to trust her :))
Both of you Gents,
Surely you know (Jet should) that men there treat women like shit? This is blatant, and highly annoying also. She asks the way (coz I cannot) and he treats her like dirt, obvious to even a blind mole. Once I actually wanted to climb in but was elegantly stopped, she told me it was 'normal'.
Not!
So your woman was irked because she was jealous. And THAT explains why you did not write you yourself took any offence.... ;-))
Izi, better learn to count to ten. Know that I don't understand Russian but have to judge from intonation and bodylanguage, but one of the most striking things there is that men do treat women (mind, strangers) with disrespect. Somehow they seem to get away with acting superior, on occasion even downright rude, and I find this 'cultural' thing striking.
The reverse is true also, women are invariably polite and kind, and I'm talking about strangers here also. Walk up to someone and address her, your foreign language of course coming as a bit of a surprise. Some will become shyish because of this, especially when in company, but without fail they are friendly and will try to help.
Naturally those with a good command of the lang used (I try two) will be more responsive than those unable to converse, but making conversation is surprisingly easy. When you add the average beauty of the women there this comes as a breath of fresh air, and I suppose this also could be called a 'cultural' thing.
If men treat women bluntly and women accept this, imagine when a stranger addresses a woman in a normal or nice way - such must be a pleasant surprise, a good start if anything. Add some humour and off you go, and now compare this to your local scene, don't care where you live.
This difference especially one should be aware of, and it should be treated with care. She is not overdosing on oestrogene when she acts, for you surprisingly, nice, she just is curious, surprised and nice combined. I am convinced this kind of misunderstanding is what some guys cannot judge correctly and consequently adore and fall in love with, a potential crucial mistake if you ask me. Or ask Loopy...
Well modesty keeps me from admitting just what a handsome guy I am.
But honesty keeps me from denying it.
(And if you believe the load of crap I just wrote I do have a bridge to sell you - in fact several.)
Serious however - I did get an undue amount of attention each time I traveled to the FSU - as any of you guys will just because they will know that you are from somewhere else.
But eh roles will soon turn the exact opposit way as I - a fairly regular American guy of 47 - bring back my gorgeous 25 year old bride. Things will certinly be different here.
Thunder - If I could converse in Russian - what a difference it would make, as you suggest.
Guys - I know its hard (I have not been able to accomplish it) but if you have better langage mastery skills than I have and can manage to pick up a bit of Russian before you go - it would be a good thing.
I tried the learning Russian thing and I am a complete duffer. I have enough problems with my Spanish that I need on a daily basis and the smattering of French I have. I do have a tendency to acclimatize to language quite quickly when I am surrounded by it. I will get Marina to give me one or two lessons and perhaps with the Russian language as well.
what I meant was I try 2 langs, English and German. I'm fluent in another two but cannot expect anybody to know them in Russia. French would be a worthwhile try also, but mine is really insufficient, too long ago.
The little bit of Russian I've learnt from some dud cd's I've bought is hardly worth mentioning, and neither does it prove usable other than recognizing bits here and there. Pronunciation is no problem for me though, I'm already used to what your some of you guys are strange sounds.
What bothers me is the unfamiliar logic of this language, it hardly resembles any of the latin one's. Have you tried counting? Gawdalmighty, makes no sense .. :))
